The Coastal Ocean Circulation Influence On The 2018 West Florida Shelf K. Brevis Red Tide Bloom, Robert H. Weisberg, Yonggang Liu, Chad Lembke, Chuanmin Hu, Katherine Hubbard, Matthew Garrett Apr 2019

The Coastal Ocean Circulation Influence On The 2018 West Florida Shelf K. Brevis Red Tide Bloom, Robert H. Weisberg, Yonggang Liu, Chad Lembke, Chuanmin Hu, Katherine Hubbard, Matthew Garrett

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Blooms of the harmful alga, Karenia brevis on the west Florida continental shelf are thought to initiate offshore before manifesting as a nuisance along the coastline. Contributing to such blooms are a complex sequence of events occurring within oligotrophic waters, which in any given year may or may not be facilitated by the ocean circulation. Once initiation occurs, the delivery from the region of offshore origination to the region of coastline manifestation requires an upwelling circulation, whereby K. brevis cells are advected shoreward along the bottom. The 2018 K. brevis bloom was particularly intense owing to cells from the …

Science And Privacy: Data Protection Laws And Their Impact On Research, Mike Hintze Apr 2019

Science And Privacy: Data Protection Laws And Their Impact On Research, Mike Hintze

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

While privacy laws differ in their scope, focus, and approach, they all involve restrictions on the collection, use, sharing, or retention of information about people. In general, privacy laws reflect a societal consensus that privacy violations can lead to a wide range of financial, reputational, dignitary, and other harms, and that excessive collection and harmful uses of personal information should therefore be constrained. These laws require organizations to comply with a number of obligations concerning personal information. In practice, these requirements can lead organizations to refrain from collecting certain data, only use data with the consent of the individual, or …

Who Can Excel In Mathematics?, Marla A. Sole Apr 2019

Who Can Excel In Mathematics?, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

Students may erroneously believe that mathematics ability is largely innate and fixed (Kimball and Smith 2013). The evidence seems to support these mistaken beliefs. Women and minorities score lower on the mathematics section of the SAT (College Board 2017). When assessing students’ mathematics college readiness, a larger percentage of women, African Americans, and Hispanics fell below the benchmark (ACT 2017); and, in general, in science, engineering, math, and technology (STEM) fields, the gender and racial gaps in interest, performance, and degrees awarded have not closed (Neuhauser 2015). Persistent performance gaps can serve to reinforce students’ mistaken belief that women and …

Art Student Perspectives Of Activist Art: A Phenomenological Study, Charity-Mika Woodard Apr 2019

Art Student Perspectives Of Activist Art: A Phenomenological Study, Charity-Mika Woodard

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experience of seven undergraduate art students who created an original piece of Activist Art through a class assignment.

The researcher sought to hear participants’ stories and examine the artwork created to give meaning to their experience. The overwhelming response showed that undergraduate students wanted to tell their stories and looked inward to find personally powerful and relevant causes that they wanted to share with their classmates, and, in creating a lasting piece of artwork, with the world. The implications of this work suggest that art programs set up in …

The Influence Of A School-Based Health Center On Students And Teachers' Classroom Experiences: Stories Teachers Tell, Joseph D. Bridgeman

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This narrative qualitative study endeavored to learn from teachers’ stories regarding the significance of a school-based health center. This study took place at North High School (pseudonym), an urban high school within a large metropolitan school district in the Pacific Northwest. The study used a three-interview series to elicit stories about the school-based health center and students’ experiences with it. Several themes were evident across teachers’ stories: 1) the school-based health center made a notable difference in the typical markers of academic success, 2) students who previously did not have an adult they trusted changed significantly when they got established …

The Aid Gap, Chris Gunthrie, Emily Lamm Apr 2019

The Aid Gap, Chris Gunthrie, Emily Lamm

Law School Admissions

Gender gaps in wages and wealth are well-known, but another gender gap has escaped attention. This gap – which we call the “aid gap” – arises from the widespread practice of merit scholarship negotiation and directly affects law students and lawyers. In this Essay, we identify and explain the aid gap; describe its causes and consequences; and advocate for regulatory intervention to eliminate, or at least minimize, it.

The Power Side Of The Second Amendment Question: Limited, Enumerated Powers And The Continuing Battle Over The Legitimacy Of The Individual Right To Arms, Nicholas J. Johnson Apr 2019

The Power Side Of The Second Amendment Question: Limited, Enumerated Powers And The Continuing Battle Over The Legitimacy Of The Individual Right To Arms, Nicholas J. Johnson

UC Law Journal

Roughly a decade has passed since the Supreme Court’s decision in District of Columbia v. Heller and the battle over the basic legitimacy of the right to keep and bear arms continues. A significant segment of the academy, the Bar, and the judiciary remains skeptical about the constitutional bona fides of the individual right to arms. A primary source of that skepticism is the view pressed most forcefully by professional historians that the Second Amendment had nothing to do with individual self-defense and at best protects an “individual militia right” that has no practical application in modern America. This Article …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Blended learning (BL) is an e-learning approach that combines the strengths of both online and face-to-face learning, creating meaningful interactions between students, teachers, and resources. This paper explores students’ expectations and satisfaction with, and participation in, a basic science course offered through BL approaches in an undergraduate medical education programme in Pakistan. Developmental anatomy (embryology) was redesigned as a BL course and offered to a hundred first-year students. Both online activities and technology-assisted face-to-face interactive discussions were used in each topic. Students’ expectations were gathered at the start of the course and perceptions regarding their satisfaction with the course was …

The Employment Relationship: Key Elements, Alternative Frames Of Reference, And Implications For Hrm, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave Apr 2019

The Employment Relationship: Key Elements, Alternative Frames Of Reference, And Implications For Hrm, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The employment relationship is the connection between employees and employers through which people sell their labor. This might consist of an immigrant day laborer paid by the bushel to pick fruit in the hot sun, a tech industry freelancer completing episodic gigs without ever meeting a boss, a salaried manager who has been working in an air-conditioned office for the same company for 40 years, or innumerable other situations. Irrespective of situation, all employees and employers have fundamental interests they pursue through the employment relationship, all forms of this relationship are mediated by labor markets and states, and each instance …

Recruitment And Selection, Filip Lievens, Derek Chapman Apr 2019

Recruitment And Selection, Filip Lievens, Derek Chapman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Few people question that recruitment and selection are key strategic domains in HRM. At the same time, recruitment and selection also have an image problem. First, recruitment and selection are often viewed as ‘old’ ingrained HRM domains. It seems like the traditional recruitment and selection procedures have been around for decades, which is at odds with the ever changing internal and external environment of organizations. Hence, practitioners often wonder whether there are any new research-based ways for recruiting and selecting personnel. Another image problem for recruitment and selection is that a false dichotomy is often created between so-called macro HR …

Elevating Communities Into Self-Sufficiency Through Federally-Funded Health Partnerships, Nalleli Martinez Apr 2019

Elevating Communities Into Self-Sufficiency Through Federally-Funded Health Partnerships, Nalleli Martinez

The study also investigated the role of social determinants of health in relation to achieving self-sufficiency.

Method: A series of 45-minute to 1-hour-long interviews were conducted to explore the perspectives of seven total staff at seven federally-funded HCHPs across the U.S. western region. Using Nvivo, a qualitative data analysis software, responses were categorized into six themes: patient-centered care, one-stop-shop/integrated care model, community partnerships, organizational and staff support, leadership …

Common Threshold In Quantile Regressions With An Application To Pricing For Reputation, Liangjun Su, Pai Xu Apr 2019

Common Threshold In Quantile Regressions With An Application To Pricing For Reputation, Liangjun Su, Pai Xu

Research Collection School Of Economics

The paper develops a systematic estimation and inference procedure for quantile regression models where there may exist a common threshold effect across different quantile indices. We first propose a sup-Wald test for the existence of a threshold effect, and then study the asymptotic properties of the estimators in a threshold quantile regression model under the shrinking-threshold-effect framework. We consider several tests for the presence of a common threshold value across different quantile indices and obtain their limiting distributions. We apply our methodology to study the pricing strategy for reputation via the use of a dataset from Taobao.com. In our economic …

All Faculty Scholarship

Marine sponges harbour diverse communities of microbes. Mechanisms used to establish microbial symbioses in sponges are poorly understood, and the relative contributions of horizontal and vertical transmission are unknown for most species. We examined microbial communities in adults and larvae of carotenoid-rich Clathria prolifera and Halichondria bowerbanki from the mid-Atlantic region of the eastern United States. We sequenced microbiomes from larvae and their mothers and seawater (16S rRNA gene sequencing), and compared microbial community characteristics between species and ambient seawater. The microbial communities in sponges were significantly different than those found in seawater, and each species harboured a distinctive microbiome. …

Ethical Issues In Early Diagnosis And Prevention Of Alzheimer Disease, Peter J. Whitehouse Apr 2019

Ethical Issues In Early Diagnosis And Prevention Of Alzheimer Disease, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

This paper considers ethical issues related to early diagnosis and all forms of prevention of Alzheimer disease and related conditions. It offers a critical view of the current state of scientific, clinical, and social responses to the growing number of older people with cognitive challenges, and suggests how priorities going forward should be different from those receiving most attention today. We begin with a review of global policy efforts, consider the fundamental goals of prevention, examine issues surrounding early diagnosis, explore more deeply values associated with efforts to prevent age associated cognitive decline, and conclude by considering often unexplored ethical …
