Universal Cash And Crime, Brett Watson, Matthew Reimer, Mouhcine Guettabi Apr 2019

Universal Cash And Crime, Brett Watson, Matthew Reimer, Mouhcine Guettabi

ISER Reports

We estimate the effects of universal cash transfers on crime from Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend, an annual lump-sum payment to all Alaska residents. We find a 14% increase in substance-abuse incidents the day after the payment and a 10% increase over the following four weeks. This is partially offset by a 8% decrease in property crime, with no changes in violent crimes. On an annual basis, however, changes in criminal activity from the payment are small. Estimated costs comprise a very small portion of the total payment, suggesting that crime-related concerns of a universal cash transfer program may be unwarranted.

Universal Cash Transfers And Labor Market Outcomes, Andrew Bibler, Mouhcine Guettabi, Matthew Reimer Apr 2019

Universal Cash Transfers And Labor Market Outcomes, Andrew Bibler, Mouhcine Guettabi, Matthew Reimer

ISER Reports

One major criticism of universal basic income is that unconditional cash transfers discourage recipients from working. We estimate the causal effects of a universal cash transfer on short-run labor market activity by exploiting the timing and variation of a long-running unconditional and universal transfer: Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend. We find evidence of both a positive labor demand and negative labor supply response to the transfers, document important heterogeneity across workers, and provide a set of placebo tests supporting our main results. Altogether, a $1,000 increase in the per-person disbursement leads to a 0.2% labor market contraction on an annual basis.

Universal Cash Transfers Reduce Childhood Obesity Rates, Brett Watson, Matthew Reimer, Mouhcine Guettabi Apr 2019

Universal Cash Transfers Reduce Childhood Obesity Rates, Brett Watson, Matthew Reimer, Mouhcine Guettabi

ISER Reports

We evaluate the impact of universal income on childhood obesity. While the goals of implementing universal income are many, its influence on childhood obesity is of particular interest given the growing obesity epidemic and its future threat to global public health. We use evidence from Alaska’s universal income program, the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD), which has provided annual, unconditional, and universal income to Alaskan residents for over thirty-five years. We use both survey and administrative data to evaluate how the availability of unconditional resources at an early developmental stage, in terms of PFD payments to the child, affects a child’s …

On The Capability Of Metal-Halogen Groups To Participate In Halogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner Apr 2019

On The Capability Of Metal-Halogen Groups To Participate In Halogen Bonds, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A number of halogen (X) atoms were covalently attached to a metal (M) and the ability of the X atom to act as electron acceptor in a halogen bond to nucleophile NCH was assessed. Both Cl and Br were considered as halogen atom, with NH3 and CO as other ligands attached to the metal. Metals tested were Ti, Mn, and Zn in various combinations of oxidation state, coordination, and overall charge. In the majority of cases, the strong electron-releasing power of the metal imbues the halogen atom with a high negative partial charge and minimizes the development of a σ-hole. …

A High Magnification Uv Lens For High Temperature Optical Strain Measurements, Robert S. Hansen, Trevor J. Bird, Ren Voie, Katharine Z. Burn, Ryan B. Berke Apr 2019

A High Magnification Uv Lens For High Temperature Optical Strain Measurements, Robert S. Hansen, Trevor J. Bird, Ren Voie, Katharine Z. Burn, Ryan B. Berke

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measures full-field strains by tracking displacements of a specimen using images taken before and after deformation. At high temperatures, materials emit light in the form of blackbody radiation, which can interfere with DIC images. To screen out that light, DIC has been recently adapted by using ultraviolet (UV) range cameras, lenses, and filters. Before now, UV-DIC had been demonstrated at the centimeter scale using commercially available UV lenses and filters. Commercial high-magnification lenses using visible light have also been used for DIC. However, there is currently no commercially available high-magnification lens that will allow images to …

Bathymetric Surveying In Lake Superior: 3d Modeling And Sonar Equipment Comparing, Eugene Levin, Guy Meadows, Roman Shults, Utku Karacelebi, Hasan Salih Kulunk

School of Technology Publications

This paper represents the overview of hydrographic surveying and different types of modern and traditional surveying equipment, and data acquisition using the traditional single beam sonar system and a modern fully autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) IVER3. During the study, the data sets were collected using the vehicles of the Great Lake Research Center at Michigan Technological University. This paper presents how to process and edit the bathymetric data on SonarWiz5. Lastly, it compares the accuracy of the two different sonar systems in the different missions and creates 3D models to display and understand the elevations changes. Moreover, the 3D models …

Gender Differences In Adhd, Jillian Vogley Apr 2019

Gender Differences In Adhd, Jillian Vogley

Honors Theses

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a learning disability that is very prevalent in today’s society. A closer look at this disability reveals that there are differences with males and females with regards to how the symptoms manifest. Females have a tendency to exhibit inattention whereas males are often hyperactive, which is much more obvious to others around them. This difference in symptoms has led to a drastic difference in terms of how ADHD is diagnosed and causes it to be underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in females compared to males. The consequences that this delayed diagnosis may have on females can be severe. …

Investigation Of Fouling Mechanisms On Ion Exchange Membranes During Electrolytic Separations, Matthew James Edwards Apr 2019

Investigation Of Fouling Mechanisms On Ion Exchange Membranes During Electrolytic Separations, Matthew James Edwards

Honors Theses

The global water crisis is a major problem in our developing world due to the increasing growth of our global population, the depletion of natural water resources, and the continuing contamination of existing water resources as a result of industrialization. Membrane separation is a potential solution for these issues. Electrodialysis (ED) is a separation process which employs membranes to separate inorganic and organic substances. This study investigated how different fouling agents influenced membrane surface characteristic and separation efficiency within an electrodialysis system. While applicable for waste water, this study focuses on model salt water solutions with various fouling agents added …

Avatar Kinect: Drama In The Virtual Classroom Among L2 Learners Of English, Robert Bianchi, Byrad Yyelland, Joseph John Yang, Molly Mcharg

The Qualitative Report

This study presents a qualitative approach to exploring classroom behaviour using dramaturgical analysis of student interactions in relation with, and as mediated through, a gesture-based gaming software among L2 learners of English at two international branch campuses in the Arabian Gulf where face-to-face interactions between unrelated members of the opposite sex are generally discouraged. We investigated whether Avatar Kinect might provide a safe way for young males and females to interact while discussing social issues in a composition course. Data were collected through personal observation and survey. Five key themes emerged from the study. First, some participants chose to perform …

Stories Matter: Reaffirming The Value Of Qualitative Research, Samantha Mcaleese, Jennifer M. Kilty Apr 2019

Stories Matter: Reaffirming The Value Of Qualitative Research, Samantha Mcaleese, Jennifer M. Kilty

The Qualitative Report

While the social sciences are experiencing narrative and emotional turns that are largely based on exploratory and theoretical qualitative research, the problematic dismissal of qualitative research approaches continues to loom large outside academia. Frequently described as a collection of “anecdotal stories,” qualitative research is dismissed as unscientific and unreliable— comments that limit the perceived usefulness of qualitative findings, especially in terms of policy reform. This article problematizes evaluating qualitative research according to quantitative measures of rigour and explores the richness and value of documenting experiential stories and the process of storying in social science research. Notably, we take up the …

Price Determinants Of Recreational Land In Illinois, Cameron Hupp Apr 2019

Price Determinants Of Recreational Land In Illinois, Cameron Hupp

Research Papers

It’s no secret that Illinois farmland is extremely expensive and has been on a steady rise for the past several decades. The highly sought after features of many different pieces of Illinois farmland coupled with the favorable growing climate found in Illinois translates to advantageous yields and potential for substantial revenues for farmers and landowners. Although prices have remained relatively stagnant throughout the past few years, it can be inferred that the long-term trend of farmland value will continue its path trending upward. With this being said, the margin for profit will become even slimmer and the ag real estate …

Improving Identification And Child-Focused Collaborative Care For Children Of Parents With A Mental Illness In Tyrol, Austria, Hanna Christiansen, Annette Bauer, Batool Fatima, Melinda Goodyear, Ingunn Olea Lund, Ingrid Zechmeister-Koss, Jean Lillian Paul

Community Health Sciences

Background: Children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) are more likely to experience negative long-term adversities. However, interventions to support their needs early can significantly enhance adjustment and reduce negative outcomes. Approximately one in four children currently lives with a parent with mental illness worldwide. The lifelong impact for individuals, governments, and broader society is likely to be substantial. There are significant workforce barriers to the early identification of COPMI and addressing their needs, particularly within the adult mental health care system. The current study aims to reduce such barriers and to improve identification of COPMI in the current …
