Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) has three main variants; polyaminated (hLCN2) and non-polyaminated (C87A and R81E). The polyaminated form is proposed to positively influence energy control, whereas the non-polyaminated forms negatively impact energy control in mice. Glucocorticoids negatively affect glucose regulation and exercise has a positive effect. We hypothesise that glucocorticoids will suppress, while exercise will increase hLCN2, and decrease C87A and R81E, which will be associated with improved insulin sensitivity. In a randomised crossover design, nine young healthy men (aged 27.8 ± 4.9 years; BMI 24.4 ± 2.4 kg/m2) completed 30 min of high-intensity aerobic exercise (90–95% heart rate reserve) after glucocorticoid …

The Supreme Court Of India's Use Of Inherent Power Under Article 142 Of The Constitution: An Empirical Study, M. P. Ram Mohan, Sriram Prasad, Vijay V. Venkitesh, Sai Muralidhar, Jacob P Alex
National Law School of India Review
The Constitution of India under Article 142 grants the Supreme Court of India broad inherent powers to do complete justice. The contours of these inherent powers and what it means to achieve complete justice were left to the Supreme Court to determine on its own. In this paper, we empirically examine all the Supreme Court cases from its inception in 1950 till 2023 which use the term “Article 142” or “complete justice.” We found 1579 cases, which were then hand-coded for many variables such as the nature of the case, where the case was appealed from, the temporal distribution, the …

The vast expansion of data center campuses has created concentrated and highly dynamic electrical loads that challenge traditional transmission system planning and protection studies. This paper presents a novel approach to model the load of data centers and validate their dynamic performance in a composite-load-model (CMLD) framework.
The data center has three major modules: a static element representing the static devices and busway impedance; an electronic-based element constituting power converters such as rectifiers and inverters, associated power supplies, and a motor-based element encompassing the induction nature of chillers, fans and pumps. Each module represented equivalent algebraic and differential equations depicting …

Institutional Isomorphism, Top Management Commitment, And Environmental Disclosure In Tanzania’S Construction Sector, Aulelius Lema, Siasa Issa Mzenzi
Business Management Review
This study examined the influence of institutional isomorphism on environmental disclosure (ED) in Tanzania’s construction sector and the mediating role of top management commitment (TMC). A cross-sectional design was employed, with data collected from 314 construction firms. Environmental disclosure was measured using content analysis of financial reports, and Structural Equation Modelling using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method was used to estimate the structural model. The findings reveal that coercive, normative, and mimetic pressures significantly impact ED. The result also indicates that TMC significantly affects ED and mediates mimetic pressure’s effect, but does not mediate coercive or normative pressures. Similarly, …

Comminuted fractures, characterized by multiple bone fragments, present significant challenges in orthopedic surgery. Effective treatment often requires augmentation techniques to enhance fixation stability and promote bone regeneration. This review explores the application of bone void filler materials, including autografts, allografts, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and synthetic bone substitutes such as calcium phosphate ceramics and bioactive glass, in managing comminuted fractures. Autografts are the gold standard due to their superior osteogenic potential but are limited by donor site morbidity and availability. Allografts mitigate these issues but face concerns regarding immunogenicity and reduced biological activity. PMMA, widely used for structural augmentation, provides immediate …

An experimental continuous-wave (cw) pump-probe scheme is demonstrated by investigating the population and photoionization dynamics of an atomic system. In particular, 6Li atoms are initially prepared in optically pumped 22S1/2 and 22P3/2 states before being excited via multi-photon absorption from a tunable femtosecond laser. The subsequent cascade back to the ground state is analyzed by ionizing the atoms in the field of a cw optical dipole trap laser. Conventional spectroscopic methods, such as standard cold-target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy or velocity map imaging, cannot provide simultaneous momentum and time-resolved information on an event-by-event basis for the system investigated here. The …

Unlocking The Potential Of Copper Sulfide Tailings As A Secondary Source For Tellurium And Precious Metals: A Comprehensive Characterization Study, Fardis Nakhaei, Lana Alagha, Gary Wyss
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study investigated historical copper sulfide tailings as an unconventional source of tellurium (Te), gold (Au), and silver (Ag). Advanced analytical studies were conducted to determine the geochemical and mineralogical properties of the tailing samples. The results showed that tetradymite (Bi2Te2S) was the predominant Te-bearing mineral, while hessite (Ag2Te) was a minor Te carrier, both notably occurring within fine-grained (< 8 μm) inclusions in pyrite. Gold was present as native Au, electrum (Au-Ag), and within complex silver tellurides hosted primarily in chalcopyrite and pyrite. Froth flotation studies showed that the 180 to 38 μm size range was the optimum feed size that yielded recoveries of 59 %, 37 %, and 27 % for Te, Au, and Ag, respectively. These findings suggested that froth flotation is a feasible method for concentrating Te-Au-Ag-bearing phases. Given the strong association between Te, Au, Ag, and Cu, the co-extraction of these metals should significantly enhance the economic viability of tailings' processing.

When a fragile ordered state is suppressed to zero temperature, a quantum phase transition occurs, which is often marked by the appearance of unconventional superconductivity. While the quantum critical point can be hidden, the influence of the quantum criticality extends to fairly high temperatures, manifesting non-Fermi liquid behavior in a wide range of the field-temperature-pressure phase space. Here, we report the tuning of a magnetic energy scale in the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe2, previously identified with a peak in the c-axis electrical transport temperature dependence, using applied hydrostatic pressures and a-axis-oriented magnetic fields as complementary (and opposing) tuning parameters: …

Cyanobacterial blooms can be harmful to animals and humans exposed to their toxins; however, their environmental drivers and boundaries still need to be elucidated. Salinity has been demonstrated to be an important driver of community composition that sets boundaries of species migration and survival. The filamentous cyanobacteria Nodularia spumigena forms dense blooms in estuaries around the world, produces the hepatotoxin nodularin, and has been thought to not survive or fix nitrogen (N) in high salinities. From 2005–2009 we studied three bays of Great Salt Lake (USA), two of which are estuaries with salinities ranging from 0 to >90 g L …

Despite its reputation as one of the least digitized sectors, the construction industry increasingly adopts artificial intelligence (AI) and construction technologies. However, previous research has not adequately explored the benefits of AI techniques and construction technologies nor the correlations between them. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap. To this end, the authors used a multistep research methodology. First, a systematic literature review of studies published between 1985 and 2022 was conducted to identify AI techniques and construction technologies. Second, content and frequency analysis were performed to determine the benefits associated with AI and technology adoption. Finally, a survey …

Executive Compensation In A New Era: Pouring Old Wine Into New Bottles?, Florence Shu-Blankson
University of Dayton Law Review
The Author’s interest in executive compensation was sparked by the Delaware Court of Chancery’s decision to rescind the largest executive compensation package in U.S. history, awarded to Elon Musk by Tesla.1 Executive compensation has long been a contentious issue, and despite ongoing debates, efforts to regulate it effectively remain elusive. The process by which executive compensation committees and boards of directors determine these awards—along with their independence, the influence of controlling or dominant stockholders, and the transparency of decision-making— raises important questions about whether meaningful change is occurring or if the system remains fundamentally the same, merely repackaged as “old …

Effect Of Digital Noise Reduction Processing On Subcortical Speech Encoding And Relationship To Behavioral Outcomes, Subong Kim, Mary Schroeder, Hari M. Bharadwaj
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Perceptual benefits from digital noise reduction (NR) vary among individuals with different noise tolerance and sensitivity to distortions introduced in NR-processed speech; however, the physiological bases of the variance are understudied. Here, we developed objective measures of speech encoding in the ascending pathway as candidate measures of individual noise tolerance and sensitivity to NR-processed speech using the brainstem responses to speech syllable /da/. The speech-evoked brainstem response was found to be sensitive to the addition of noise and NR processing.
