Assessing The Hurricane Inland Wind Exposure Along The U.S. Coastal States, Naomi Von Bose
Assessing The Hurricane Inland Wind Exposure Along The U.S. Coastal States, Naomi Von Bose
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most destructive U.S. natural hazards, and recent storms show that damaging winds and flooding often extend far inland. This study examines inland TC wind exposure across coastal states from Texas to North Carolina using HURDAT2 data (1900–2024). Following Zhu et al. (2023), an exponential decay interpolation model and an Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) framework were applied to capture continuous variations in intensity and duration. Results show that TC winds can persist hundreds of kilometers inland, with States experiencing ACE levels comparable to some coastal counties. Incorporating storm structure through the radius of maximum …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Most patients present at advanced stages, and the effectiveness of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors is constrained by limited patient response. A subset of HCC shows elevated expression of the promoter 2 ("P2")-driven hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4α) isoform, which directly transcriptionally represses the circadian brain and muscle ARNT-like protein 1 (BMAL1) transcription factor. This subtype of HCC is robustly inhibited by the plant-based flavonoid nobiletin (NOB), a circadian-fortifying compound. Using patient-matched human HCC and serum, we show that BMAL1-deficient HCC shows exaggerated carnitine palmitoyl transferase …

Background: Previous studies have reported excellent disease control and survival in patients with well-lateralized, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC)-7 T1-2N2b tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The reduced treatment volume is associated with lower rates of physician-assessed toxicity. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have been proposed as a similarly reliable measure, but the body of literature is limited for unilaterally treated patients. Our goal was to review PROs of such patients who had reduced treatment volumes.
Methods: We reviewed PROs of patients with AJCC-7 T1-2N2b disease treated with ipsilateral radiation therapy (RT), with or without surgery or chemotherapy before RT. PROs were …

While neuronal activity is essential for brain function, it also poses threats to neuronal integrity. Here, we show that activity-induced expression of stimulated by retinoic acid gene 8 (Stra8) protects neurons from degeneration. Previously considered germline specific, Stra8 is expressed in the adult mouse brain and is induced by neuronal activity via calcium influx and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor signaling. Neuron-specific Stra8 knockout mice display hallmark features of neurodegeneration, including DNA damage, impaired proteostasis, inflammation, nuclear envelope erosion, reduced dendritic plasticity, memory deficits, and heightened excitotoxic vulnerability. Electrophysiological studies reveal disrupted inhibitory circuit function. Mechanistically, Stra8 binds regulatory regions of neuromodulator …

DNA polymerase theta (Pol θ)-mediated end joining (TMEJ) initiates DNA double-strand break repair by using short homologies (microhomologies) between single-stranded DNA tails. This repair process is particularly important in cancer cells defective in homologous recombination. The exonuclease function of DNA polymerase delta (Pol δ) has been identified as an essential component for TMEJ, functioning to remove unpaired bases flanking a microhomology (MH). It is not known if the exonuclease removes all unpaired bases at once and how this removal might affect subsequent MH selection. Here, we reconstituted a functional TMEJ repair process using purified human Pol θ and Pol δ. …

Background: Post-stroke spasticity limits motor recovery and independence. Combining botulinum toxin type-A (BoNT-A) injection with intensive, task-specific robot-assisted therapy (RAT) might enhance neuroplasticity and functional gains, but its additive effect and optimal timing are uncertain. (
Methods: We systematically searched major medical databases and trial registries up to April 2025 for randomized controlled trials in adults with post-stroke spasticity comparing botulinum toxin type-A injection plus RAT with toxin injection plus conventional therapy, or RAT alone with RAT combined with toxin injection. Risk of bias was assessed using the RoB 2 tool, and findings were synthesized narratively.
Results: Seven trials ( …
An Intelligent Vision System For Metal Surface Defect Detection, Sida Zhang
An Intelligent Vision System For Metal Surface Defect Detection, Sida Zhang
Dissertations (1934 -)
With the continuous growth in the need for artificial intelligence driven manufacturing, automatic detection of metal surface quality has become a key issue in forging production. Traditional manual detection methods are not only inefficient and subjective but also have low accuracy when analyzing workpieces with complex surfaces and diverse colors. To solve this problem, this dissertation proposes two methods for metal surface defect detection and classification. This dissertation begins with the background of forging and summarizes existing literature on industrial vision systems and surface defect detection methods. Basic image processing techniques, machine learning algorithms, and deep learning foundations—including artificial neural …
Improving Dynamic Balance And Gait Adaptation With Ischemic Conditioning Post-Stroke, Stephanie Christine Wolfe
Improving Dynamic Balance And Gait Adaptation With Ischemic Conditioning Post-Stroke, Stephanie Christine Wolfe
Dissertations (1934 -)
The purpose of this dissertation was to quantify the benefits of ischemic conditioning on reactive balance responses and gait adaptation during treadmill walking in chronic stroke survivors. Reactive balance and gait adaptations are believed to be limited in this population. Ischemic conditioning is an emerging adjunct to physical therapy that improves motor function post-stroke via improvements in strength, voluntary muscle activation, walking speed, and fatigability. Here, we quantified how ischemic conditioning could impact performance of a more complex task: altering gait to meet various perturbing conditions. Specifically, we quantified mediolateral margin of stability in response to lateral cable pulls (both …

Michigan Tech Publications
To identify novel peptides with potential antiviral activities, a database search was performed based on the primary sequence of the peptide I24 (CLAFYACFC), the effective part of the antiviral peptide TAT-I24 consisting of peptide I24 and the cell penetrating TAT-peptide (amino-acids 48–60, GRKKRRQRRRPPQ). A Protein BLAST search identified several sequences with high similarity to I24 in diverse proteins, some of which are known to be involved in the interaction with nucleic acids. Selected sequences and newly designed variants of I24 were synthesized as TAT fusion peptides and tested for antiviral activity in two well-established models: baculovirus transduction of HEK293 cells …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Slope to basin carbonate successions, ranging in age from the Cenomanian to the Paleocene, are exposed in the Geyik Dağı area that is part of the Anamas-Akseki autochthon (Geyik Dağı unit) cropping out in western Central Taurides (southern Türkiye). Biochronostratigraphic and sedimentologic features of the successions have been recently described from 3 stratigraphic sections. They are structurally separated into 2 successions. The lower succession is unconformably overlain by Eocene turbiditic sandstones. The upper succession is in a tectonic sheet between the Eocene sandstones and the Aladağ unit. Stratigraphic bases of the successions are not exposed in the study area. The …

Deformation Conditions And Quantifying Strain In The Chai-Kour Shear Zone In The Zagros Orogenic Belt Of Iran, Saeede Keshavarz, Saeed Zarei, Majid Shahpasandzadeh, Soumyajit Mukherjee
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Strain analyses and kinematic studies in orogenic belts are essential for understanding their deformation mechanisms. The Chai-Kour brittle-ductile shear zone is located in the central Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic belt, southeast of the Zagros orogen. The present study analyzes deformed mylonitic rocks to clarify the deformation kinematics, temperature, and strain geometry of the Chai-Kour shear zone. Previously developed kinematic shear indicators such as S-C shear bands, deformed porphyroclasts, asymmetric boudins, and folds provide an overall top-to-the-southeast sense of shear in the Chai-Kour shear zone. Quartz micro-thermometry confirms that the Chai-Kour rocks were initially affected by a high-temperature (550–650 °C) deformation that was …

Conulariids From The Late Serpukhovian (Late Mississippian) Carbonate Deposits Of Ne Europe, Andrey Vladimirovich Zhuravlev, Andrey Vladimirovich Erofeevsky, Yadviga Alfredovna Vevel
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Late Mississippian (late Serpukhovian) conulariids are described from the deep carbonate platform facies of the northern Cis-Urals. The fossil assemblage also includes brachiopods, foraminifers, ostracods, conodonts, Sphenothallus (?), crinoids, and rare bryozoan and fish remains. Conulariid remains are represented by isolated rods and articulated thecae of Paraconularia aff. subulata (Hall). A carbon isotope study suggests that the conulariids were low-level consumers, likely feeding on seston.

Impact Of Adaptive Filtering-Based Noise Reduction On The Quality Of F-C Images In Masw, Doğukan Durdağ
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study investigates the effects of adaptive filtering, based on the least mean square algorithm, on the quality of multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) data and frequency-phase velocity (f-c) images. Specifically, the adaptive filtering method aims to decrease the noise and improve the determination of fundamental modes in f-c images. Both sample and field seismic data with varying noise levels were evaluated using adaptive filtering, resulting in significant improvements in f-c image quality. The filtered data displayed a wider frequency range of f-c images, and reduced noise compared to the original noisy data. Based on these findings, adaptive filtering …

A Feature-Free Deep Learning Approach For Midair Hand Gesture Recognition From Surface Electromyogram (Semg) Data, Yasir Altaf, Abdul Wahid, Mudasir Manzoor Kirmani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Midair hand gesture recognition plays a crucial role in applications such as sign language recognition and human-computer interaction, particularly for supporting individuals with partial or complete hearing loss. However, recognizing gestures in midair remains challenging due to the rapid and complex nature of hand movements. To address this, noninvasive techniques like surface electromyography (sEMG)—which captures muscle activity through sensors placed on the skin—have gained attention. sEMG provides rich time-series data that reflect both spatial and temporal muscle dynamics. In this study, we propose a deep learning architecture that combines convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to classify …

Spoken digit recognition (SDR), a type of supervised automatic speech recognition, is essential for various human-machine interaction applications, including banking operations, dialing systems, price extraction, and airline reservation systems. However, designing an effective SDR system presents several challenges, such as developing labeled audio data, selecting appropriate feature extraction methods, and creating high-performance models. To overcome these challenges, a novel approach for robust spoken digit recognition using an integrated log spectrogram convolutional neural network (ILS-CNN) has been proposed. The proposed work presents an efficient SDR method by taking advantage of a log spectrogram layer directly within the neural network to enhance …

This paper looks back at my professional career as a teacher and as a critic in the last fifty years. In hindsight, it was intertwined with the specificities of our history and culture. It began in the context of increasing criticism of the dominance of Western writing vis-à-vis Philippine writing, and of the interrogation of the role of literature in a dysfunctional society. The anticolonial thrust shaped the kind of teaching and scholarly activities I engaged in: the study of vernacular literature, women’s writings, Philippine popular culture, and the translation of Tagalog works for a broader readership.
