1. Algal biofuels have been investigated as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels for transportation in the United States since the 1970s. Yet after five decades of development, scalability and implementation remain limited. To evaluate the state of progress, this study harmonized energy inputs and outputs across 39 papers, encompassing 508 observations on the production of algal biofuel energy return on energy investment (EROEI) in the United States. The analysis produced a mean EROEI of 1.01—essentially the break-even point—irrespective of system boundaries. This is lower than bioethanol (2.8) and far below oil (8.7). Through investigations of human-impacts on wildlife species, we've seen how our habits and inventions have greatly impacted our wild neighbors. Often, we highlight the negative aspects that are driving species toward extinction, and we tend to lose track of how amazingly adaptive wildlife can be. Liquid biofuels are widely promoted as renewable, lower-emission alternatives to fossil fuels. Yet despite their promise, this sector faces a critical constraint: a long-term decline in the productivity of innovation. This decline—measured by a decreasing number of patents per inventor—suggests that generating technological breakthroughs is becoming more difficult, expensive, and uncertain. As innovation becomes more resource-intensive, the feasibility of replacing petroleum with liquid biofuels grows more tenuous. This is especially problematic given the pre-existing technical disadvantages of biofuels, including their relatively low energy return on energy investment (EROEI) and energy density compared to fossil fuels. Advances in wearables and AI enable real-time stress detection for JITAI, yet long-term stress reduction remains difficult because interventions must align with the underlying stressors. Traditional methods like annual or end-of-day surveys miss many stressors due to recall bias or participant burden. AI-triggered prompts offer a timely and low-burden alternative for capturing real-world stressors as they occur. To demonstrate the feasibility of using AI-triggered prompts for real-time stressor capture, we conducted the MOODS Study, a 100-day field study with 122 participants wearing smartwatches equipped with a pre-trained stress model. This dissertation explores the intertwined relationships between K–5 educators and the external environments of their schools. Drawing on post-qualitative inquiry, the study rejects traditional linear methodologies in favor of walking-with, a practice of movement, noticing, and attunement that foregrounds affective intensities and material encounters. Through walking-with, artifact-based reflections, and journaling, this research maps how teachers experience, interpret, and are shaped by the spaces that surround their schools. The dissertation presents vignettes and poetic fragments as affective offerings that illuminate how space, pedagogy, and community intermingle. These moments reveal tensions and possibilities around safety, visibility, infrastructure, play, and cultural connection, while …

This study explores othermothering as a cultural and political practice among African American girls in Memphis, Tennessee. While most scholarship on othermothering centers the voices of adult women, this research foregrounds the perspectives of African American girls, illuminating how they interpret and experience the influence of othermothers on their identity formation. Guided by Black Feminist Thought, Africana Womanism, and arts-based inquiry, the study situates othermothering as a theoretical framework that is both intimate and political by nurturing personal growth while resisting deficit narratives that marginalize Black girlhood. The aim of this research is to contribute to the documentation of Lomongo, a Bantu language spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In this study, we focused on two morphological aspects of medicinal plant names in Lomongo: nominal morphology and morpho-syntax. To collect data, we engaged with two categories of informants: primary informants (traditional healers) and secondary informants (native Lomongo speakers). Ethnobotanical and ethnolinguistic surveys were conducted in the “Elandisha” Mavaolo area through participant observation, semi-structured interview guides, audio recordings, and photographs. Understanding the interplay between cultural beliefs, language, and environmental signals is crucial for comprehending how communities engage with their natural surroundings. Despite existing research on cultural interpretations of natural phenomena, little is known about how animal calls and sightings specifically predict omens within the Iraqw community in Tanzania. This study examines the Iraqw ethnozoolinguistics of omens, focusing on their role in forecasting social events, both positive and negative, and on how these signals reflect the community’s cultural understanding. Morphological And Semantic Analysis Of Plant Names Attested In Hehe Language In Tanzania, Onesmo Simon Nyinondi

This paper examines the morphological structure of plant names in Hehe, a Bantu language spoken in the Iringa Region of Tanzania, specifically in the rural areas of Mufindi and Kilolo districts, involving 169 participants. Data were collected through free listings, field interviews (also known as walk-in-the-woods interviews), focus group discussions, and the analysis of written texts containing Hehe plant names. The study shows that Hehe plant names consist of a noun class prefix and a noun stem, with most falling into the 3/4 and 5/6 pairs. Some plant names are also categorised in the 7/8, mainly small plants, and 9/10 …
