Introduction: Healthy Longevity Medicine (HLM) offers a strategy to reduce the healthspan-lifespan gap, yet public perspectives remain unclear. This study refines the Healthy Longevity (HELO) framework through a qualitative exploration of public views towards lifespan, healthspan, and HLM.Methods: Individuals living in Singapore participated in semi-structured group or individual discussions to explore (a) their understanding of lifespan and healthspan, (b) motivational factors for health behaviours, and (c) their awareness of HLM. Sampling maximised variation across age, sex, and ethnicity. Data obtained through 13 discussions were analysed with a mixed, inductive-deductive approach employing the HELO framework. Results: Thirty-six participants (mean age = 49.4 …

Assembling Diasporic Faith Amidst China’S Rise: (De)Territorialization And The Multi-Scalar Production Of The Guangze Zunwang Cult In The Chinese Diaspora, Ningning Chen, Orlando Woods
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Faith in the Chinese diaspora has become increasingly vibrant in the context of China’s rise as a global power. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic research exploring the temple networks of the Guangze Zunwang cult, this paper advances an assemblage approach to understanding diasporic faith and investigating its multi-scalar becoming by exploring three areas of inquiry. The first investigates the evolving development of the Guangze Zunwang cult and its formation into a faith assemblage based on temple alliances, which bring people, deities, institutions, places and material objects together across (national) borders. The second explores the multi-scalar becoming in which faith assemblages are …

Global sustainable finance policies are premised on publicly listed companies driving decarbonization through transparency, investor pressure, and capital market access. Analysing c. 20,000 corporate owners of renewable and fossil-fuel assets worldwide, we show the opposite: private firms own approximately 75% of global renewable generation capacity. This private dominance holds across all major technologies and regions, with listed ownership of renewable assets being the majority only in the oil & gas and technology sectors. The Paris Agreement did not alter this balance. Instead, ownership of the energy transition reflects countries' financial structures, with similar patterns observed across manufacturing, construction, and financial …

The Pluralistic Natural Capital Values Of A Tropical City, Adrienne Gret-Regamey, Et Al.
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Nature in cities is essential for human well-being. Quantifying and valuing the goods and services provided by nature to city dwellers is missing in tropical contexts. Yet, as cities worldwide face similar challenges, understanding the services provided by tropical urban ecosystems becomes imperative for effective management. Here, we present the first Natural Capital Assessment of a tropical city, unveiling three critical insights. Firstly, we demonstrate the vital reliance of a developed tropical city on nature, particularly for climate change mitigation through regulating services. Secondly, we identify intact natural areas as Singapore’s most valuable assets, stressing the significance of the quality …

Lack of reliable diagnostics for the presence, type and severity of infection in patients presenting to emergency departments with non-specific symptoms poses considerable challenges. We developed TriVerity, which uses isothermal amplification of 29 mRNAs and machine learning algorithms on the Myrna instrument to determine likelihoods of bacterial infection, viral infection and need for critical care interventions within 7 days. To validate TriVerity, the SEPSIS-SHIELD study enrolled 1,222 patients with clinically adjudicated infection status and need for critical care intervention within 7 days as endpoints. The TriVerity Bacterial and Viral scores had higher accuracy than C-reactive protein, procalcitonin or white blood …

Equitable, timely, and evidence-based care remains a central goal across health care ecosystems, yet significant quality gaps, care variability, and health disparities persist. Professional societies, including the American Heart Association, have long developed clinical practice guidelines to provide standardized, evidence-based recommendations across the cardiovascular care continuum. These guidelines are operationalized into quality measures to monitor care, identify gaps, and guide improvement. Professional societies, agencies, and health systems have applied implementation science strategies, such as education, data sharing, and evaluation, to improve care quality and achieve quality measures defined in the clinical practice guidelines. American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines …

BACKGROUND: Pediatric pulmonic and aortic valve insufficiency has recently been treated with novel procedures that use autologous right atrial appendage tissue. Whether atrial tissue's tensile strength correlates with pressures it can withstand to function as a neo-semilunar valve has not been studied. We therefore studied these properties using an ex vivo porcine heart model.
METHODS: Aortic cusps, pulmonic cusps, and right and left atrial appendage tissues were excised from 10 porcine hearts. Native leaflets and atrial appendage samples underwent circumferential and radial stretching by a uniaxial tensile machine. Right atrial appendage tissue from 14 additional porcine hearts was used to …

Growing work highlights the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in graduate medical education. Few studies have employed participatory research approaches to solicit trainee perspectives related to DEI. Our goal was to utilize group concept mapping (GCM), a mixed-methods participatory research approach, to describe resident perspectives on DEI within a large pediatric residency program. To organize and represent their perspectives on DEI, trainees completed brainstorming, sorting/rating, and interpretation activities in accordance with GCM methodology. Activities occurred via two synchronous discussion sessions (brainstorming and interpretation) and an electronic survey (sorting/rating). Items from the brainstorming session were sorted (i.e. grouped …

Improving Early Detection Of Suicidal Ideation Through Routine Screening In Adults With General Anxiety Disorder, Brittanie N. Bush
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, with anxiety and depression recognized as independent risk factors for suicidal ideation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024 September 26; Grant et al., 2023; Li et al., 2022; Moon et al., 2025; Wiebengo et al., 2021). Incorporating valid screening tools like the General Anxiety Disorder-7 and the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale can help identify suicidal ideation early, enabling quicker provider intervention (Johnson et al., 2019; O’Connor et al., 2022). The purpose of this project was to implement the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale as a standardized screening tool for …

Enhancing Adherence To Veterans Affairs/Department Of Defense And American Psychiatric Association Clinical Guidelines For Alcohol Use Disorder, Corinna M. Trevino
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Alcohol use disorder continues to be significantly undertreated within outpatient behavioral health settings, particularly concerning pharmacological interventions. Despite the presence of robust national clinical guidelines recommending medications such as naltrexone for individuals with moderate to severe dependence, the rates of prescribing these medications remain modest owing to inconsistent screening procedures, limited referral practices, and provider follow-through barriers. This project was implemented at a substance use treatment center in a large metropolitan area to improve adherence to clinical practice guidelines. The purpose of this project was to increase prescribing of naltrexone and improve referral for patients with moderate to severe alcohol …

Leukemia-associated RhoGEF (LARG) is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) known for its specificity toward Ras homolog family member A (RhoA). LARG plays a crucial regulatory role in various cellular processes such as migration, proliferation, invasion, and metastasis by facilitating the exchange of GDP to GTP on RhoA. Phosphorylation of LARG at S1288 by ribosomal S6 kinase 2 (RSK2) promotes RhoA activation. However, the precise mechanism remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate the essential role and mechanism by which S1288 phosphorylation facilitates LARG-mediated invasiveness in response to epidermal growth factor (EGF). Upon EGF stimulation, RSK2 phosphorylates LARG at S1288, thereby promoting …

Vincent De Paul And The Reform Of The Clergy, John E. Rybolt C.M.
Vincentian Studies
Vincent de Paul was an important reformer of the French Church, which faced several problems with its clergy. Liturgical practices were not standardized, and some priests lived corrupt lives. Because they received stipends for masses, they often celebrated them for that reason rather than out of piety. They tried to acquire several benefices (church offices) and dioceses at the same time to profit from them all, although this was against canon law, and these were sometimes essentially sold or hoarded by noble families. Church titles and their accompanying incomes were also auctioned off by monasteries, and these, too, were purchased …

Three Additional Texts From Felix De Andreis, John E. Rybolt C.M.
Vincentian Studies
Three texts add to our knowledge of the work of Felix De Andreis (1778–1820), the founding superior of the Congregation of the Mission in the United States. These have recently come to light. Two are originals, and the third is a copy. They are given in the original languages and in English, with introduction and commentary. The first is an “Indian grammar” with the Lord’s Prayer and catechism by Felix De Andreis, written circa 1817. According to David J. Costa, a scholar in Native American linguistics, it “provide[s] us with the only source of data that is clearly transitional between …

Coming To The American Vincentian Mission In 1818: The Second Journey, John E. Rybolt C.M.
Vincentian Studies
Three letters from Francesco Cellini, a Vincentian novice, and his confrere, Filippo Borgna, a Vincentian student with vows, are given or summarized here. In 1818, Cellini and Borgna made an eighty-eight-day voyage from Livorno, Italy, to the United States. Cellini wrote an account to a friend in Rome, and Borgna largely copied this in his letter, perhaps to ensure that one of their texts would survive the trip back to Italy. These are the only known detailed records of the Vincentians’ second journey to the US and reinforce records kept by Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, who came two …

Louis William Valentine Dubourg: His First Years As Bishop Of Louisiana, John E. Rybolt C.M.
Vincentian Studies
Louis William Valentine Dubourg, a priest of the Society of Saint Sulpice, invited the Vincentians to establish a seminary for his diocese of Louisiana. Part of his fundraising efforts to support these and other works was this booklet, The Notice sur l’état actuel de la Mission de la Louisiane (Notice Concerning the Current State of the Mission of Louisiana). Printed in 1820, it circulated widely in Europe and was corrected, updated, and reprinted twice in 1822. Transcriptions given here illuminate differences between the editions. The booklet’s author is anonymous but is probably Charles de la Croix, the bishop’s secretary. The …

The Supreme Court heard argument on Monday in Trump v. Slaughter, a case in which the President seeks to override the power of Congress to limit, through legislation, presidential removal of federal administrators. The argument revealed some confusion about the law and history of federal offices and multiple precedents important to resolving the question. This post examines mistakes and misreadings with respect to: the design of the Federal Reserve System; the meaning of a fixed term; and the Court’s decisions in Marbury v. Madison, Ex Parte Hennen, and Parsons v. United States.
A Deep Learning And Causal Modeling System For Retinal Disease Diagnosis, Shiyu Tian
A Deep Learning And Causal Modeling System For Retinal Disease Diagnosis, Shiyu Tian
Dissertations (1934 -)
Vision-threatening retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME), are major causes of preventable blindness worldwide. Early screening and follow-up are essential, but advanced imaging like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is expensive and not always available outside large clinics. In contrast, color fundus photography is inexpensive and common, yet it only shows a surface view and can miss subtle changes inside the retina. These practical limits make it hard to deliver timely, high-quality eye care in many settings. As AI is increasingly used in healthcare, retinal disease diagnosis has benefited as well. This work combines deep …

Using a novel dataset on Twitter activity as well as a novel corpus of law journal publications, this paper examines the impact of social media activity on the scholarly success of U.S. law professors. We find that joining Twitter increases citation counts by an average of 22% per year and improves article placements by up to 10 ranks for law professors, relative to a synthetic control group. These positive returns apply across nearly all classes of scholars and are magnified for those who post frequently about their own work. The identified citation boost would be even larger than 22% if …
The Value Of Jury Rights, Philip A. Hamburger
The Value Of Jury Rights, Philip A. Hamburger

The right to a civil jury trial is often dismissed as an inefficient anachronism ill suited to the complexities of modern litigation, and these efficiency concerns have long overshadowed any serious defense of the Seventh Amendment. This Article argues that such skepticism profoundly misunderstands the constitutional function and enduring value of civil jury rights. The Article observes that the Seventh Amendment’s jury right was adopted with the understanding that it would come with some inefficiencies and that contemporary concerns about its inefficiencies tend to be overstated. Ultimately, the Article finds that civil juries are essential for structural reasons such as …

The Federal Reserve established an array of innovative emergency lending facilities during the Great Financial Crisis and expanded the scope of its emergency lending yet further in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. This Article provides a retrospective of how the Federal Reserve used its emergency lending authority across these two episodes, identifying patterns and revealing some differences. It sheds light on the conditions that enabled the Federal Reserve to establish the facilities that it did, including the roles played by Congress and Treasury in providing the equity funding that made certain facilities possible. It shows how in each episode, the …

You can scribble an agreement on a napkin or hire lawyers to negotiate a hundred-page contract. Either way, most of your contractual obligations will not be in your document. They will be in the background rules contract law applies absent your express agreement. Justifying these defaults is a core task of contract theory; getting them right is a core task of contract law.
This Article introduces the autonomy default paradigm, a conceptually coherent and normatively attractive account of contract law defaults. We show that defaults are justified to the extent they enhance our autonomy, understood as self-determination. They vindicate our …

In the standard story taught in typical Parents, Children, and the State or Children & the Law courses, analysis of parental rights has a clear beginning. In 1923, at the height of the Lochner era, in Meyer v. Nebraska, a case of first impression, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that “[w]ithout doubt” the Due Process Clause protected the right “to marry [and] establish a home and bring up children.” Two years later, in Pierce v. Society of Sisters, the Court recognized “the liberty of parents and guardians to direct the upbringing and education of children under their control.” …

OBJECTIVES: Right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery conduits are a mainstay of treatment for patients with congenital heart defects. We investigated the association of underlying genetic abnormalities with conduit failure and hypothesized that 22q11.2 deletion syndrome was associated with shorter time to failure.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Patients who underwent right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery conduit placement as part of a biventricular repair at 0 to 24 months of age between January 2010 and June 2020 were included. The primary exposure of interest was diagnosis of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, and the outcome was time to …

BACKGROUND: Current myocardial arterial spin labeling (ASL) methods are sensitive to noise (background and physiology), which limits the accuracy of myocardial blood flow (MBF) measurement. In this study, we demonstrated a new deep learning-enabled myocardial ASL approach (DeepMASL) and evaluated its accuracy to quantify MBF in a canine model of coronary arterial disease in vivo. The reference method was invasive microsphere measurements.
METHODS: Eighteen mongrel dogs were divided into two groups: healthy (n = 9) and coronary stenosis (n = 9). The latter was induced in an open-chest model with 3 types of stenosis: 50% (n= 3), 70% (n = …

Annual mass drug administration (MDA) is currently recommended for the local elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF). Modeling studies of LF transmission suggest that conducting MDA twice a year could accelerate LF elimination. To test this idea, we compared the effects of 3 rounds of yearly MDA and 5 rounds of semiannual MDA using diethylcarbamazine with albendazole on LF infection measures in Papua New Guinea (PNG) across 2 treatment areas with high LF prevalence. From 2013 to 2018, we conducted 4 annual community surveys at 4 sentinel sites in each treatment area. We sampled 2,854 people at the start and 2,746, …
