Deep Search In K–12 Education: Opportunities, Risks, And Research-Literacy Imperatives For Ai-Enabled Classrooms, Steven Baule, Dillon Martinnez
Essays in Education
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) deep search tools, such as ChatGPT’s Deep Research, Google’s Gemini Deep Search, Perplexity Research, Claude’s extended search, and emerging academic engines like Elicit and Consensus, are reshaping the ways students and educators locate, evaluate, and synthesize information. These tools promise to democratize research and reduce barriers to high-quality sources, particularly in K–12 environments where time, instructional capacity, and access to resources vary widely. However, recent analyses reveal significant challenges: inaccuracies, opaque algorithms, hallucinated facts, and inconsistencies across platforms. Using classroom-relevant examples and controlled experiments, including ambiguous historical searches and complex educational policy queries, this article examines …
Environmental Load In Technology-Rich Classrooms: A Practitioner Reflection On Student Attention, Cognitive Fatigue, And Instructional Design, Christopher Morales
Environmental Load In Technology-Rich Classrooms: A Practitioner Reflection On Student Attention, Cognitive Fatigue, And Instructional Design, Christopher Morales
Essays in Education
This practitioner essay examines student disengagement in technology-rich classrooms through the lens of cognitive load and environmental demand. Rather than interpreting all off-task behavior as laziness, avoidance, or lack of motivation, the essay argues that some students may be responding to cumulative overload created by screens, transitions, digital platforms, visual clutter, noise, lighting, and fragmented instructional routines. Drawing from classroom observation and cognitive load theory, the essay introduces environmental load as a practical concept for educators seeking to preserve student attention without lowering academic expectations. The essay offers reflective questions and instructional adjustments that can help teachers and school leaders …

Groundwater discharge plays an important role in the hydrologic and ecologic functioning of rivers including sustaining streamflow and related habitat year-round. Simultaneously, groundwater supports the increasing demands of people as the global population continues to grow. Balancing the needs of users becomes increasingly important as climate change introduces greater uncertainty in water resources and fisheries, especially for economically important anadromous species that depend on freshwater resources. We investigated the seasonal and regional variability of groundwater contributions to six non-glacial mainstem salmon-bearing rivers in south-central Alaska. We hypothesized that groundwater contributes more than half of the annual streamflow, and nearly all …
Balancing Beliefs In The Curriculum: Exploring The Educational Value And Constitutional Limits Of Teaching About Religion In U.S. Public Schools, Maria Rina Limbo
Balancing Beliefs In The Curriculum: Exploring The Educational Value And Constitutional Limits Of Teaching About Religion In U.S. Public Schools, Maria Rina Limbo
Liberal Studies (MA) Final Essays
This thesis examines the educational value and constitutional limits of teaching about religion in U.S. public schools. It asks whether public schools may teach about religion academically without violating constitutional neutrality, where the boundary lies between education and indoctrination, and how religious literacy might be integrated in ways that benefit students while honoring First Amendment constraints. Using a mixed-methods design, the study gathered survey data from 104 adult participants drawn from diverse educational, religious, and community backgrounds across multiple states. Surveys were distributed primarily through mailed and hand-delivered print copies, with a small number completed electronically. Quantitative data were tabulated …
Impact Of Instagram Flyers In Higher Education: Within Resident Assistant Program Attendance Marketing, Mary J. Mcdonald
Impact Of Instagram Flyers In Higher Education: Within Resident Assistant Program Attendance Marketing, Mary J. Mcdonald
Liberal Studies (MA) Final Essays
This exploratory pilot study examines whether posting Instagram digital flyers affects Resident Assistant (RA) program attendance in the higher-education Housing and Residence Life (HRL) context. Instagram has emerged as a dominant channel of communication among Generation Z (1997-2012). As a result, higher education institutions have increasingly used social media to prompt student engagement and foster belonging, in hopes of strengthening retention. Using a quasi-experimental matched comparison design, attendance data from the 2024 academic year without Instagram flyers were compared to the 2025 academic year with Instagram flyers. The independent variable was the implementation of Instagram digital flyers, and the dependent …

Background/aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) exhibits substantial morphological and biological heterogeneity. Clinical and molecular relevance of the infiltrative subtype remains poorly defined in the context of cancer immunotherapy. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact and molecular features of infiltrative HCC in patients treated with first-line atezolizumab plus bevacizumab (Ate/Bev).
Methods: We included 307 patients with advanced HCC treated with Ate/Bev and classified them into four gross morphological types based on imaging. Multi-omics profiling was conducted on tumor samples. Type IV infiltrative signature was derived and externally validated using five independent HCC cohorts, including IMbrave150.
Results: Infiltrative morphology, encompassing pure and …

CRISPR, Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat, as a powerful genome engineering system, has been widely accepted and employed in gene editing of a vast range of cell types. Compared to zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs) or transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), CRISPR shows a less complicated process and higher efficiency. With the development of different CRISPR systems, it can be used not only to knock out a gene but also to make precise modifications, activate or repress target genes with epigenetic modifications, and even for genome wide screening. Here we will describe the procedure of generating a stable cell line …
Bayesian Modelling On Periodically And Multiple Periodically Correlated Time Series Data, Jie Yao
Bayesian Modelling On Periodically And Multiple Periodically Correlated Time Series Data, Jie Yao
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Time series with multiple periodically correlated (MPC) components present a complex challenge, with relatively limited prior research. Most existing models are designed for simpler periodically correlated (PC) components and often struggle with over-parameterization, optimization issues, and capturing complex PC patterns within a time series. Frequency separation techniques can help preserve the correlation structure of individual PC components, while Bayesian methods can integrate new and prior information to refine beliefs about these components. This study proposes a two-stage approach that combines frequency separation and Bayesian techniques to forecast PC and MPC time series data. This method aims to demonstrate improved effectiveness …

Sea level rise poses significant risks to coastal infrastructure and recreational activities, limiting public coastal access. In this study, we evaluate the current use and measure the recreational value of coastal access areas in Bristol County, Rhode Island, while assessing the vulnerability of those areas to rising sea levels. By combining measurements of non-market economic value derived from cellular device location data with modeled future sea level projections, we quantify the economic value at risk under different inundation scenarios. We produce site-level results, which provide context and quantifiable measurements of social value that can guide prioritization of mitigation strategies to …

Key-Point-Based Sign Language Translation With Multi-Stream Motion Modeling And Cross-Lingual Transfer, Alex Muchiri Kagozi
Key-Point-Based Sign Language Translation With Multi-Stream Motion Modeling And Cross-Lingual Transfer, Alex Muchiri Kagozi
Dissertations and Theses
Automatic sign language translation remains challenging because models must recover linguistic structure from complex visual motion while relying on limited annotated data. This thesis investigates whether compact skeletal key-points can serve as an effective alternative to RGB video for continuous sign language recognition and translation, motivated by the privacy, computational efficiency, and transferability of skeletal representations. To address this problem, a segmented key-point-based framework is evaluated in continuous sign language recognition (Sign2Gloss), gloss-mediated translation (Sign2Gloss2Text), gloss-free translation (Sign2Text), and transfer learning within a common modeling pipeline. The proposed framework is a motion-aware multi-stream transformer encoder. Rather than processing the signer …

Hybridization chain reaction RNA-fluorescent in situ hybridization (HCR RNA-FISH) is a powerful and increasingly used method for visualizing gene expression in cells and tissues. A probe set against polyadenylated RNA (poly(A)) is often used as a positive control for RNA integrity and staining quality. While optimizing this technique in the ovary of the brown anole lizard (Anolis sagrei), we found that the poly(A) probe produced a strikingly specific and intense signal in pyriform cells, a specialized lizard-specific nurse cell type. This staining pattern was found in both whole-mount samples and paraffin sections, suggesting that poly(A) signal intensity can serve as …

Background: Accurate and consistent image segmentation across longitudinal scans is essential in many clinical applications, including surveillance, treatment monitoring, and adaptive interventions. While personalized model adaptation using patient-specific prior scans has shown promise, current approaches typically rely on fixed training durations and lack mechanisms to determine optimal stopping points on a per-patient basis, particularly in the absence of validation labels.
Purpose: We propose an uncertainty-guided test-time optimization (TTO) framework that dynamically adjusts the personalization duration for each patient using a validation-free stopping criterion based on predictive uncertainty.
Methods: Our framework personalizes a generalized segmentation model using patient-specific prior imaging and …

El Cine Alegórico Del Tardofranquismo: El Arte Frente Al Silencio Y El Olvido, Angela Rodriguez Mooney
The Coastal Review

Periodontitis is a biofilm-induced chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by gingival inflammation and alveolar bone loss. According to a national survey, approximately half of the U.S. adults are affected by periodontal disease. To effectively prevent and treat periodontitis, it is essential to address its underlying causes. The primary etiological factors include polymicrobial synergy and dysbiosis of the oral microbiota, and a dysregulated immune response. The standard therapeutic approach, mechanical removal of biofilm through debridement, sometimes demonstrates limited efficacy, particularly in cases of severe periodontitis, which may require adjunctive or additional therapy. Emerging evidence indicates that periodontal tissue destruction is initiated by …

Indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM) is a clonal mast cell disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms that can persist despite treatment with antihistamines, leukotriene antagonists, and mast cell stabilizers. Treatment options are limited when symptoms remain refractory, and avapritinib is contraindicated or declined. We describe the case of a 62-year-old female with an 11-year history of ISM who developed worsening pruritus and urticaria despite extensive conservative and biologic therapies, including topical corticosteroids, hydroxyzine, montelukast, omalizumab, and dupilumab. Given her history of stroke, she declined avapritinib. Nemolizumab was initiated with a 60 mg loading dose followed by 30 mg every four weeks. After …

Prescribed Fire Liability And Administration In Western States: An Empiricalanalysis And Call For Reform, Stephen R. Miller, Anastasia Telesetsky
Utah Law Review
Wildfires have grown exponentially over the last few years due to fuel loads, range- and timber-management policies, and climate change. The cost of fire suppression is also growing in both rural and urban areas. For instance, the 2016 Pioneer Fire in rural Idaho cost around $100 million to fight, while the 2025 urban conflagrations in Los Angeles, California destroyed over 16,000 structures despite an astonishing array of suppression resources deployed. Something new, and something big, in terms of law and policy interventions, is needed to stem the intensity of wildfires. Increasingly, governments, private citizens, and even corporate interests like insurance …
The Idea Of Air, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson
The Idea Of Air, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson
Utah Law Review
How we view air, especially clean air, has meaningful normative and practical implications. Today, it is commonly recognized as an exhaustible natural resource. But air was not always thought of as something to be conserved, developed, and used. This Article is the first to explore and interrogate that view. The shift to seeing air as a resource started in the first part of the twentieth century. Previously, air was characterized by its limitless supply of oxygen: a pure public good. Over time, the quality of that good changed, and a precious resource emerged. That resource—especially its chemical and physical characteristics—inspired …
Protecting Wild Animal Abundance, Natalie Jacewicz
Protecting Wild Animal Abundance, Natalie Jacewicz
Utah Law Review
Americans today encounter billions fewer wild animals than their grandparents did. These ongoing losses affect an enormous array of interests, including billions of dollars in costs to agriculture, tourism, and land management, as well as lost wildlife encounters. Dramatic declines in wild animal abundance reveal a blind spot in American law: In general, environmental law does not aim to protect the “supply” of wild animals we think of as common. Because scientists have only recently begun to appreciate the scale of common animal loss, the phenomenon has received comparatively little attention from legal scholars. This Article sets forth the problem …
Gorsuch’S Dissent And The Current State Of Navajo Water Rights Claims, William Clark
Gorsuch’S Dissent And The Current State Of Navajo Water Rights Claims, William Clark
Utah Law Review
Water rights have been a key feature of the Navajo Nation’s relationship with the United States. Since the time the Navajo were forcibly removed to the Bosque Redondo in the 1860s, the Tribe has fought for sufficient access to water. A key, but unfortunate, moment in this dispute came when the United States Supreme Court, in Arizona v. Navajo Nation, determined that the 1868 treaty between the United States and the Navajo Nation did not require the United States to take steps to secure water for the Tribe. The Navajo Nation is now on the cusp of settling its Colorado …

The Pharmaceutical Impact Of Some Plant Species On Mantle Cell Lymphoma (Mcl), Marwa Jbara
School of Biomedical Sciences Theses
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is considered clinically aggressive and an incurable subtype of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) with poor prognosis and resistance to conventional therapies. This has prompted increasing interest in novel therapeutic approaches, particularly those derived from natural sources with multi-targeted mechanisms of action and low systemic toxicity. In recent years, plant-derived essential oils and their bioactive compounds have emerged as promising therapeutic agents for MCL due to their bioactive properties and low systemic toxicity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the growth inhibitory effect of essential oils from basil, tea tree, turmeric and black pepper …

Tempo: Training-Time Equilibration Of Modalities For Per-Sample Optimization In Multimodal Sentiment, Yi Zhao, Erik Cambria, Xiaosong E, Xianxun Zhu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multimodal sentiment models often become over-reliant on the “easiest” modality (typically text), leading to three coupled sub-problems: (i) representation-level dominance, where weaker modalities contribute little to the fused representation; (ii) optimization-level dominance, where the strongest modality drives most gradient updates and suppresses learning in others; and (iii) robustness degradation, where audio or vision fail under noise or missing inputs at test time. We present TEMPO, a plug-and-play training framework that mitigates these issues by rebalancing learning pressure across modalities while leaving inference unchanged. For each mini-batch, TEMPO estimates relative modality strength and applies two synchronized, training-only controls: selective forward attenuation …

Purified Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval, Yang Zhou, Jingru Yang, Jin Wang, Kaixiang Huang, Guodong Lu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sketches, as a new solution in multimedia systems that can replace natural language, are characterized by sparse visual cues such as simple strokes that differ significantly from natural images containing complex elements such as background, foreground, and texture. This misalignment poses substantial challenges for zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR). Prior approaches match sketches to full images and tend to overlook redundant elements in natural images, leading to model distraction and semantic ambiguity. To address this issue, we introduce a distraction-agnostic framework, purified cross-domain matching (PuXIM), which operates on a straightforward principle: masking and matching. We devise a visual-cross-linguistic (VxL) sampler …

Developing new portfolio-management algorithms typically demands substantial programming effort, limiting rapid experimentation and excluding finance professionals without coding skills. Current robo-advisory tools offer pre-built but rigid strategies, restricting customization and experimentation. We introduce PortfolioPilot, an open-source, agentic platform that enables users to generate bespoke portfolio through natural-language descriptions. Leveraging the Anthropic Claude API, PortfolioPilot dynamically synthesizes executable TypeScript algorithms that run in the frontend with security validation. The system integrates real-time backtesting with historical market data, classical optimization algorithms (Markowitz, LSTM, ARIMA), and interactive performance visualizations.

Sequential Recommenders, which exploit dynamic user intents through interaction sequences, are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. While existing attacks primarily rely on data poisoning, they require large-scale user access or fake profiles, thus lacking practicality. In this paper, we focus on the Profile Pollution Attack that subtly contaminates partial user interactions to induce targeted mispredictions. Previous PPA methods suffer from two limitations, i.e., i) overreliance on sequence horizon impact restricts fine-grained perturbations on item transitions, and ii) holistic modifications cause detectable distribution shifts. To address these challenges, we propose a constrained reinforcement driven attack CREAT that synergizes a bi-level optimization framework …

Understanding calculus students’ perspectives can provide valuable insights into their learning needs and help develop strategies to enhance persistence in STEM programs. Numerous studies have shown that the use of digital technologies (DT) influences student engagement, motivation, and mathematics achievement. In this project, we explored students’ perspectives on using DT in calculus. We interviewed eight calculus students from a midwestern doctorate-granting institution in the United States and used thematic analysis informed by the didactical tetrahedron, accounting for internal and external factors that may influence the teaching and learning process. Students reflected on their use of technology, identifying various benefits, including …
