This article aims to explore the history of cholera in Thailand from 1820 to 1959, focusing on disease prevention and the evolving treatment methods for cholera patients across different historical periods. The article argues that knowledge about pathogens and the discovery of Vibrio cholerae as the cause of cholera did not lead to significant changes in cholera prevention and treatment methods before the mid-20th century. This research article aims to 1) analyze the Phra Malai manuscript of Wat Thewasangharam from a paleographic perspective, and 2) examine the interrelationship between this manuscript and the local society and culture of Kanchanaburi. A qualitative research methodology was employed, incorporating fieldwork data collection and documentary analysis and synthesis. The findings indicate that 1) the Phra Malai manuscript of Wat Thewasangharam is a Buddhist didactic text inscribed on white Thai folding books (samut thai khao), written in Khmer–Pali and Khmer–Thai scripts, and recorded in both Pali and Thai. BACKGROUND: Microglia, the brain’s resident immune cells, play a pivotal role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis. These cells exhibit diverse transcriptional states in response to neuroinflammatory stimuli, and characterizing these states is essential for understanding AD mechanisms. METHODS: We integrated single-cell and spatial transcriptomic datasets from multiple cohorts and brain regions, encompassing both experimental models and human tissues. Findings were validated through immunostaining of human brain samples. RESULTS: Our comprehensive atlas revealed pronounced heterogeneity among microglial states, with disease-associated microglia (DAM) significantly enriched in AD brains compared to controls. A prosthetic socket is essential for achieving comfort, gait symmetry, and overall satisfaction for amputees. Effective suspension systems are crucial for securely attaching prostheses, thereby optimizing comfort, functional performance, and long-term limb health. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an intelligent vacuum-assisted suspension system for transtibial prostheses to improve socket fit, gait stability, and reduce residual limb movement. The system integrates force-sensitive resistors (FSRs) and an inertial measurement unit (MPU6050) with accelerometer and gyroscope sensors, continuously monitoring interface pressure and limb motion. Ipomoea aquatica, commonly known as water spinach, is a leafy vegetable widely consumed in tropical and subtropical regions for its nutritional benefits. This study investigated the potential analgesic activity of the ethanolic leaf extract of I. aquatica, as no prior scientific evidence supports its role in acute pain management. Male Swiss albino mice were used in an acetic acid-induced writhing test, with aspirin as the positive control and plain normal saline solution (PNSS) as the negative control. This study builds a mesoscale finite element simulation to examine how internal stresses form during additive metal manufacturing using directed energy deposition. The goal is to track how heat and stress develop layer by layer and determine where a failure criterion could appear during the print. The model uses temperature-dependent material properties for Inconel 718 and a moving heat source defined with custom G-code.

Mortality, Temperature, And Public Adaptation Policy: Evidence From Italy, Filippo Pavanello, Giulia Valenti

In 2004, Italy introduced a national program to address heat-related health risks, combining public awareness campaigns, heat-wave warning systems, and hospital protocols. Leveraging administrative mortality data and high-frequency temperature variation, we show that the program reduced heat-related mortality by more than 57% on days at or above 30°C. To identify the mechanisms, we exploit the staggered introduction of heat-wave warning systems across provinces and show that treated areas experienced substantially larger reductions in heat-related mortality. We further document that information disclosure plays a key role in driving these reductions. Overall, our findings underscore the importance of public adaptation policies that …

Over the holiday break we lost a distinguished friend and alumnus with the passing of Ken Nunn ’67. He was 85.

Anyone who’s ever spent time in Indiana has likely seen or heard Nunn. His appearances in television commercials, on highway billboards, and on radio spots made him one of the most recognizable figures in the Hoosier State. And on days when the weather was just right, it was almost an Indiana University rite of passage to spot him—gray hair, sparkling smile—rolling down Kirkwood Avenue in a convertible.

Introduction: Women and LGBTQ+ undergraduates face higher rates of sexual assault and rape compared to cisgender male peers—the overwhelming majority of perpetrators. Federal policies have aimed to curb campus sexual violence, yet questions remain about the efficacy of consent education, particularly among cisgender heterosexual men. Methods: This study surveyed 1567 undergraduate students at a large Northeastern public university in 2017 and 2022. Responses to a nine-item consent scale were analyzed by gender, sexuality, and demographic factors. Results: Cisgender heterosexual (cis-het) men had poorer understanding of consent compared to women and LGBTQ+ students, both in 2017 and 2022. Introduction: Scarce in‑vivo data describe how ribs move at the costotransverse joints during quiet breathing—knowledge critical to thoracic biomechanics and pain mechanisms. This pilot study uses four‑dimensional computed tomography (4D‑CT) to quantify, for the first time, the three‑dimensional magnitude and direction of rib motion at these joints throughout quiet respiration.
