As data center development accelerates in the western U.S, there are growing concerns about impacts to land, water, and air. This is especially true in rural communities, where development is rapidly increasing and communities have fewer resources. Broadly, data centers increasingly face vocal opposition from siting communities, who are concerned about water use, energy demand, and air quality. However, the impacts of data centers are highly context specific and localized, depending on regional energy availability, cooling technologies, and, increasingly, state-specific regulations.

Grounded in an asset-based approach to educational transformation, this education and policy brief presents an exploratory inquiry into Black Multilingual Learners (BMLs) in California, recognizing the intersection of their racial, linguistic, and cultural identities. The inquiry draws on statewide demographic and English language proficiency data, relevant research, student and educator bright spots, and the Young, Bilingual and Black in California Survey of local educational agency representatives. Three key findings emerged: Visibility Gaps in state reporting systems, an Intersectional Data Gap caused by the absence of disaggregated racial data on public-facing data platforms, and an Infrastructure Gap in local data collection …

ECU-MALNETT (ECU MALware NETwork Traffic) is a real world, reproducible dataset of labeled benign and malicious network flows built from the Peekaboo execution corpus. Peekaboo runs evasive malware with dynamic binary instrumentation and records raw host-level PCAPs while granting full Internet access, yielding noisy, real-world captures with background OS activity and concurrent processes. To derive trustworthy labels from these traces, we apply Construct, a baseline aware, zero-trust labeling framework. Construct first ingests a baseline capture to establish reference sets (DNS qnames, HTTP hosts, TLS SNIs, and socket endpoints) and grows a conservative benign IP pool only via whitelisted DNS resolutions. …

Methodological Optimization Of Microplastic Visualization For The Comparison Of Eastern Oysters Cultivated In Traditional Plastic Or Novel Non-Plastic Aquaculture Farm Gear, Mikayla Straube

Microplastics (< 5 mm) are a pervasive physical pollutant. This study was predominately focused on the development and utilization of fluorescence microscopy to locate and identify microplastics and other particles in the presence of a background autofluorescing biogenic precipitate. Oyster digest samples are visualized with fluorescent microscopy using Nile Red (NR). Photobleaching, or concentrated light exposure, of the filters was tested to determine if it can quench the autofluorescence signal. It was found that photobleaching significantly decreased autofluorescence intensity of the biogenic precipitate in emission wavelengths 518, 580, and 670 nm even with the application of NR, while minimally impacting the fluorescence behavior when bound to plastic particles. In application, fluorescence microscopy still yields some gaps in microplastic identification  when compared to Raman spectral results. This methodology was broadly developed to be able to quantify ambient microplastic quantities in farmed oyster samples. The specific level of aquaculture’s contribution to plastic pollution in global waterways is difficult to estimate. The methodology was applied to a local case study that compared microplastic loading in cultured eastern oysters raised in traditional plastic farm gear and novel plastic-free farm gear. Marginal trends in the gear type treatment and microparticles identified across the harvest season were identified, however effect sizes were too weak, and evidence was too inconsistent to currently suggest that gear type and harvest date affect microplastics and other particle quantities g^-1 oyster tissue (d.w.).

The increasing incidence of aerosol-related pulmonary diseases has intensified the need for efficient fibrous filtration technologies capable of capturing ultrafine particles with low pressure drop. Although nonwoven fibrous filters are widely used in medical, industrial, and ventilation systems, their complex internal structures and multiscale transport mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This review examines the theoretical foundations of aerosol filtration, including single-fiber capture mechanisms and the concept of the most penetrating particle size. In addition, electrostatic interactions, including charge generation, transport, and stability, are incorporated to extend conventional mechanical filtration frameworks. Reliable personnel detection is critical for the safe deployment of autonomous haulage systems in underground mining, where challenging environmental conditions demand robust real-time perception. Existing research has focused primarily on fine-tuned convolutional detectors, while systematic comparisons with zero-shot vision-language models remain limited. This study presents a cross-paradigm benchmark comparing four zero-shot vision-language models (YOLO-World, Grounding DINO, OWL-ViT, and OWLv2) with four fine-tuned YOLO detectors (YOLOv8s, YOLOv9s, YOLO11s, and YOLO26s) using 31,396 real-world underground coal mine images. PHE incidents account for a substantial percentage of mining-related fatalities, often resulting from vehicle collisions, equipment rollovers, operator errors, and blind-spot hazards. Despite the industry's efforts to improve safety protocols, fatal accidents involving haulage trucks remain persistent. The rapid deployment of autonomous haulage systems (AHSs) in open-pit mining has significantly altered haul road geometric design requirements, as autonomous trucks operate under strict kinematic constraints related to turning radius, gradient, and braking performance. Since haulage accounts for 50–60% of total mining costs, optimizing haul road geometry is critical for improving operational efficiency, energy consumption, and safety. BACKGROUND: Slower chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression allows more time for transplant preparation. Whether differences in CKD progression by race/ethnicity associate with preemptive or living donor transplantation in youth has not been well studied.

METHODS: We examined the association between time spent with low eGFR (between 10-30 mL/min/1.73 m²) and odds of preemptive or living donor transplantation among youth with CKD. eGFR was estimated using the bedside Schwartz (if < 18 years) and CKD-EPI 2021 equations (if ≥ 18 years) and the CKiD U25 equation in sensitivity analysis. Time spent with low eGFR was compared by race/ethnicity.

RESULTS: Among 333 youth with CKD (median age 11 years [IQR 7,14]), median time spent with low eGFR was 28.8 months. 77% were preemptively waitlisted, and 45% received preemptive …

BACKGROUND: The 2023 US Anaphylaxis Practice Parameter indicated that some patients receiving epinephrine in the community might avoid emergency department (ED) visits; however, the criteria and safety of this approach remain unproven.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV), bullous pemphigoid, and paraneoplastic pemphigus are autoimmune blistering diseases carrying significant mortality risk and economic burden. Diagnosis is frequently delayed in acute care settings, where these conditions mimic common dermatoses such as cellulitis, aphthous stomatitis, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis. While emergency departments appropriately triage and admit severely affected patients, definitive diagnosis is often delayed across the acute care continuum, averaging 6 to 12 months from symptom onset. These delays result in repeated visits, inappropriate therapies, and avoidable hospitalizations. Pemphigus vulgaris hospitalization costs average $14,500 per patient annually in the United States, and cellulitis misdiagnosis alone generates …
