Nothing About Us Without Us: The Benefits Of Hiring Staff With A Disability In Libraries., Elaine Chapman, Sarah-Anne Kennedy Apr 2019

Nothing About Us Without Us: The Benefits Of Hiring Staff With A Disability In Libraries., Elaine Chapman, Sarah-Anne Kennedy

Conference Papers

There is a common saying amongst the disability communities in many countries, and that is “Nothing about us without us”. This term is usually used to refer to the making of laws and operation of services without prior consultation with the disability community, including library services.

Employing disabled people as staff ties into some of the core philosophies of libraries: improving access, diversity, democracy, open education, lifelong learning, and social responsibility.

Disabled staff members have the benefit (for us!) of having faced accessibility issues of varying kinds in their own lives. They are often able to use this experience to …

Report: Native Seed Stakeholder Meeting 2019, Laura E. Fischer Walter Apr 2019

Report: Native Seed Stakeholder Meeting 2019, Laura E. Fischer Walter

Tallgrass Prairie Publications and Reports

The purpose of this meeting was to convene stakeholders – to bring together knowledgeable people invested in the native seed industry to work out solutions to pressing problems. This fits the mission of the TPC through our interest in supporting high quality restoration projects that “save all the cogs and wheels” by capturing and propagating the species and genetic diversity of remnant prairies.

Today in Iowa, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is the biggest program using native plant materials, followed by the Department of Transportation. Early in its history, CRP plantings were not seen as an opportunity for ecological restoration. …

Defining And Measuring Quality In Acute Paediatric Trauma Stabilisation: A Phenomenographic Study., Ralph James Mackinnon, Karin Pukk-Härenstam, Ulrica Von Thiele Schwarz, Christopher S. Kennedy, Terese Stenfors Apr 2019

Defining And Measuring Quality In Acute Paediatric Trauma Stabilisation: A Phenomenographic Study., Ralph James Mackinnon, Karin Pukk-Härenstam, Ulrica Von Thiele Schwarz, Christopher S. Kennedy, Terese Stenfors

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Objectives: Trauma is the leading cause of death in children. The lack of an accepted definition of what constitutes a high-quality stabilisation of a traumatically injured child has limited the evaluation of direct interventions in simulation-based education and service-delivery models to improve trauma care. The aim of this study was to create a framework that delineates quality by exploring the perceptions of the multi-disciplinary team providing and improving this initial care.

Methods: Interviews were conducted with 36 experienced UK trauma team members and governance administrators (clinical directors to executive board level), from three standard UK trauma units. This study used …

Trust The Process: A Templated, Centralized, And Protocolized Patient Safety Pilot Project To Improve Outside Admissions, Alan A. Kubey, Md, Jeffrey M. Riggio, Md

Department of Medicine Posters

Transfers are high-risk. Intra-hospital transfer processes research has improved protocols used nationally.1 Outside-hospital admissions remain without standards ensuring the transfer of the right information to the right clinician at the right time; presently, patients can arrive at a new hospital with limited-to-no information.2We trialed a novel process for outside (hospital, provider, or skilled nursing facility) admissions to a single academic medical center’s resident and- hospital-medicine-attending-based (“teaching”) medicine services.

Investigation Of Cold Stress Induced Disease Resistance (Sidr) In Grapevines And Arabidopsis, Cal D. Palumbo Apr 2019

Investigation Of Cold Stress Induced Disease Resistance (Sidr) In Grapevines And Arabidopsis, Cal D. Palumbo

Theses

The focus of this thesis project was to investigate the impact of cold temperature conditions on the resistance of Vitis vinifera (grapevines) to powdery mildew, a phenomenon known as cold stress-induced disease resistance (SIDR). The model organism Arabidopsis thaliana was used to determine specific defense mechanisms of plant-pathogen resistance. An RNA-Seq time course experiment was performed for the two organisms: V. vinifera and A. thaliana. The time-series datasets consisted of data points where samples were exposed to an acute (less than 4 hours) cold (below 8°C) temperature for set times prior to inoculation with powdery mildew. The acute cold time …

The Lowest-Energy Isomer Of C2Si2H4 Is A Bridged Ring: Reinterpretation Of The Spectroscopic Data Based On Dft And Coupled-Cluster Calculations, Jesse J. Lutz, Larry W. Burggraf Apr 2019

The Lowest-Energy Isomer Of C2Si2H4 Is A Bridged Ring: Reinterpretation Of The Spectroscopic Data Based On Dft And Coupled-Cluster Calculations, Jesse J. Lutz, Larry W. Burggraf

Faculty Publications

The lowest-energy isomer of C2Si2H4 is determined by high-accuracy ab initio calculations to be the bridged four-membered ring 1,2-didehydro-1,3-disilabicyclo[1.1.0]butane (1), contrary to prior theoretical and experimental studies favoring the three-member ring silylsilacyclopropenylidene (2). These and eight other low-lying minima on the potential energy surface are characterized and ordered by energy using the CCSD(T) method with complete basis set extrapolation, and the resulting benchmark-quality set of relative isomer energies is used to evaluate the performance of several comparatively inexpensive approaches based on many-body perturbation theory and density functional theory (DFT). Double-hybrid DFT methods are found to …

How Faculty Demonstrate Impact: A Multi-Institutional Study Of Faculty Understandings, Perceptions, And Strategies Regarding Impact Metrics, Caitlin Bakker, Jonathan Bull, Nancy Courtney, Dan Desanto, Allison Langham-Putrow, Jenny Mcburney, Aaron Nichols

Library Faculty Presentations

Faculty and institutions are increasingly called upon to present succinct, quantified descriptions of their research impact to administrators, funders, legislators, and academics. This project sought to explore how and what researchers think about research impact measures across disciplines and institutions. Presenters will discuss findings from a multi-institutional survey of faculty (n=1202) addressing their familiarity with metrics and altmetrics and impression of the accuracy of these metrics. We discuss how researchers use such statistical measures to demonstrate the importance of their scholarship, and their attitudes towards use of scholarly metrics by administrators. We also address possible implications for librarians supporting these …

Delay Discount Rate Moderates A Physical Activity Intervention Testing Immediate Rewards, Christine B. Phillips, Jane C. Hurley, Siddhartha S. Angadi, Michael Todd, Vincent Berardi, Melbourne Hovell, Marc A. Adams Apr 2019

Delay Discount Rate Moderates A Physical Activity Intervention Testing Immediate Rewards, Christine B. Phillips, Jane C. Hurley, Siddhartha S. Angadi, Michael Todd, Vincent Berardi, Melbourne Hovell, Marc A. Adams

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Financial incentives can increase physical activity (PA), but differences in the immediacy of reward delivery and individual differences in delay discount rates (i.e., higher discount values associated with less tolerance for delayed rewards) may explain differential responding. The current study tested whether delay discount rate moderated the relative effectiveness of immediate financial rewards on increasing daily PA. Inactive, overweight adults (ages 18–60, N = 96) were randomized to receive either smaller, immediate goal-contingent rewards or larger, delayed rewards for participation. Delay discount rates were derived for those who completed the Monetary Choice Questionnaire (N = 85). Linear mixed models tested …

Preventing Child Sexual Abuse And Juvenile Offending Through Parental Monitoring, Kelly E. Stewart Apr 2019

Preventing Child Sexual Abuse And Juvenile Offending Through Parental Monitoring, Kelly E. Stewart

Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I present three manuscripts to investigate the prevention of a range of crimes committed against, and by, youth, using parental monitoring or guardianship. In the first paper, I tested whether the routine activities of juvenile sexual offenders (JSOs) and their victims' caregivers was associated with the JSO being placed into a supervisory role, and whether subgroup differences existed in the use of modus operandi strategies between JSO supervisors and non-supervisors (Chapter II). Findings indicated that parents' need for childcare assistance predicted JSO supervisor status more strongly than perpetrators efforts to get the child alone or disruptions to …

Gentrification And Student Achievement: A Quantitative Analysis Of Student Performance On Standardized Tests In Portland's Gentrifying Neighborhoods, Justin Joseph Ward Apr 2019

Gentrification And Student Achievement: A Quantitative Analysis Of Student Performance On Standardized Tests In Portland's Gentrifying Neighborhoods, Justin Joseph Ward

Dissertations and Theses

Across the United States one would be hard pressed to find an urban center that has been unaffected by the phenomenon known as gentrification. From substantial economic growth to the displacement of long-term residents, the benefits and criticisms of the process of gentrification are wide ranging and extend over a thorough body of literature. Commonly associated with increasing levels of education and higher resident incomes, gentrification should be a boon to struggling public schools that are continually plagued by generational poverty. Unfortunately, the continued widening of the education gap and increasing racial segregation in our public schools suggest that any …

Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation Program As Driver Of Regional Energy Projects To Promote Energy Security In The Post-Soviet Central Asia, F. S. Aminjonov Apr 2019

Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation Program As Driver Of Regional Energy Projects To Promote Energy Security In The Post-Soviet Central Asia, F. S. Aminjonov

All Works

The resource-sharing mechanism, which ensured sufficiency and reliability of energy supplies within the Central Asian energy system (CAES) collapsed soon after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Isolationist energy policies, both in terms of full self-reliance and self-control, without the establishment of self-sustaining independent energy systems, not only threatened security of energy supplies, but also, to a different extent, hampered the socio-economic development in Central Asia. In an attempt to mitigate the negative impact of the new energy policies, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) supported Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) was introduced as one of the key programs to …

Information Sources And Factors Influencing Enrolment In Ict And Stem University Study Programmes, Dunja Meštrović, Lidija Bagarić, Nataša Jakominić Marot

Economic and Business Review

In a demanding and increasingly competitive higher education marketplace, the awareness of the reasons why prospective students choose a certain study programme and information sources they use during their decision-making process is essential to develop institutional positioning, thus requiring deeper understanding. This paper aims to explore students’ decision-making processes, focusing on the information sources and factors influencing their decisions. The results contribute to the understanding of factors influencing students’ decision-making and provide the evidence about the factors and information sources influencing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students’ choice, which can serve as implications …

Organizational Design And Organizational Learning: The Moderating Role Of Innovative Behavior And Team Psychological Empowerment In The Case Of An International Sustainable Mobility Provider, Sandra Penger, Barbara Grah Apr 2019

Organizational Design And Organizational Learning: The Moderating Role Of Innovative Behavior And Team Psychological Empowerment In The Case Of An International Sustainable Mobility Provider, Sandra Penger, Barbara Grah

Economic and Business Review

We have investigated how organizational design facilitates organizational learning in the age of digital economy at exploring the cross-level interplay. In this inductive case study of a sustainable mobility provider, we conducted a three-level coding procedure. We found evidence for two moderators — innovative behavior at the individual level and team psychological empowerment at the team level — to propose the conceptual model of their interplay with regard to predicting organizational learning. Based on these findings, we developed a conceptual model of the cross-level interplay between organizational design and the moderating role of innovative behavior and team psychological empowerment in …

Levelling The Playing Field: The Effects Of Slovenia’S 2013 Labour Market Reform, Matija Vodopivec Apr 2019

Levelling The Playing Field: The Effects Of Slovenia’S 2013 Labour Market Reform, Matija Vodopivec

Economic and Business Review

The paper examines the effects of the 2013 labour market reform in Slovenia which made permanent contracts less restrictive and fixed-term contracts more restrictive. Using matched employer-employee data, the differences in the outcomes for workers employed under permanent vs. fixed-term contracts before and after the legislative change are compared. The results show that the reform was successful in both reducing labour market segmentation and improving access to jobs for vulnerable groups: (i) it increased the probability of accessing permanent jobs via transitions from both fixed-term jobs and unemployment, and (ii) it improved the accessibility of permanent jobs for both young …
