Celiac disease etiopathogenesis requires genetic predisposition and exposure to gluten, yet these factors alone are not sufficient. Larger longitudinal studies are needed to determine the role of time-varying infections and gut microorganisms. The aim was to design a celiac disease case-cohort longitudinal study using The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study. By age 3-years, persistent tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies (tTGA), i.e., celiac disease autoimmunity (CDA), was confirmed in 704 of the 6132 genetically at-risk TEDDY children. Celiac disease onset (CD-onset) was defined as the age CDA developed when followed by a biopsy-proven diagnosis. A competing risk analysis on …

Loss-of-function mutations in methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) cause Rett syndrome. While we know that MeCP2 binds to methylated cytosines on DNA, the full breadth of the molecular mechanisms by which MeCP2 regulates gene expression remains incompletely understood. Here, using a genetic modifier screen, we identify the super elongation complex, a P-TEFb–containing elongation factor that releases promoter-proximally paused RNA polymerase II, as a genetic interactor of MECP2. MeCP2 physically interacts with SEC subunits and directly binds AFF4, the scaffold of the SEC, via the transcriptional repression domain. Furthermore, MeCP2 facilitates the binding of AFF4 on a subset …

Glycoprotein hormones (GpHs) produced in the human pituitary act through receptors (GpHRs) in the gonads to support reproduction and in the thyroid for metabolism. GpHs are heterodimeric cystine-knot proteins; their receptors bind cognate hormones at an extracellular domain and signal through a transmembrane domain to heterotrimeric G proteins. GpHs and GpHRs have co-evolved from invertebrate counterparts. Structures of the human receptors as isolated for cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) are all monomeric despite compelling evidence for their functioning as dimers. Here we characterize the homologous receptor from Caenorhabditis elegans. Its biochemical properties are notably similar to those of the thyroid stimulating …

Risk Exposure And Stakeholder Oversight In College Sports: Lessons From A Lightning Incident, John J. Miller Dr., Jason W. Lee Dr., Elizabeth A. Gregg, Jeffrey F. Levine

The COSMA Journal

The management of collegiate athletic events increasingly demands systematic approaches to risk identification, assessment, and mitigation, yet risk management education within athletics remains inconsistent. As a result, athletic directors, coaches, and facility managers frequently lack the formal preparation necessary to design and implement effective risk management policies, thereby exposing institutions to operational disruption and legal liability. Severe weather events, particularly lightning storms, underscore the importance of integrating legal principles such as duty of care, premises liability, and foreseeability into institutional planning. This case study, based on a real-life incident, shows that athletic administrators, often with limited formal training in risk …

A Forensic Logging Framework For Llms, Giannis Tziakouris, Elio Biasiotto Nov 2025

A Forensic Logging Framework For Llms, Giannis Tziakouris, Elio Biasiotto

Defensive Publications Series

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly embedded in enterprise, operational, and security-sensitive workflows. These include automated coding assistants, knowledge management systems, and multi-agent orchestration platforms where LLMs act as intermediaries between users and external tools. While significant research has been directed toward preventive safeguards such as input filtering, refusal mechanisms, and adversarial robustness, far less attention has been paid to forensic readiness. When incidents occur, ranging from malicious prompt injections to unauthorized tool usage or exfiltration of sensitive data, existing LLM implementations fail to provide investigators with reliable records for reconstruction, containment, or attribution.

To address this deficiency, a comprehensive …

Enhancement Of Aeration And Activated Sludge Processes Using Micronanobubbles For Efficient Wastewater Treatment, Marwa Ahmed Abdelhamid Nov 2025

Enhancement Of Aeration And Activated Sludge Processes Using Micronanobubbles For Efficient Wastewater Treatment, Marwa Ahmed Abdelhamid

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Aeration is considered one of the most reliable and efficient processes in wastewater treatment. However, conventional aeration systems show low performance with respect to the gas transfer during the treatment process. This poses a challenge in maintaining sufficient dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations essential for the treatment. The use of micronanobubbles (MNBs) in the aeration process has been proposed as effective tool in water and wastewater treatment owing to their stability and longevity. MNBs’ stability is a distinctive property resulting from several mechanisms, including the repulsion force due to charged surfaces that helps bubbles to resist coalescence/bursting. MNBs’ longevity is represented …

Tube-to-tubesheet joints, an integral component of shell and tube heat exchangers, are known for their vulnerability to leakage problems at the joint region due to mechanical and chemical factors coupled with fabrication techniques involved in creating these joints. An ideal condition of manufacturing process parameters and geometrical variables required to produce tube-to-tubesheet joints is highly desired. One of the most promising candidate materials to fabricate tube-to-tubesheet joints is titanium or titanium alloys due to their excellent strength and resistance to corrosion. The present study investigates the structural integrity of three categories of Titanium Grade 2 based tube-to-tubesheet joints comprising of …

Development And Experimental Validation Of A Bio-Based Co2 Purification Medium Derived From Puffed Rice Waste For Indoor Air Quality Improvement, Abeer Fuad Othman Nov 2025

Development And Experimental Validation Of A Bio-Based Co2 Purification Medium Derived From Puffed Rice Waste For Indoor Air Quality Improvement, Abeer Fuad Othman

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Indoor environments are crucial for human activity, as people spend over 90% of their time indoors. This extensive indoor presence makes these spaces crucial for overall well-being. The growing awareness of Indoor Air Quality's (IAQ) impact on health, productivity, and wellness contrasts with buildings' contributions to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through construction materials such as exterior walls, upper floors, and interior finishes. Classrooms are especially concerning because they house many students who are exposed to indoor air pollutants for extended periods. Given the significance of IAQ in educational settings, there is an urgent need for effective solutions to improve air …

Urban Form, Density, And Energy Efficiency: A Typo-Morphology-Based Simulation Framework For Superblock Planning And Densification In Abu Dhabi, Najeeba Ali Kunju Nov 2025

Urban Form, Density, And Energy Efficiency: A Typo-Morphology-Based Simulation Framework For Superblock Planning And Densification In Abu Dhabi, Najeeba Ali Kunju

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Urban form plays a critical role in shaping environmental performance, particularly building energy. In Abu Dhabi and other GCC cities, development is structured around superblocks—large arterial-bounded land parcels units derived from NPU planning principles. Rapid urban expansion, rising energy demand, and the predominance of low-density suburban growth (now exceeding 55% of Abu Dhabi’s footprint) highlight the need for frameworks that can evaluate the energy implications of this morphology and guide both new development and retrofitting strategies. Superblocks therefore offer a consistent and policy-relevant scale for analysing form–energy interactions in the GCC’s hot-desert context, where early-stage, morphology-informed planning tools are essential. …
