BACKGROUND: Facilitating placental transfusion-the transfer of blood from the placenta to the newborn-via delayed cord clamping (DCC) or umbilical cord milking (UCM) at birth has been shown to improve iron stores in healthy term infants and may positively impact long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. Infants who are non-vigorous at birth and at risk of developing hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are particularly likely to benefit from placental transfusion. This process may offer neuroprotection by enhancing cardiopulmonary transition, supporting cardiac preload, improving systemic and cerebral perfusion, delivering stem cells and neurotrophic factors, and preventing iron deficiency. While DCC is not currently recommended for non-vigorous term …

Radiation Hardness Study Of Finfet And Gate-All-Around Fet Sram, Albert Lu
Master's Theses
Radiation, such as alpha particles or neutrons, is hard to control and can come from sources such as trace impurities or cosmic rays from space. These can then strike a semiconductor device, such as a Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) cell, and cause the SRAM to have its bit flipped. This bit flip is often just a temporary effect and is thus called a single event upset (SEU). Although it is temporary, a bit flip can cause severe consequences, such as affecting program functionality by causing incorrect data to be used. This is made worse in critical environments that need …
Conflicting Bases For Judging Action And Actors: The Role Of Individual Differences, Brittney Louramore
Conflicting Bases For Judging Action And Actors: The Role Of Individual Differences, Brittney Louramore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined how political orientation, locus of control, and action identification predict moral reasoning across six dilemmas contrasting consistency and compensation. Participants (N ≈ 245) completed measures of ideological beliefs, perceived control, and action construal. Reliability analyses indicated modest internal consistency for Action Identification (α = .53) and low reliability for Locus of Control (α = .32). The six moral scenarios showed very low reliability (α = .11), indicating they captured diverse judgment domains. Binary logistic regressions revealed that political orientation, particularly its social dimension—was the strongest and most context-dependent predictor of moral choice. Economic …

Background: Oral stents may reduce toxicities during radiation therapy for head and neck cancer (HNC). Customized 3D-printed oral stents offer faster production and achieve comparable patient-reported outcomes to conventionally fabricated stents. However, their design process remains time-consuming, lacks standardization, and relies heavily on skilled technicians. We hypothesized that semi-automating the design process for 3D-printed, mouth-opening, tongue-depressing (MOTD) stents could standardize the design workflow and decrease design time.
Methods: Using oral stent design principles established over decades by oral oncologists, we created a customized computer program (Autostent) using MATLAB to semi-automate the design process of MOTD stents. We subsequently compared Autostent …

B lymphocytes play major adaptive immune roles, producing antibodies and driving T cell responses. However, how immunometabolism networks support B cell activation and differentiation in response to distinct receptor stimuli remains incompletely understood. To gain insights, we systematically investigated acute primary human B cell transcriptional, translational, and metabolomic responses to B cell receptor (BCR), TLR9, CD40-ligand (CD40L), IL-4, or combinations thereof. T cell-independent BCR/TLR9 costimulation, which drives malignant and autoimmune B cell states, highly induced transaminase branched chain amino acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1), which localized to lysosomal membranes to support branched chain amino acid synthesis and mTORC1 activation. BCAT1 inhibition …

Introduction Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading global cause of mortality, with hypertension (HT) being a significant contributor, responsible for 56% of CVD-related deaths. Masked hypertension (MHT), a condition where patients exhibit normotensive blood pressure (BP) in clinical settings but elevated BP in out-of-clinic measurements, poses an elevated risk for cardiovascular complications and often goes undiagnosed. Current diagnostic methods, such as ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) and home BP monitoring (HBPM), have limitations in feasibility and accessibility. Methods This study aimed to address these challenges by leveraging machine learning (ML) models to predict MHT based on clinical data from a single …

Numerous research efforts have used paleoecological data to reconstruct past biodiversity in Europe. In these projects, researchers have identified increases in biodiversity over the Holocene and hinted at a positive correlation with human population. These are important findings but are not easily translated into effective biodiversity conservation and restoration policy. We argue that, in order to better inform policymaking, studies of past biodiversity dynamics should include analyses of contemporaneous cultural phenomena in order to identify and describe specific anthropogenic drivers of past biodiversity changes. We present an example here, a case study from the Lake Constance region (southwestern Germany), one …

Water-Based Logic: The Water Heritage Of Greater Nanning And Its Role In Urban Authenticity, Tiansheng Li
Water-Based Logic: The Water Heritage Of Greater Nanning And Its Role In Urban Authenticity, Tiansheng Li
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Water heritage plays a pivotal role in establishing Greater Nanning as a central city in the upper Pearl River basin of southern China. However, this heritage has largely been overlooked due to an urban narrative dominated by land-centrism. This article explores methods to create a comprehensive understanding of the water heritage of Greater Nanning and discusses how it can be integrated into the concept of urban authenticity. It argues that both tangible and intangible water heritages are essential elements to safeguard urban authenticity and promote sustainable cultural development. This study adopts an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, combining quantitative analysis with …

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with risk heightened in premenopausal women with obesity or use estrogen-based oral contraceptives. When both risk factors are present, the thrombosis risk increases substantially. Protein S (PS), an essential anticoagulant cofactor, is downregulated by both estrogen and obesity, but the molecular basis for this suppression remains poorly defined. We investigated the effect of estrogen and obesity on PS expression using plasma samples from 157 women stratified by BMI and contraceptive use, alongside 40 mice categorized as lean or obese with or without estrogen pellet treatment. The levels of PS …

Background: Critically ill children tend to receive fluid volumes exceeding physiologic requirements despite evidence demonstrating harm with increasing net positive fluid balance. However, interventions aimed at optimizing fluid balance have yet to demonstrate significant clinical benefit, likely because there are multiple drivers of this complex problem. In this study, we used qualitative inquiry to describe the current practice at a community pediatric intensive care unit and discover potential barriers and facilitators to clinical practice change.
Methods: We designed a semi-structured interview guide informed by the consolidated framework in implementation research (CFIR) and conducted interviews with attending physicians, dietitians, nurses, nurse …

Background: Diagnosing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains challenging, particularly in older adults. While the Heart Failure Association (HFA)-PEFF and H2FPEF Scores offer structured diagnostic approaches, their clinical utility is still debated. This study aims to compare the diagnostic accuracy of HFpEF Scores versus inclusion criteria used in sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) trials, age-adjusted N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) thresholds and the universal definition of heart failure (HF).
Methods: Diagnostic tools were assessed using sex-weighted and age-weighted propensity score adjustment in individuals aged 60-80 years from two established HFpEF cohorts (MEtabolic Road to DIAstolic Heart Failure (MEDIA), …

BACKGROUND: Healthcare team communication is essential to high-quality childhood cancer care, especially during high-acuity events such as clinical deterioration and in resource-variable settings, where supportive interventions to resolve deterioration are less available. Communication quality has traditionally been understudied in these settings, and there is a notable lack of communication interventions that are appropriate and feasible in settings across resource levels. We propose addressing this challenge in this study protocol, which will co-develop and pilot a multi-level intervention to improve communication and outcomes for children receiving cancer treatment.
METHODS/DESIGN: This study leverages systems and implementation science methodologies to evaluate and improve …

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) can alleviate symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) refractory to conventional therapies. Overstimulation, however, can elicit pathological behaviors marked by disinhibition and recklessness.
Observations: Two patients with OCD underwent DBS of the VC/VS region and met responder status within 1 month of stimulation onset, as evidenced by a ≥ 35% reduction in their Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale score. Notably, both patients exhibited signs of disinhibited behavior soon after DBS activation, including gambling, sleep disruption, and interpersonal relationship volatility. Through careful management, responder status persisted stably beyond the transient period of …

The rock wettability is one of the most critical parameters that influences rock storage potential, trapping, and H2 withdrawal rate during Underground hydrogen storage (UHS). However, the existing review articles on wettability of H2-brine-rock systems do not provide detailed information on complexities introduced by reservoir wettability influencing parameters, such as high pressure, temperature, salinity conditions, micro-biotic effects, cushion gases, and organic acids relevant to subsurface environments. Therefore, a comprehensive review of existing research on various parameters influencing rock wettability during UHS and residual trapping of H2 was conducted in this study. Literature that provides insight into molecular-level interaction through machine …

This study critically examines discourse and the ways it shapes identities and community belonging for self-identifying Afro-Latina, second-generation-immigrant women in South Florida. This qualitative research uses an intercultural communication framework to analyze interviews and collected poems. Informed by grounded theory and a Black feminist critical approach rooted in the intersectionality theory, the data is analyzed through comparative thematic and metaphorical rhetorical analyses. When discussing the discourses related to the development of ethno-racial identities for Afro-Latinas, certain communicative patterns of self-discovering, self-defining, and self-envisioning emerged. With regard to community belonging, three metaphorical discourses arose: not-enoughness, in-betweenness, and un-humanness. The internalization of …

Alaska has the highest incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in the United States, with 8% mortality while undergoing TB treatment. With a quarter of TB cases lacking sputum culture to enable drug resistance testing, FreezeTB aimed to develop tools tailored to meet the challenges in Alaska while being translatable to other settings. We designed a rapid and cost-effective laboratory workflow and software to identify drug-resistant mutations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS). FreezeTB, a Fast, Reliable, Economical Evaluation tool to Zap Endemic Tuberculosis, amplifies 22 gene loci associated with resistance to 16 anti-tuberculosis drugs. M. tuberculosis isolates from Alaska …

Research participants should be informed of genetic test results that could impact their health, particularly when they have expressed interest in receiving such information. Furthermore, the return of genetic test results is essential to improve trust, transparency, and health equity. However, investigators often encounter barriers in returning genetic test results to research participants. We examined genomic research at a large, research-intensive medical school and found less than 6% of protocols included plans to return results to participants. This study describes our development of protocols for returning primary and secondary genetic test results and implementation of a Genomic Return of Results …

Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) is a heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein primarily known for its alternative splicing activity. It shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm via partially overlapping N-terminal nuclear localization (NLS) and export (NES) signals. Despite its fundamental role in cell growth and differentiation, its involvement in human disease remains poorly understood. We identified 27 individuals from 25 families harboring de novo or inherited pathogenic variants - predominantly start-loss (89%) and, to a lesser extent, missense (11%) - affecting NES/NLS motifs. Affected individuals presented with a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder and variable skeletal dysplasia with disproportionate short stature with short limbs. …

Word grounding tasks aim to associate individual words withcorresponding elements in visual scenes, enabling machines to link language with perception for effective human–machine interaction. However, existing grounding models struggle to generalize to synonyms or unseenlexical variants, limiting their performance in open-domain scenarios. Inthis paper, we present a Bayesian multimodal grounding model that incorporates word embeddings as priors within a probabilistic generativeprocess to improve robustness under lexical variation. We compare theeffects of static FastText and contextual BERT embeddings on grounding accuracy by conditioning word–visual associations on their semanticrepresentations. Experiments use CLEVR-generated 3D scenes pairedwith structured compositional descriptions to test the grounding of …
