Fruits have a relatively short shelf life. One of the extensively researched preservation methods for fruits is edible coating. Edible coating is a method of coating food products with a polymer layer. Considering the environmental and sustainability aspects, edible coatings were synthesized from biodegradable polymers derived from polysaccharides. Chitosan is a widely developed and researched type of biopolymer due to its antimicrobial activity. In addition to antimicrobial activity, antioxidant properties are important in food packaging applications. Mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) contain various secondary metabolites that play a role in antioxidant activity, such as mangiferin, gallic acid, flavonoids, and gallotanin. …

Study And Characterization Of Nitration Of Isovanillic Acid Derivatives Using Nmr And Mass Spectroscopy, Elvira Hermawati, Pipih Lutfi Sa'adah, Ade Danova, Didin Mujahidin, Iqbal Musthapa

Chimica et Natura Acta

Isovanillic acid and its derivatives serve as precursors in the synthesis of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which are used to treat cancer cell lines. A crucial step in this process is the nitration of isovanillic acid through nucleophilic aromatic substitution, resulting in 6-nitroisovanilic acid and its derivatives, which act as intermediates for forming a quinazolinone ring. However, this study revealed that direct nitration of isovanillic acid derivatives led to unexpected products, such as 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy-2,6-dinitrobenzoic acid (1) and 4-(3-(2-methoxy-4-nitrophenoxy)propyl)morpholine (4). Additionally, the optimal conditions for etherification of 2 with N-(3-chloropropyl)morpholine to produce 3 involved using Cs2CO3 in DMF and refluxing for …

Chimica et Natura Acta

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer characterized by the abnormal proliferation of B cells that accumulate in the bone marrow. The proliferation of these cells depends on the role of the proteasome through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway to degrade proteins that regulate the cell cycle, apoptosis, and stress response. The proteasome is the main target of proteasome inhibitors for the treatment of multiple myeloma. Flavonoid compounds in Hibiscus sabdariffa flowers, such as isoquercitrin, quercitrin, quercetagetin, isorhamnetin, and astragalin, have the potential to act as proteasome inhibitors. The insilico study aims to determine the potential of these compounds as proteasome inhibitors based …

Online Decision Mamba, Trenton W. Ruf

Dissertations and Theses

Online in-context reinforcement learning enhances offline-trained policies through online fine-tuning. We introduce Online Decision Mamba (ODM), an architecture that replaces the attention mechanism in Online Decision Transformers (ODT) with the Mamba module to improve long-context sequence modeling and overall RL performance. We performed in-depth evaluations on MuJoCo (OpenAI Gym) and Atari benchmarks, comparing ODM against state-of-the-art offline and online baselines—including Decision Mamba (DM) and ODT. Our results show that ODM achieves competitive or superior performance, with particularly robust gains when initial datasets lack expert demonstrations. In the Qbert Atari environment, ODM shows context-length sensitivity similar to offline DM; however, we …

I Can’T Believe It’S Not Social: Investigating The Relationship Between Loneliness, Parasocial Relationships, And Potential Moderators, Hannah I. Suozzi Dec 2025

I Can’T Believe It’S Not Social: Investigating The Relationship Between Loneliness, Parasocial Relationships, And Potential Moderators, Hannah I. Suozzi

Master's Theses

Increased loneliness trends coincide with increased media use. Media is turned to as a source of comfort and distraction from the real world. There is cause to believe that people also use media as a way to form parasocial relationships (PSRs), one-sided relationships audiences form with media figures (i.e., celebrities, influencers, and fictional characters). The connection between loneliness and PSR is thought to be moderated by social vulnerability, particularly the need to belong (NTB) and ethnicity. The medium from which PSRs originate lacks empirical study. To address the limitations, this study analyzed data collected from San Jose State University students …

Robust Anomaly Detection Under Data Imbalance, Noise, And Label Scarcity, Zahra Salekshahrezaee Dec 2025

Robust Anomaly Detection Under Data Imbalance, Noise, And Label Scarcity, Zahra Salekshahrezaee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In today’s data-driven landscape, large volumes of data are generated continuously, often containing imperfections such as noise, missing data, or unreliable labeling. These real-world datasets are typically high-dimensional, sparsely labeled, and imbalanced, creating substantial challenges for both supervised and unsupervised learning. These challenges are especially prevalent in the task of anomaly detection, where instances belonging to the class of interest are rare and underrepresented compared to normal instances. This dissertation proposes and evaluates robust frameworks for anomaly detection that address these data challenges and improve model performance and robustness using real-world datasets, including credit card transactions and cognitive assessments. Supervised …

Infection leads to durable cell-autonomous changes in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), resulting in production of innate immune cells with heightened immunity. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, termed central trained immunity, remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that infection induces histone modifications leading to changes in chromatin accessibility that are conserved during differentiation from HSPCs to myeloid progenitors and monocytes. We conducted genome-wide surveillance of histone marks H3K27ac and H3K4me3 and chromatin accessibility in hematopoietic stem cells, multipotent progenitor 3, granulocyte-monocyte progenitors, monocytes and macrophages of naïve and Mycobacterium avium infected mice. Interferon signaling pathways and related transcription factor binding …

Early-stage breast cancers resistant to neoadjuvant therapy (NAT), characterized by high residual cancer burden (RCB) after treatment, have an increased risk of metastatic recurrence. Here, we show that circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) detected using a tumor-informed test (1) can improve risk stratification of patients with NAT-resistant tumors (RCB-II/RCB-III) and (2) predict response to NAT. Stratification using ctDNA status at pretreatment or post-NAT and ctDNA dynamics identified NAT-resistant tumors with a significantly decreased risk of metastatic recurrence. ctDNA clearance as early as week 3 across receptor subtypes predicted favorable responses to NAT, including immunotherapies. Interestingly, less than a fifth of patients …

The human brain contains a milieu of extracellular matrix (ECM) components that promote normal development and physiology. ECM signaling pathways are often dysregulated in brain pathologies including the malignant cancer glioblastoma (GBM). Here, we used single-cell spatial transcriptomic platforms to map the expression of nearly 400 ECM genes in matching non-cancerous brain and GBM samples. At least four different GBM cell populations have been identified that show unique ECM expression profiles and spatial enrichment in distinct intratumor regions. Spatial mapping demonstrates largely non-overlapping expression signatures of ECM components in GBM stromal cell types, particularly in vascular endothelial cells and microglia/macrophages. …

Military Ai And The Specter Of The Limitless War, Yuval Shany, Yahli Shereshevsky Dec 2025

Military Ai And The Specter Of The Limitless War, Yuval Shany, Yahli Shereshevsky

International Law Studies

Legal and extra-legal factors related to the development of international humanitarian law (IHL) support the exercise of strategic restraint during armed conflicts. We claim, however, that technological developments in the area of military artificial intelligence (AI) fundamentally do away with many of the technological constraints that limited the capacity of militaries to fully utilize the “license to kill” afforded to them by IHL. Such a violence-enhancing effect can become even more dramatic in cases where other restraining factors are less effective. The upshot of our analysis is that the implicit assumption that IHL would be applied in a context of …

Running From The Headlines: Evaluating Levels Of News Consumption Attitudes Across Generations, Andrew Francis

Honors Theses

The primary goal of this research is to answer the question "What behavioral trends exist across various generations and other demographics when it comes to how people consume and interact with news coverage?" With newspapers and other traditional mediums for news consumption being largely phased out of our increasingly digital society, it is important for communicators and journalists to have a comprehensive understanding of how to best reach members of their desired audience. I have studied the data collected and analyzed what trends are apparent in the survey's sample size, which can hopefully be applied to the larger population. To …

98% of T cells reside in tissues, yet nearly all human T cell analyses are performed on peripheral blood. We performed single-cell sequencing of 5.7 million T cells from autologous blood and tonsils of ten donors. We identified distinct patterns of clonal expansion associated with tonsil-restricted phenotypes. Clonal sharing between blood and tonsils was lower than previous estimates and increased with age. Identical T cell receptor (TCR) sequences exhibited limited concordance in their phenotypes across compartments. Furthermore, location dictated the frequencies, clonal dominance, and phenotypes of antigen-specific T cells. Using immune organoids, we showed that antigen exposure drives functionally distinct …

Identifying Stable Parental Lines For Stripe Rust Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Ehsan Shakiba, David Moon Dec 2025

Identifying Stable Parental Lines For Stripe Rust Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Ehsan Shakiba, David Moon

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, continues to be a major challenge in soft red winter wheat (SRWW) production, especially in the southern United States. In this area, mild winters and wet springs frequently lead to early and severe disease outbreaks. Although many lines demonstrate resistance in a single season, that resistance often does not last across multiple years. For breeding programs, this variability makes it hard to identify truly reliable lines. In this study, we evaluated 111 SRWW breeding lines over three consecutive growing seasons (2021-2024) under artificial inoculation in field conditions in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Stripe …

Evidence is emerging that perturbed postnatal gut microbiota development is causally related to childhood undernutrition. Clinical trials in undernourished Bangladeshi children found that a polysaccharide-rich, microbiota-directed complementary food (MDCF-2) designed to repair this perturbation produced superior ponderal and linear growth compared to a standard ready-to-use supplementary food. Subsequent analyses disclosed several candidate bioactive polysaccharides in the MDCF and their bacterial targets, notably strains of
