Cyanobacterial blooms can be harmful to animals and humans exposed to their toxins; however, their environmental drivers and boundaries still need to be elucidated. Salinity has been demonstrated to be an important driver of community composition that sets boundaries of species migration and survival. The filamentous cyanobacteria Nodularia spumigena forms dense blooms in estuaries around the world, produces the hepatotoxin nodularin, and has been thought to not survive or fix nitrogen (N) in high salinities. Despite its reputation as one of the least digitized sectors, the construction industry increasingly adopts artificial intelligence (AI) and construction technologies. However, previous research has not adequately explored the benefits of AI techniques and construction technologies nor the correlations between them. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap. To this end, the authors used a multistep research methodology. First, a systematic literature review of studies published between 1985 and 2022 was conducted to identify AI techniques and construction technologies. Perceptual benefits from digital noise reduction (NR) vary among individuals with different noise tolerance and sensitivity to distortions introduced in NR-processed speech; however, the physiological bases of the variance are understudied. Here, we developed objective measures of speech encoding in the ascending pathway as candidate measures of individual noise tolerance and sensitivity to NR-processed speech using the brainstem responses to speech syllable /da/. The speech-evoked brainstem response was found to be sensitive to the addition of noise and NR processing. The NR effects on the consonant and vowel portion of the responses were robustly quantified using response-to-response correlation metrics and …

Farmland represents a significant portion of agricultural wealth, and its accurate valuation is crucial for farmers, investors, and policymakers, influencing everything from credit access to investment strategies. Historically, research has often relied on subjective survey data, which can suffer from biases, inaccuracies, and insufficient granularity. As Food Systems Fellows (January - December 2025), we evaluated the environmental and social impacts of Santa Clara University’s food procurement system in partnership with the Center for Sustainability and SCU Auxiliary Services. Using the Real Food Challenge framework, we assessed SCU Dining Services’ progress toward sustainability commitments outlined in Leading Through Laudato Si’, including expanding sustainable purchasing, increasing plant-based spending, and sourcing ethically produced food. Analysis showed that 19.27% of food purchases in February and October 2024 met Real Food criteria. This is below prior-year Real Food percentages and the university’s 25% by 2025 goal. This thesis presents a computational investigation of optimal kinematic operating parameters governing various hydrokinetic turbines (HKT) systems for the use of power generation within river and tidal environments. Two separate studies are performed. The first study investigates optimal cycle parameters for simple and complex kinematic modes governing the motion of oscillating foil energy harvesters (OFEH). An iterative gradient-ascent optimization method is used to search for local efficiency optima based on an initial set of kinematic parameters. Computational prediction of the flow physics associated with gas turbine film cooling is important for ensuring effective heat transfer design. These flow fields are highly turbulent and anisotropic, making the accuracy and efficiency of the chosen turbulence model an important aspect of performing high quality computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based analysis. Current industry standard Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models such as RANS k-ω SST, while computationally efficient, are subject to relatively high levels of uncertainty in their ability to predict these turbulent flow fields. The Utah Division of Water Resources contracted with Utah State University to document key scientific and policy information related to the current water conflict between Iron and Beaver Counties over the development of the Pine Valley Water Supply Project (PVWSP). The proposed PVWSP would pump groundwater from Pine Valley in Beaver County and pipe it southeast to the Cedar City region of Iron County served by the Central Iron County Water Conservancy District (CICWCD). Is Artificial Intelligence Really Taking Our Jobs?, Francesca A. Strom

This paper studies how artificial intelligence has reshaped occupational opportunities in the United States by analyzing changes in employment, median wages, and wage inequality across all occupations from 2014 through 2024. Using a difference-in-differences framework, I compare occupations associated with AI-related tasks to those not directly exposed to generative AI, with particular attention to the structural break introduced by the mainstream release of generative AI tools in 2022. The results show no statistically significant decline in employment among AI-exposed occupations, indicating that early adoption did not lead to measurable job displacement. Instead, the strongest effects appear in wage inequality. Among …

The transition towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in a devolved healthcare system such as the Philippines is beset by health workforce issues considering that it is among the world’s leading source countries for health workers. Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection, remains a significant public health threat. The timeliness, portability, and capacity of nanopore sequencing for diagnostics can aid in early detection and drug susceptibility testing (DST), which is crucial for effective TB control. This study synthesized current evidence on the diagnostic accuracy of the nanopore sequencing technology in detecting MTB and its DST profile. This thesis develops a physiologically inspired three-tank model of human bioenergetics to describe and optimize fatigue and recovery during exercise. The aerobic, phosphagen, and glycogen systems are modeled as coupled reservoirs whose states constrain instantaneous power output. Building on this representation, dynamic programming is used to compute pacing strategies that respect physiological limits while maximizing task-specific goals such as peak power or total work over a fixed duration, enabling individualized, goal-driven exercise prescriptions. This article demonstrates the reception of Thomas of Ireland’s Manipulus florum (1306) and John of Wales’ Communiloquium (ca. 1270) in a sermon by King Robert of Naples (1276-1343) promoting the revival of the military alliance known as the Lombard League, and also his use of the Manipulus in another sermon. A full edition of Robert’s sermon “pro liga Lombardie” is appended. It also corrects the misattribution to Robert of a collection of anecdotes and quotations attributed to ancient philosophers and provides a brief comparative analysis of the short and long recensions of the Communiloquium.

This thesis explores a compositional technique in which stellar constellations are arranged upon musical staves in a variety of iterations to create a basis from which to draw melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material. These raw extrapolations of unaltered notes are then arranged and orchestrated into thematic music for full orchestra, centered around elements from the mythological background behind the constellations used. An accompanying analysis explains the specific applications of this technique within each movement of the work, the significance of each, and the variety of ways in which musical inspiration was drawn from the raw materials. This essay explores the conceptual, practical, and relational foundations of building and sustaining communication research labs. Drawing on early models of research teams, we argue that contemporary labs function as living systems that integrate research, teaching, mentorship, and community engagement. The essay outlines practical considerations for creating and maintaining labs, including recruitment, infrastructure, leadership succession, and digital presence, while emphasizing the importance of flexibility and autonomy. Rather than viewing labs as static organizational units, we position them as relational ecosystems that evolve through connection, shared purpose, and adaptability across time and institutions. Women make up the majority of degree earners and most of those teaching at higher education institutions. Yet, women are not advancing to the highest ranks. How female faculty receive credit for their work may account for the discrepancy in women advancing to the highest ranks. This single-institution case study explored institutional practices and policies as they related to workload satisfaction and rewards for female faculty. Following the framework from the Faculty Workload and Rewards Project, FWRP, the case used the constructs of equity-minded faculty workloads to shape the analysis. Dielectric Properties Of Surface-Doped Partially Stabilised Zirconia With Ceramic Nanomaterials, Lara Al-Hakeem, Shihab Zaidan, Wafaa Khalef

The microstructural and dielectric properties of Yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) were studied before and after sintering with BaTiO3 and WO3 doping. After sintering, FE-SEM analysis revealed increased grain coalescence and growth, with BaTiO3 causing 300 nm grain expansion and WO3 promoting uniform grain distribution without significant grain size increase (~200 nm). These microstructural changes dramatically altered dielectric behavior. All sintered samples had higher dielectric constants than pre-sintered ones between 100–1000 kHz due to reduced porosity and enhanced homogeneity. Dielectric constant was highest in BaTiO3-doped Y-PSZ at lower frequencies, while WO-doped showed superior frequency stability and lower dielectric loss across the …

Coastal dune ecosystems face ongoing threats from human-mediated disturbance and altered resource availability. Because these dunes provide critical habitat for many organisms, including shorebirds, beach mice, and arthropods, changes in disturbance regimes or resource availability can impact plant communities and higher trophic levels by altering plant richness and productivity, which in turn influence arthropod abundance and diversity. To examine how disturbance and nutrient addition affect arthropod communities, we established twenty 5×5 m plots on Dauphin Island, crossing mechanical disturbance with a 10 g m⁻² addition of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, replicated across five experimental blocks. Climate change has major implications for sustainable use and conservation of natural resources. Many natural systems are already under severe stress and may be unable to sustain historical use patterns; resource management decisions can also exacerbate or mitigate climate change by affecting the balance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This Article describes the legal and scientific basis for recognizing agencies’ obligations to assess and respond to climate change, drawing insights from a survey of U.S. litigation involving forests, fisheries, rangelands, and freshwater resources. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are at increased risk of developing active TB, tend to present with more severe disease and experience adverse treatment outcomes compared to individuals without T2D co-morbidity. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for increased susceptibility of patients with T2D to TB remain poorly understood.

Methods: We performed bronchoscopies and collected bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) from TB contacts with and without T2D in South Africa and obtained paired human alveolar macrophages (HAMs) and monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) for transcriptomic, epigenetic and functional assays.
