Optimizing Artificial Neural Networks For Smart Grid Stability Analysis Using Tabu Search-Based Hyperparameter Tuning, Salwa Khalid Abdulateef, Armaneesa Naaman Hasoon, Moceheb Lazam Shuwandy
Baghdad Science Journal
Smart grids are supposed to make electricity networks more reliable, yet in practice their behavior can be surprisingly unstable when the load changes too quickly. During this work, we tried to understand that instability and to build a model that predicts when a grid remains stable or begins to drift. We used an Artificial Neural Network and tuned it with a Tabu Search routine that keeps adjusting the number of neurons and the activation functions until the results stop improving. It was not a single run; several training attempts were needed before the model settled. After applying the Tabu optimization, …

Glacial systems entrain and transfer sediment, rich in essential nutrients, from continental sources to the ocean, where they are released by meltwater. In the Southern Ocean, primary producers are limited by the availability of micronutrients, like iron (Fe), so any increase in continental sediment supply could enhance primary productivity and subsequent drawdown of atmospheric CO2. Here we provide a systematic account of labile Fe concentrations in Antarctic continental sediments. Ferrihydrite and crystalline Fe (oxyhydr)oxides were extracted from 27 Antarctic samples collected from nunataks, lateral moraines and blue ice areas in the Sør Rondane Mountains, East Antarctica. We report …

Population Dynamics, Host Range, And Impact Of The Naturalized Weevil Ochyromera Ligustri: A Potential Biological Control Agent Of Invasive Ligustrum Sinense, Brandi H. Misiaszek
LSU Master's Theses
Invasive woody plants have become dominant components of many forest understories in the southeastern United States. These species can displace native species, disrupt ecosystem processes, and reduce biodiversity. Chinese privet (Oleaceae: Ligustrum sinense Lour.) is an invasive shrub distributed through the Southeastern United States. The ligustrum weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Ochyromera ligustri Warner) is a non-native insect that was first found in the U.S. on Ligustrum in 1959. This weevil is considered a potential fortuitous biological control agent of invasive Ligustrum spp. in the U.S. The objectives of this study were to evaluate O. ligustri as a potential biological control agent …
Node-Attributed Spatial Graph Partitioning: A Kullback-Leibler Divergence Based Approach, Valentin Nechita
Node-Attributed Spatial Graph Partitioning: A Kullback-Leibler Divergence Based Approach, Valentin Nechita
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a novel approach to node-attributed spatial graph partitioning (NSGP) that addresses limitations in existing homogeneity measures. We introduce a Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence-based formulation we name KLD that measures attribute similarity by comparing each node’s distribution to its subgraph centroid, providing a computationally efficient method of measuring homogeneity. Integrated within a multilevel graph partitioning framework and Fiduccia-Mattheyses refinement, our approach achieves approximately 90% runtime reduction compared to the baseline Clustering and Local Refinement (CLR) algorithm while maintaining comparable partition quality. Applied to COVID-19 infection data combined with American Community Survey demographics across U.S. FIPS codes, KLD successfully identifies …

Investigating The Mechanisms Of Microbial Interactions Using A Model Cystic Fibrosis Polymicrobial Community, Bassam El Hafi
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Cystic fibrosis (CF) airway microbial communities are complex ecosystems where interspecies interactions influence pathogen survival and disease progression. We leverage a CF-relevant in vitro four-species model composed of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Prevotella melaninogenica, alongside a microbiome dataset with over 4,000 respiratory samples from publicly available sequencing data of CF patient samples, to explore the dynamics of microbial interactions in CF. On a broader scale, we performed microbial network analysis to examine how the latest modulator therapy, elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI), might influence CF microbial communities. Our analysis revealed a reduction in node connections and …
Cultural Synthesis In Iranian Graphic Design: A Fusion Of Tradition And Modernity, Maryam Mehrabadi
Cultural Synthesis In Iranian Graphic Design: A Fusion Of Tradition And Modernity, Maryam Mehrabadi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis examines Iranian graphic design as a politically embedded and semiotically charged field wherein visual form operates as a site of ideological negotiation, cultural memory, and symbolic resistance. Focusing on the works of Ghobad Shiva and Morteza Momayez, the study situates graphic design within the sociopolitical constraints of the Pahlavi monarchy and the post-1979 Islamic Republic. It argues that Iranian design practices cannot be understood outside the country’s enduring identity crisis—shaped by the unresolved tension between three coexisting cultural strata: ancient Persian heritage, Islamic civilizational identity, and Western modernity. Drawing on the work of Edward Said, the thesis also …

Electric-vehicle (EV) charging is a localized, time-varying load that challenges distribution networks. This study offers practical insights into when spatial graph structure adds value beyond temporal context, utilizing real-world data and a transparent evaluation. We compare Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) models for hourly EV-charging energy forecasting, based on 145,778 sessions recorded in Boulder, Colorado (2018–2023). After preprocessing and temporal alignment, temporal covariates (hour, day, month, year) and, when applicable, ZIP-code indicators were engineered. LSTMs were trained with 1 h and 24 h input windows, with or without ZIP features, and evaluated through 5-fold cross-validation. GCNs …

Calcium carbonate precipitation in ageing ocean crust sequesters carbon dioxide dissolved in seawater through seafloor weathering reactions, influencing atmospheric CO2 concentrations on million-year timescales. However, this crustal carbon sink, and the extent it balances CO2 degassing during crustal formation at mid-ocean ridges, remain poorly quantified due to limited sampling of the vast ridge flanks where CO2 uptake continues for millions of years. Here we quantify the carbon sink hosted within talus breccias that accumulated through mass wasting 61 million years ago during rift faulting at the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge, cored during International Ocean Discovery Program South Atlantic Transect Expedition …

Bladder prolapse, also known as cystocoele, is the most common form of pelvic organ prolapse (POP), significantly affecting women's physical, sexual, and psychosocial health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite its widespread prevalence and disabling consequences, bladder prolapse remains under-recognised and inadequately addressed in global health strategies. Prevalence estimates vary widely across regions, from 3%-64.6%, influenced by diagnostic methods and cultural reporting biases. Common risk factors include high parity, early childbirth, prolonged labour, poor postpartum care, malnutrition, obesity, and ageing. Clinical diagnosis often relies on simplified grading systems in resource-limited settings. Conservative treatments like pelvic floor muscle training …

Low-Energy Multiphoton Scattering At Tree-Level And One-Loop Order In A Homogeneous Electromagnetic Field, James Edwards, Ivan Ahumada Hernandez, Patrick Copinger
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We study low energy photons coupled to scalar and spinor matter in the presence of an arbitrary homogeneous electromagnetic field in a first-quantized (worldline) approach. Utilizing a Fock-Schwinger gauge for both the scattering photons and homogeneous background, simple compact expressions are found for both the photon- and background-dressed effective action and propagator in scalar and spinor quantum electrodynamics. The low-energy limit allows identification of the coupling of the scattering photons as one of an effective homogeneous superposition of their field strengths, with amplitudes following from application of a suitable linearization operator. To treat the linearization, several techniques are employed, including …

Heart failure is a complex condition caused by various etiologies that reduce cardiac output or increase cardiac pressures. It is classified by left ventricular ejection fraction, a key prognostic factor. New therapies, devices, and better management of secondary causes have improved outcomes. A recently identified group-those with heart failure and improved ejection fraction-shows better prognosis. This review explores its definition, causes, clinical significance, and management strategies.

Between Sovereignty And Commons: Legal Frameworks For Digital Data Governance In India, Anushka Sachan
Journal of Law and Public Policy
This legislative note critically examines the Indian Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, with a focus on its provisions that imply data sovereignty and their implications for the governance of digital commons. Drawing on the seminal works on data commons, the note explores the conceptual and practical tensions between centralised data sovereignty, participatory, and decentralised models of data stewardship. While data sovereignty is often justified on grounds of national security and control, it may inadvertently hinder the development of inclusive and accountable frameworks for managing data as a public good.

Revisiting The Meaning Of 'Forests'—In Re: T.N. Godavarman Thirumulpad V Uoi, Gayathri D. Naik
Journal of Law and Public Policy
This Case Comment reflects on the contributions of the judiciary to forest governance and management through the use of continuous mandamus in the landmark case T.N. Godavarman v UoI. It offers insights into these contributions, particularly an expansion of the understanding of ‘forests’, by examining the latest judicial decision in the Godavarman series, which was on the protection of sacred groves in Rajasthan. The expansion of the definition of ‘forests’ to include sacred groves can help accord the protection and ensure the preservation of these small forest lands with rich biodiversity and religious and cultural significance.

The semi-annual oscillation (SAO) dominates seasonal variability in the equatorial stratosphere and mesosphere. However, the seasonally dependent modulation of the SAO in the stratosphere (SSAO) and mesosphere (MSAO) by sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) in the Arctic has not been investigated in detail. In this study, we examine the seasonal evolution of the SAO during 16 major SSW events spanning 2004 to 2024 using the Japanese Atmospheric General Circulation Model for Upper Atmosphere Research Data Assimilation System Whole Neutral Atmosphere Re-analysis (JAWARA). Basic features of the SAO are well captured by JAWARA, as evidenced by the SSAO and MSAO appearing at …

Exploring The Recognition Of Internalizing Problems Among Black Students: Delving Into The Youth Mental Health Help-Seeking Pathway, Marketta A. Adams
Exploring The Recognition Of Internalizing Problems Among Black Students: Delving Into The Youth Mental Health Help-Seeking Pathway, Marketta A. Adams
LSU Master's Theses
The mental health of Black adolescents is a growing concern, with high prevalence rates of internalizing disorders such as anxiety and depression. National studies report that nearly 47% of Black adolescents experience a mental health disorder by age 18, with over 60% reporting moderate to severe depressive symptomology. Despite these alarming rates, Black youth underutilize mental health services, often due to cultural stigma, limited access to culturally competent care, and under-recognition of their mental health needs. This study aimed to explore problem recognition as a key component in the mental health help-seeking pathway for Black adolescents in school settings. Grounded …

Analysis Of The Submergence, Landing, And Navigation Of An Autonomous Underwater Landing Vehicle, Theresa Wainwright
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous Underwater Landing Vehicles allow for seafloor data to be taken in multiple locations with little to no human intervention. The movement of these vehicles needs to be analyzed through simulated to ensure the correct programming of vehicle missions. This analysis includes the surface navigation, the drift experienced by the vehicle during descent, and the seafloor stability of the vehicle. The results then inform the limitations of this vehicle and the necessary adjustments to subsequent versions. Surface navigation allows understanding of vehicle movement between ascent locations, waypoints, and descent locations. Drift during descent allows for visual of the vehicle’s movements …
