Reflections In The Mirror: An Examination Of Racially Congruent Mentoring Of Black Teacher Candidates In A Teacher Education Program, Mary Louise Gregory Dec 2025

Reflections In The Mirror: An Examination Of Racially Congruent Mentoring Of Black Teacher Candidates In A Teacher Education Program, Mary Louise Gregory

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

The high demand for Black educators in K-12 schools across the United States has caused several teacher training programs to rethink how they prepare Black teacher candidates for the teaching workforce (Andrews et al., 2019; Blazar, 2024; Milner & Howard, 2004). Improving teacher candidate training, especially for Black teacher candidates can boost K-12 Black teacher representation. Literature on Black teacher candidate’s experiences while being mentored identifies several challenges that include issues with implicit bias, microaggressions, stereotyping and other occurrences of racial discrimination (Daly et al., 2024; Hampton et al., 2008; Kardos & Johnson-Moore, 2010; Rodriguez et al., 2020). The process …

The Paradox Of Discipline: Equity, Standardization, And Black Student Outcomes In Public Schools, Latricia T. Davenport Dec 2025

The Paradox Of Discipline: Equity, Standardization, And Black Student Outcomes In Public Schools, Latricia T. Davenport

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Despite efforts to address profound discipline disparities impacting Black students, the implementation of alternative disciplinary approaches like Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Justice (RJ) has failed to eliminate significant disproportionality in school discipline. This study investigates how teachers navigate the challenges of disciplining Black students within a paradoxical school environment that juxtaposes equitable, human-centered methods with a historically rooted managerial paradigm emphasizing uniformity and zero tolerance. Drawing upon systemic racism and the concept of 'apprenticeship of observation,' this study explores how teachers' implicit biases about Black students are formed by long-held institutional norms and personal experiences. It …

Who Gets To Lead? Policy, Systemic Barriers, And Leadership Norms In Education, Kathryn A. Cirilli Dec 2025

Who Gets To Lead? Policy, Systemic Barriers, And Leadership Norms In Education, Kathryn A. Cirilli

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

This phenomenological qualitative study investigated the underrepresentation of women and racially marginalized individuals in the superintendent position, the highest leadership position within K-12 public education. The superintendent position has been overwhelmingly represented by males, even though women were the majority of the teaching workforce. Grounded by institutional theory and viewed through a phenomenological lens, I examined how organizational norms, hiring practices, and access to mentorship contributed to and upheld systemic barriers to the superintendent position. Through exploring the interpreted lived experiences of current female superintendents across public school districts that reflected the national patterns, this research addressed the disparities in …

Next-Generation Terrorism: Understanding Agentic Ai Systems And Potential For Malign Use, Alexis D'Amato, Ares Boira-Lopez, Emma Theobald, Meg Shercliffe, Jack Rygg, Samuel Hunter, Joel Elson

Reports, Projects, and Research

The call for an increased understanding of artificial intelligence in the U.S. AI Action Plan (The White House, 2025), in tandem with the growing use of AI by terrorist organizations (see Theobald et al., 2025), motivates our effort to provide clarity around the emerging technologies. In doing so, we define and distinguish the features of agentic AI and provide several case studies to illustrate the nefarious use of these tools. Although the current base rate for this type of use is low, we forecast hypothetical use cases given previous examples of terrorists adopting technology and outline the malign use of …

A Longitudinal And Multimodal Simulation-Based Curriculum Improved Internal Medicine Residents' Confidence In Procedures, Point-Of-Care Ultrasound, And Clinical Decision-Making., Sarah Grebennikov, Aisha Imam, Megan Kang, Aimee E Willett, Brad Gable, Sanjay Patel

Medical Education Articles

Introduction Internal medicine training has historically relied on classroom-based lectures, typically delivered through morning and noon conferences, which offer broad content coverage but limited experiential learning. Simulation-based education improves resident confidence, procedural ability, and clinical reasoning; yet it is often delivered in brief, standalone activities that lack longitudinal structure or integration within the broader curriculum. Few programs have a longitudinal simulation curriculum that spans the academic year and incorporates multiple modalities and topics. We developed a novel simulation-based curriculum intentionally integrated into the existing resident academic schedule to provide structured hands-on learning across multiple domains. Sessions focused on procedural and …

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

The green-synthesized silver-titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO2) nanocomposite was successfully produced in this study by the synergistic effects of the Cassia siamea leaf extract. In the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, the absorbance improved when the nanoparticle was incorporated into TiO2. The energy gap of the composite reduced as the absorbance increased. Numerous functional groups in the formation of NP were detected by FTIR, and their possible role in NP formation was suggested. The synthesized nanoparticles and nanocomposites were found to be crystalline with X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) studies. The average crystallite size of the nanoparticle was 3.95 nm compared to nanocomposite …

Lemurs are often cited as an example of adaptive radiation, as more than 100 extant species have evolved and filled ecological niches on Madagascar. However, recent work suggests that lemurs lack a hallmark of other adaptive radiations: explosive speciation rates that decline over time. Thus, characterizing the tempo and mode of evolution in lemurs can reveal alternative ways that hyperdiverse clades arise over time, which might differ from traditional models. We explore lemur evolution using a phylogenomic dataset with broad taxonomic sampling that includes the lorisiforms of Asia and continental Africa. Our analyses reveal multiple bursts of diversification (without subsequent …

Machine Learning-Based Detection Of Covert Data Exfiltration Via Electromagnetic Side-Channel Emissions From Computer Memory In Air-Gapped Systems, Oladapo Akintoye Ajike Dec 2025

Machine Learning-Based Detection Of Covert Data Exfiltration Via Electromagnetic Side-Channel Emissions From Computer Memory In Air-Gapped Systems, Oladapo Akintoye Ajike

All Theses

Air-gapped computer systems are physically isolated from unsecured networks. Though isolated, they remain vulnerable to covert data exfiltration via electromagnetic side channels and other covert-channel attacks. This research presents a comprehensive approach to detecting electromagnetic data exfiltration by establishing a controlled laboratory environment using low-cost, readily available hardware components. The study shows a proof-of-concept covert data transmission system that exploits electromagnetic emissions from computer memory access patterns through software-controlled Random Access Memory (RAM) operations.

The research methodology involved developing a C++ transmitter program that modulates CPU and memory-intensive operations to generate detectable electromagnetic signals at 100 MHz frequency, and implementing …

Carbon Sequestration And Greenhouse Gas Emission Dynamics Of Forage Sorghum Cultivars In Southern Texas, Kusalika Madushani Kularathna

All Theses

Carbon sequestration is one of the major strategies for removing atmospheric carbon dioxide and fixing it in the soil and plants. The research study focused on the carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas dynamics of three different forage sorghum cultivars: Sugar Graze Ultra (annual), PSH20TX01 (perennial seeded), and PSH09TX15 (perennial rhizomes), in Southern Texas, where each cultivar had nine plots. The field study was conducted over two growing seasons, in 2024 and 2025, at the Prairie View A&M University research farm. Three different fertilizer rates, recommended, half-recommended, and zero fertilizer rates, were applied. Soil greenhouse gas emissions were measured using a …

Integrating Semi-Supervised Learning And Ensemble Deep Learning For Low-Resource Deep Knowledge Tracing, Uchechukwu Melody Okechukwu Dec 2025

Integrating Semi-Supervised Learning And Ensemble Deep Learning For Low-Resource Deep Knowledge Tracing, Uchechukwu Melody Okechukwu

All Theses

As learning platforms scale, two obstacles prevent Deep Knowledge Tracing (DKT) from thriving in practice: the scarcity of labeled interactions and the opacity of predictions. We introduced a semi-supervised, ensemble DKT pipeline that trains diverse architectures, including Knowledge Proficiency Tracing (KPT), Exercise-Correlated KPT (EKPT), and Dynamic Key-Value Memory Networks (DKVMN) on a mixture of limited labeled and abundant unlabeled learner interactions, then aggregates predictions via majority voting to stabilize learning and reduce variance. Evaluated on benchmark datasets such as ASSISTments, the combined approach yields consistent gains in AUC, accuracy, and precision over strong supervised baselines while revealing influential interactions, surfacing …

Modeling And Control Of Spring-Mass Systems With Switched Dynamics Using Reservoir Computing, Osemudiamen Andrew Ihimekpen Dec 2025

Modeling And Control Of Spring-Mass Systems With Switched Dynamics Using Reservoir Computing, Osemudiamen Andrew Ihimekpen

All Theses

Hybrid spring-mass systems with dynamic state switching present significant challenges for modeling and control due to their complex nonlinear dynamics and discrete state transitions. In this research, a novel reservoir computing framework based on echo-state networks (ESNs) was proposed to model and control spring-mass systems with two distinct states: F1 (without air friction) and F2 (with air friction). The system switched between states based on velocity thresholds, creating a complex, hybrid dynamic that required sophisticated modeling approaches. The proposed method enabled efficient learning of spatiotemporal patterns in hybrid dynamics, offering accurate system identification and robust control capabilities.

The framework was …

Utilization Of Mushroom Stems As A Feed Resource For Sustainable Poultry Production, Kayla Stamps Dec 2025

Utilization Of Mushroom Stems As A Feed Resource For Sustainable Poultry Production, Kayla Stamps

All Theses

Soybean meal (SBM) is the primary protein source in poultry diets; however, its escalating cost and the environmental impact of soybean cultivation underscore the need for sustainable alternatives. Mushroom stems are generated at large volumes as agricultural waste, yet contain bioactive compounds and essential nutrients that may benefit poultry health and productivity. Despite these attributes, limited research has evaluated their potential as feed ingredients across different poultry species. This study addressed this gap by investigating whether mushroom stem powder can partially replace SBM in poultry diets while improving performance, health, and environmental outcomes.

Specifically, four experiments were conducted to evaluate …

Integrating Gis And Machine Learning To Uncover Spatial, Temporal, And Contributing Factors To Bicycle Crashes, Precious Kamsiyo Ejikeme

All Theses

The recent drive for a cleaner environment has led to an increase in greener modes of transportation, including the use of bicycles. These emerging trends have led to an increase in bicycle-related crashes. According to the CDC, an estimated 1,150 cyclists were killed in 2023, with 120,000 sustaining non-fatal injuries. Transportation planners and agencies are under pressure to make cycling safer by providing dedicated bike lanes and improving existing infrastructure. To accomplish this, it is very important to understand which factors contribute to bicycle crash severity across different roadways.

Despite recent advancements in modeling bicycle crash severity, most studies rely …

Willingness To Receive Medication For Opioid Use Disorder (Moud), Hannah K. Knudsen, Maria Rockett, Carrie B. Oser

Sociology Faculty Publications

Background: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD, i.e., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) save lives, but many individuals are unwilling to receive MOUD treatment. Few longitudinal studies have examined whether social network support for MOUD is related to willingness to receive MOUD. Methods: Egocentric network data were collected from 393 adults with OUD who were incarcerated in 14 Kentucky prisons; follow-up data were collected about six months post-release. For each named alter, participants (egos) reported on perceived alters’ support for buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone at baseline and follow-up; baseline network scores were averaged into a network support for MOUD score and a …

Bias Testing And Mitigation In Llm-Based Code Generation, Dong Huang, Jie M. Zhang, Qingwen Bu, Xiaofei Xie, Junjie Chen, Heming Cui

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As the adoption of LLMs becomes more widespread in software coding ecosystems, a pressing issue has emerged: does the generated code contain social bias and unfairness, such as those related to age, gender, and race? This issue concerns the integrity, fairness, and ethical foundation of software applications that depend on the code generated by these models but are underexplored in the literature. This paper presents a novel bias testing framework that is specifically designed for code generation tasks. Based on this framework, we conduct an extensive empirical study on the biases in code generated by five widely studied LLMs (i.e., …

Data-Driven Mechanism Design: Jointly Eliciting Preferences And Information, Dirk Bergemann, Marek Bojko, Paul Dutting, Renato Paes Leme, Haifeng Xu, Song Zuo

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study mechanism design in environments where agents have private preferences and private information about a common payoff-relevant state. In such settings with multi-dimensional types, standard mechanisms fail to implement efficient allocations. We address this limitation by proposing data-driven mechanisms that condition transfers on additional post-allocation information, modeled as an estimator of the payoff-relevant state. Our mechanisms extend the classic Vickrey–Clarke–Groves framework. We show they achieve exact implementation in posterior equilibrium when the state is fully revealed or utilities are affine in an unbiased estimator. With a consistent estimator, they achieve approximate implementation that converges to exact implementation as the …

Multidimensional Sorting: Comparative Statics, Joe Boerma, Andrea Ottolini, Aleh Tsyvinski

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In sorting literature, comparative statics for multidimensional assignment models with general output functions and input distributions is an important open question. We provide a complete theory of comparative statics for technological change in general multidimensional assignment models. Our main result is that any technological change is uniquely decomposed into two distinct components. The first component (gradient) gives a characterization of changes in marginal earnings through a Poisson equation. The second component (divergence-free) gives a characterization of labor reallocation. For U.S. data, we quantify equilibrium responses in sorting and earnings with respect to cognitive skill-biased technological change.

Drivers Of Racial Differences In C-Sections, Adriana Corredor-Waldron, Janet Currie, Molly Schnell Dec 2025

Drivers Of Racial Differences In C-Sections, Adriana Corredor-Waldron, Janet Currie, Molly Schnell

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Black mothers with a trial of labor are 25 percent more likely to deliver by C-section than non-Hispanic White mothers. The gap is largest among mothers with the lowest risk and is reduced by only one-fifth when controlling for observed medical risk factors, sociodemographic characteristics, hospital, and physician or medical practice group. Remarkably, the gap disappears when performing a C-section is more costly due to a concurrent pre-labor C-section limiting surgical resources. This finding is consistent with provider discretion—rather than differences in unobserved medical risk—accounting for persistent racial disparities in delivery method. The additional intrapartum C-sections that occur among low-risk …

Vincent De Paul And The Reform Of The Clergy, John E. Rybolt C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul was an important reformer of the French Church, which faced several problems with its clergy. Liturgical practices were not standardized, and some priests lived corrupt lives. Because they received stipends for masses, they often celebrated them for that reason rather than out of piety. They tried to acquire several benefices (church offices) and dioceses at the same time to profit from them all, although this was against canon law, and these were sometimes essentially sold or hoarded by noble families. Church titles and their accompanying incomes were also auctioned off by monasteries, and these, too, were purchased …

Coming To The American Vincentian Mission In 1818: The Second Journey, John E. Rybolt C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Three letters from Francesco Cellini, a Vincentian novice, and his confrere, Filippo Borgna, a Vincentian student with vows, are given or summarized here. In 1818, Cellini and Borgna made an eighty-eight-day voyage from Livorno, Italy, to the United States. Cellini wrote an account to a friend in Rome, and Borgna largely copied this in his letter, perhaps to ensure that one of their texts would survive the trip back to Italy. These are the only known detailed records of the Vincentians’ second journey to the US and reinforce records kept by Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, who came two …
