Review: Looming Civil War, Olivia Ortman Apr 2019

Review: Looming Civil War, Olivia Ortman

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

In Looming Civil War, Phillips writes about the future, specifically, the one predicted by nineteenth-century Americans in the years preceding the Civil War. Challenging dominant narratives of the war, Phillips argues that nineteenth-century individuals were fully aware of a looming civil war and that many believed it would be a long, bloody, and disastrous conflict, not just a short excursion. As individuals looked to the uncertain future, they all made predictions unique to their race, religion, gender, and location. Some white southern elites saw the looming war as an Armageddon that would destroy civilized society, while abolitionists and slaves …

Demonstration Of Record-High Mm-Wave Power Performance Using N-Polar Gallium Nitride Hemts, Brian Romanczyk

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Gallium Nitride high electron mobility transistors (GaN HEMTs) are proven to be well suited devices for highly efficient solid-state radio frequency power amplification, especially when high output power is desired. Existing GaN transistor technologies using the Ga-polar crystal orientation (0001) have been demonstrated operating at millimeter-wave frequencies (30 to 300 GHz). While these Ga-polar devices have demonstrated good large signal functionality, their performance has largely saturated. With growing interest in communication and imaging applications operating at mm-wave frequencies there is a need for transistors technologies with higher performance at these frequencies. This work focuses on the development and demonstration of …

Enhancing The Anti-Tumor Efficacy Of T Cells With Naturally Occurring Plant Stilbenes, Elle Richardson, Andrea Leigh Soles Apr 2019

Enhancing The Anti-Tumor Efficacy Of T Cells With Naturally Occurring Plant Stilbenes, Elle Richardson, Andrea Leigh Soles

Undergraduate Publications

Despite advances in treatment options, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States. Many therapies use immune cells, specifically T cells, for cancer therapy. To enhance tumor recognition by T cells, chimeric antigen receptors consisting of signaling domains fused to receptors that recognize tumor antigens can be created and expressed in T cells. One receptor that is a prospective target for a chimeric antigen receptor is PD1 because the ligands for the PD1 receptor are expressed on many cancer types. Our lab has genetically engineered a chimeric PD1 (chPD1) receptor and has shown that chPD1-expressing T …

Loss Of A Sibling: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Experiences Of School-Aged Children, Barbara Dixon Apr 2019

Loss Of A Sibling: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Experiences Of School-Aged Children, Barbara Dixon

Dissertations

More than 50,000 child mortalities are recorded in the U.S. each year. As a result, almost 8% of the population experience the loss of a brother or sister before age 25 (Jacobs & Bovasso, 2000). This study was an open conversational exchange with ten Grief Counselors who worked with school-aged children, who had experienced the loss of a sibling, to identify the behaviors and expressions of this group of Disenfranchised Grievers. Three patterns were identified: 1) Grief in children takes different forms, 2) Sibling loss in childhood is a life-changing event and 3) Childhood grief has its own time. Each …
