(Wp 2025-06) Ramsey And Keynes...And Sraffa And Wittgenstein: Change In Interwar Cambridge Economics And Policy, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

The Ramsey-Keynes exchange regarding the nature of probability is investigated in connection with the development of interwar Cambridge economics and Ramsey and Sraffa’s influences on Keynes and Wittgenstein. First discussed are Ramsey’s criticisms of Keynes and Wittgenstein; then Sraffa’s criticisms of Marshall and Wittgenstein. Ramsey was influenced by Peirce and pragmatism and Sraffa by Gramsci and the theory of cultural hegemony. Ramsey died in 1930 but Sraffa continued to interact with both Keynes and Wittgenstein. After his critique of Marshall he participated in the ‘Cambridge circus’ and turned to recovering the Classical economics of Ricardo. Keynes’s General Theory statement of …

Learning-Based Strategic Monitoring In Prospective Memory, Madeline R. Valdez Dec 2025

Learning-Based Strategic Monitoring In Prospective Memory, Madeline R. Valdez

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Existing research shows that individuals monitor for prospective memory (PM) targets strategically by heightening monitoring in relevant contexts where PM targets are likely to occur, and relaxing monitoring in irrelevant contexts where PM targets are unlikely to occur. To date, the study of strategic monitoring has been done in paradigms in which participants receive explicit contextual information to help guide their monitoring. Extending this work, the present study aimed to investigate whether individuals can strategically monitor based on a learned contextual cue, a process termed learning-based strategic monitoring. Using cost to ongoing, lexical decision task (LDT) performance as a metric …

Incentives Influence Congruency Pre-Cue Utilization In The Stroop Task, Christopher O. Nuno Dec 2025

Incentives Influence Congruency Pre-Cue Utilization In The Stroop Task, Christopher O. Nuno

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Prior work using 4-choice conflict tasks has shown that pre-cues signaling the congruency of the following trial tend to produce robust pre-cue benefits (i.e., faster RTs relative to uninformative pre-cues) for congruent but not incongruent trials. The scarcity of evidence for pre-cue benefits on incongruent trials raises the question of whether people can adjust cognitive control on demand, given that incongruent trials uniquely require participants to enact an abstract control setting to ignore the goal irrelevant feature and focus on the goal relevant feature when presented with the pre-cue. One potential explanation is that participants are not sufficiently motivated to …

The Unilateral Neuromuscular Effects Of Cross Education Eccentric-Focused Isokinetic Strength Training With Blood Flow Restriction In Sedentary And Recreationally Active Males, Bryan Mixumi

Theses and Dissertations

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if BFR unilateral training protocols can elicit the same or greater cross-education effect as observed with HIGH protocols.

RESULTS: Significant time main effects and trained vs. untrained interactions revealed both training groups improved in isometric and isokinetic strength, work and power across limbs (P < 0.05). EMG analyses showed significant increases in vastus lateralis activation, with limb-specific neural adaptations but no group differences (P < 0.05) suggesting potential cross-education influence in the lower musculature.

CONCLUSION: With lower workloads, the BFR training protocols produced improvements in isometrics and isokinetic strength, work, power, and EMG that were comparable to those of the HIGH group across the trained and untrained limbs. The magnitude and limb-specific patterns varied across isometric, isokinetic, and EMG variables, but …

Modern Water And Sediment Transport Patterns In Alluvial Ridge Basins Of The Rio Grande Delta, South Texas, Usa, Waqid Nabi

Theses and Dissertations

Alluvial ridge (AR) basins are shallow, marine-influenced depressions within river deltas, yet their flow and sediment dynamics remain poorly understood. This study examines hydrodynamics and sediment transport patterns in the Bahia Grande Complex, which are AR basins of the Rio Grande Delta, using tilt current meters, water-level and turbidity loggers, and suspended and bed-sediment sampling. The AR basins function as wind-dominated, microtidal environments, where pre-existing basin geometry and hydrodynamic forcings control water flow and sediment distribution patterns. Seasonal wind patterns and storms modulate water levels and flow connectivity. Substrate patterns reflect frequent resuspension in the shallow northern basin, maintaining coarse …

Prediction Of Geometric Deviation In Additively Manufactured Tpms Lattice Structures Using Non-Destructive Evaluation And Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks, Prateek Neupane

Theses

Metal 3D printing has emerged as a widely used additive manufacturing method, finding applications across numerous industries and research areas. However, its application is often hindered by geometric inaccuracies and surface quality issues resulting from the complex interplay of laser power, melt pool behavior, and cooling characteristics. These inconsistencies have a significant impact on the design and functionality of printed parts, affecting structural integrity and dimensional accuracy. Thus, an effective data-driven approach is crucial to predict these deviations before manufacturing. This study proposes a methodology that incorporates Non-destructive evaluation techniques, like in-situ monitoring and X-ray CT scan, with Conditional Generative …

Relationship Between Semi-Aquatic Mammal Occupancy And Particulate Carbon, Nitrogen, And Phosphorus Dynamics In Freshwater Ecosystems, Madison H. Stokoski Dec 2025

Relationship Between Semi-Aquatic Mammal Occupancy And Particulate Carbon, Nitrogen, And Phosphorus Dynamics In Freshwater Ecosystems, Madison H. Stokoski

Theses

Semi-aquatic mammals such as beavers (Castor canadensis) and muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) can influence carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics in freshwater systems. While the effect of beavers, in particular, are typically attributed to their dam and lodge building behaviors, these animals do not always build these structures. It’s possible that other, non-damming behaviors (e.g. foraging and burrowing) may influence the availability of nutrients as well. To assess this possibility, we surveyed 54 lentic and lotic waterbodies across Southern Illinois and investigated the possibility that beaver and muskrat occupancy improved our ability to explain variation in nutrient availability across …
