Marcia Levetown Oral History. Apr 2019

Marcia Levetown Oral History.

Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project

As an intensivist, Dr. Levetown noted three things: 1. a large proportion of critically ill kids were actually "chronically dying." 2. families' information about their child's condition was incomplete or inaccurate and, feeding unrealistic hopes and influencing decisions based on outcomes that "were really not on the table." And 3. family units were often overwhelmed by the child's illness, too often leaving the family unit in varying levels of social, physical, mental, and emotion ruin. Dr. Levetown described her early experience with palliative care and hospice, her involvement with several research projects on reforming the culture of death at the …

Maternal Hemoglobin Concentrations Across Pregnancy And Maternal And Child Health: A Systematic Review And Meta‐Analysis, Melissa F. Young, Brietta M. Oaks, Sonia Tandon, Reynaldo Martorell, Kathryn G. Dewey, Amanda S. Wendt Apr 2019

Maternal Hemoglobin Concentrations Across Pregnancy And Maternal And Child Health: A Systematic Review And Meta‐Analysis, Melissa F. Young, Brietta M. Oaks, Sonia Tandon, Reynaldo Martorell, Kathryn G. Dewey, Amanda S. Wendt

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Maternal anemia is a well‐recognized global health problem; however, there remain questions on specific hemoglobin (Hb) thresholds that predict health risk or protection for mother and child. We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis to examine the associations of maternal Hb concentrations with a range of maternal and infant health outcomes, accounting for the timing of measurement (preconception, and first, second, and third trimesters), etiology of anemia, and cutoff category. The systematic review included 272 studies and the meta‐analysis included 95 studies. Low maternal Hb (<110 g/L) was associated with poor birth outcomes (low birth weight, preterm birth, small‐for‐gestational‐age (SGA), stillbirth, and perinatal and neonatal mortality) and adverse maternal outcomes (postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, and blood transfusion). High maternal Hb (>130 g/L) was associated with increased odds of SGA, stillbirth, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes. …

Weighted Version Of Generalized Inverse Weibull Distribution, Sofi Mudiasir, S. P. Ahmad Apr 2019

Weighted Version Of Generalized Inverse Weibull Distribution, Sofi Mudiasir, S. P. Ahmad

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Weighted distributions are used in many fields, such as medicine, ecology, and reliability. A weighted version of the generalized inverse Weibull distribution, known as weighted generalized inverse Weibull distribution (WGIWD), is proposed. Basic properties including mode, moments, moment generating function, skewness, kurtosis, and Shannon’s entropy are studied. The usefulness of the new model was demonstrated by applying it to a real-life data set. The WGIWD fits better than its submodels, such as length biased generalized inverse Weibull (LGIW), generalized inverse Weibull (GIW), inverse Weibull (IW) and inverse exponential (IE) distributions.

Cold Plasma Poration And Corrugation Of Pumpkin Seed Coats, Alexander G. Volkov, Jewel S. Hairston, Darayas Patel, Ryan P. Gott, Kunning G. Xu Apr 2019

Cold Plasma Poration And Corrugation Of Pumpkin Seed Coats, Alexander G. Volkov, Jewel S. Hairston, Darayas Patel, Ryan P. Gott, Kunning G. Xu

PRC-Affiliated Research

The treatment of seeds and plants by electrically generated cold atmospheric pressure plasma can accelerate seed germination and radicle growing rates. The plasma generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, UV photons, and high frequency electromagnetic fields can penetrate into seed coats and modify their surface properties. Atomic force microscope data shows that cold helium or argon plasma induces strong corrugation of pumpkin seed coats, produces pores and surface defects. These structural deformations and poration enhance water uptake by seeds during the imbibing process, accelerate seeds germination, and increase seed growth. The cold atmospheric pressure plasmas treatment of pumpkin seeds also …

Branch Campuses: Extending The Reach Of Social Work Education, Simon Funge, Dana Sullivan, Larry Owens, Whitney Harper

Social Work Faculty Publications

The study explored the characteristics and experiences of branch campus social work education programs and educators in the U.S. Eighty-one (n = 81) branch campus social work educators in 26 states completed an online survey. Findings revealed that undergraduate and graduate branch campus social work education was primarily delivered face-to-face to non-traditional students. Half of these programs were recently established, and the majority were expected to grow. However, teaching these students was not necessarily viewed as a shared responsibility. Though some branch campus faculty reported higher workloads and limited connections to parent campus colleagues, faculty generally reported great satisfaction teaching …

Microbial Community Dynamics During Lake Ice Freezing, Timothy M. Butler, Anna-Catharina Wilhelm, Amber C. Dwyer, Paige N. Webb, Andrew L. Baldwin, Stephen Techtmann

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

Many freshwater environments experience dramatic seasonal changes with some systems remaining ice-covered for most of the winter. Freshwater systems are also highly sensitive to environmental change. However, little is known about changes in microbial abundance and community composition during lake ice formation and times of persistent ice cover. The goal of this study is to characterize temporal dynamics of microbial communities during ice formation and persistent ice cover. Samples were collected in triplicate, five days per week from surface water in the Keweenaw Waterway between November and April. Environmental conditions along with microbial abundance and microbial community composition was determined. …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Radiometric dating methods are essential for developing geochronologies to study Late Quaternary environmental change and 210Pb dating is commonly used to produce age-depth models from recent (within 150 years) sediments and other geoarchives. The past two centuries are marked by rapid environmental socio-ecological changes frequently attributed to anthropogenic land-use activities, modified biogeochemical cycles, and climate change. Consequently, historical reconstructions over this recent time interval have high societal value because analyses of these datasets provide understanding of the consequences of environmental modifications, critical ecosystem thresholds, and to define desirable ranges of variation for management, restoration, and conservation.
