Student Papers, Posters & Projects

We assessed online health insurance plan indication of coverage and accessibility of information for recommended services for transgender youth (TY). Content analysis was performed for plans used at a pediatric Gender Clinic by reviewing information about coverage of puberty blockers, hormones, masculinizing chest surgery, and counseling. Transgender-specific exclusions and the time required for the research assistant to review each plan's online information were noted. No plan (0%; n=36) indicated coverage of all four categories of recommended services online. Forty-nine percent indicated ≥1 transgender-specific exclusion. The median time required for a research assistant to review online coverage information for each insurance …

Hebert, Marcelo Medeiros Pinheiro

Introduction: Adequate nutrition, including intake of dietary calcium and vitamin D, is important to maintain bone health. Evidence suggests that a deficiency in micronutrients may contribute to bone loss during aging and exert generalized effects on chronic inflammation. Recently, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was developed to assess the inflammatory potential of individual diets. Our aim was to evaluate the DII in a representative sample and verify its association with low-impact fractures.

Methods: Individuals from The Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS) database had their DII calculated. BRAZOS is an important cross-sectional epidemiological study carried out with a representative sample of men …

Menstrual Hygiene And Vulnerable Populations: Examining The Role Of Nursing In Issues Of Social Justice, Kristen Kurlander Apr 2019

Menstrual Hygiene And Vulnerable Populations: Examining The Role Of Nursing In Issues Of Social Justice, Kristen Kurlander

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

The purpose of this paper is to explore common barriers to menstrual hygiene among vulnerable populations on a domestic and global scale. The term “period poverty” is a popular phrase used to describe the challenges that some women face when managing their menstrual health. Common barriers to good menstrual health management are limited access to feminine hygiene products due to environmental factors or financial instability, limited access to clean, private bathing spaces and a social stigma against menstruation that contributes to feelings of embarrassment and shame. This paper will summarize the effects that poor menstrual hygiene can have on health …

The Potential For Great White Sharks To Frequent The Long Island Sound, Jake Mccarthy Apr 2019

The Potential For Great White Sharks To Frequent The Long Island Sound, Jake Mccarthy

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

There are a few species of sharks that regularly inhabit the coastal waters of Long Island, New York. Rising water temperatures and increasing human/seal populations in the New England/Long Island region have the potential to cause alterations in local species composition, especially as white shark populations continue to grow in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Increased competition may drive species such as sand tiger sharks and white sharks into areas previously thought to house low shark concentrations, such as the Long Island Sound. This work was written so that tourists and the people of New England become informed as to the …

Enforcing The Gender Binary And Its Implications On Nonbinary Identities: An Exploration Of The Linguistic And Social Erasure Of Nonbinary Individuals In The United States, Jack Shearer Apr 2019

Enforcing The Gender Binary And Its Implications On Nonbinary Identities: An Exploration Of The Linguistic And Social Erasure Of Nonbinary Individuals In The United States, Jack Shearer

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

In American society’s history, there has been a strong agreement on the existence of only two genders - male and female. However, there are people outside this binary called “nonbinary” individuals. The gender binary, whose enforcement begins with language and the spreading of binary ideology, prevents nonbinary people from partaking in daily life without being misgendered. Much of gender perception is based upon the “gender schema”, which organizes traits into categories of “male” and “female” when judging others. The ramifications include, and are not limited to, social, medical, and legal discrimination. The option for a legal third sex with the …

Strategic Audit Of Adidas, Mason Wright Apr 2019

Strategic Audit Of Adidas, Mason Wright

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Adidas is a well-established brand in the world of sportswear and lifestyle clothing. In recent years, the company has been regaining success after a period of stagnation. Spurring this success is the renewed popularity of old classic shoe models and a surge in the lifestyle clothing trend. While adidas is doing well, it is not the top sportswear company in the world and is far behind in North America. In an attempt to boost the recent success even further, this thesis analyzes the current situation that adidas faces including its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. With this information as a …

Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

We examined the effects of a professional development (PD) system designed to support teachers’ use of data-based instruction (DBI) to improve early writing outcomes for children with intensive needs. The PD system, called DBI-TLC, provided tools for early writing assessment and intervention, learning modules including face-to-face workshops followed by classroom application, and ongoing coaching to support DBI implementation. Special education teachers in 19 classrooms in 2 Midwestern districts were assigned randomly to receive DBI-TLC or to a business-as-usual control group. All teachers completed pre- and posttests of DBI knowledge and skills and self-efficacy, and DBI-TLC teachers’ fidelity to DBI was …

Vibration-Based In-Situ Detection And Quantification Of Delamination In Composite Plates, Hanfei Mei, Asaad Migot, Mohammad Faisal Haider, Roshan Joseph, Md Yeasin Bhuiyan, Victor Giurgiutiu

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new methodology for detecting and quantifying delamination in composite plates based on the high-frequency local vibration under the excitation of piezoelectric wafer active sensors. Finite-element-method-based numerical simulations and experimental measurements were performed to quantify the size, shape, and depth of the delaminations. Two composite plates with purpose-built delaminations of different sizes and depths were analyzed. In the experiments, ultrasonic C-scan was applied to visualize the simulated delaminations. In this methodology, piezoelectric wafer active sensors were used for the high-frequency excitation with a linear sine wave chirp from 1 to 500 kHz and a scanning laser Doppler …

Gasdermin Pores Permeabilize Mitochondria To Augment Caspase-3 Activation During Apoptosis And Inflammasome Activation., Corey Rogers, Dan A. Erkes, Alexandria Nardone, Andrew E. Aplin, Teresa Fernandes-Alnemri, Emad S. Alnemri

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Gasdermin E (GSDME/DFNA5) cleavage by caspase-3 liberates the GSDME-N domain, which mediates pyroptosis by forming pores in the plasma membrane. Here we show that GSDME-N also permeabilizes the mitochondrial membrane, releasing cytochrome c and activating the apoptosome. Cytochrome c release and caspase-3 activation in response to intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic stimuli are significantly reduced in GSDME-deficient cells comparing with wild type cells. GSDME deficiency also accelerates cell growth in culture and in a mouse model of melanoma. Phosphomimetic mutation of the highly conserved phosphorylatable Thr6 residue of GSDME, inhibits its pore-forming activity, thus uncovering a potential mechanism by which GSDME …
