Application Of A Scale-Resolving Turbulence Model To Supersonic Retropropulsion Flows In Earth And Martian Atmospheres, Rebecca Thompson

The Blended Partially-Averaged Navier-Stokes (BPANS) turbulence model was used to simulate complex turbulent compressible flows seen in supersonic retropropulsion (SRP). The model was incorporated in the OpenFOAM solver sonicFoam to investigate SRP flows in Earth and Martian atmospheres. The new sonicFoam with BPANS was first tested for subsonic flows using the shear flow benchmark case of flow around a cylinder. Results show good agreement of velocity profiles with experimental values. SonicFoam was then validated for compressible flows using an experimental SRP configuration. Pressure coefficient distribution along the forebody and aft body of the geometry show good agreement with experimental results. …

It has been said that if the building blocks of a system were designed and implemented correctly, then their subsequent integration would be straightforward. The complex systems integration analysis approach presented in this thesis provides the mechanisms to construct those blocks. A spectral clustering algorithm is used to cluster elements into modules, and the normalized integrative complexity metric is used to evaluate the portion of structural complexity that can be attributed to integrating a system from its modules. Resourcing rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash offers the opportunity to recycle industrial waste and reduce national dependence on foreign suppliers. In this research, the leaching behaviors of pond and fresh ash were studied to evaluate their suitability for REE recovery. Concentrations of REEs in leachates were measured and compared to kinetic models from literature, and the ash was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to characterize the observed behaviors. The pond ash leachate exhibited lower REE concentrations with steady release patterns, likely due to the acid resistant, REE-bearing aluminosilicate glass phases. In contrast, the …

Accurately estimating near-surface winds during hurricane landfalls is crucial for enhancing situational awareness and facilitating post-storm recovery efforts. Previous studies have used coastal radar Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) winds to estimate 10-m winds during hurricane landfalls; however, a notable weak bias was observed. This work demonstrates that the significant weak bias results from neglecting the wind structure within a shallow internal boundary layer (IBL). Results from an operational radar VAD analysis during the landfalls of Hurricanes Ida (2021) and Zeta (2020) indicate that leveraging the IBL winds is essential for accurate 10-m wind estimates during hurricane landfalls. Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDIs) are increasingly used to improve traffic flow and safety, particularly where left-turn volumes are high. However, their operational performance under high heavy vehicle percentages has not yet been evaluated. This thesis investigates the impact of varying HV percentages and traffic volumes at a sample DDI location. Traffic simulation using Synchro software was used to model the DDI under scenarios with varying heavy vehicle percentages and varying volumes. This approach allowed evaluation of traffic growth and increasing heavy vehicle presence on DDI performance, capturing realistic operational conditions for freight-heavy corridors. In the field of electric propulsion (EP), xenon is the most commonly used gas for ionization. However, krypton has been identified as a potential substitute due to its high specific impulse and low cost compared to xenon. Therefore, there is a desire to understand the effects of using krypton. Average Heat Flux Measurements In A 25 Mm Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine, Yash Patel

The average heat flux of a 25 mm rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs) in an annular center body (CB) and a cylindrical center bodiless (CBL) configuration is measured using a water-based calorimeter. The heat flux sensitivity for both geometric configurations are explored as a function of mass flux (ψ) for a constant equivalence ratio = 1.25 using gaseous methane and oxygen. The average heat flux of the CBL geometry is on average 47% higher at each axial location than the CB geometry for a given ψ. The peak heat flux measured for the CBL chamber is 25.58 ± 0.58 MW/m² …

This thesis investigated lever arm effects on distributed inertial measurement unit (IMU) array navigation and evaluated the performance of multiple fusion architectures with applications to uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). The Kalman Filters comprise of three filters: a naive baseline, a filter tracking lever arm as a filter state, and a filter constraining lever arm state estimates around known values. These filters feed into a virtual IMU fusing raw measurements and a federated filter combining output states. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process widely used for aluminum alloys in aerospace and structural applications due to its ability to produce high-quality joints without melting. The thermal history of the weld tool and surrounding material plays a critical role in governing material flow, microstructural evolution, and resulting mechanical properties. Interplanetary travel using chemical or electrical propulsion faces two major obstacles: the long mission timelines and the health risks to human crews from prolonged radiation exposure. Fusion propulsion offers a potential solution through high specific impulse and moderate thrust values. Z-pinch fusion, a pulsed magneto-inertial fusion approach, is promising for propulsion as the plasma is confined through current-driven compression, eliminating the need for external confinement coils to achieve ignition conditions, and the confinement configuration is simple. Alabama contains some of the highest levels of subterranean biodiversity in North America, yet no statewide assessment of cave vulnerability has previously been conducted. A spatially explicit vulnerability assessment was developed for Alabama caves using species occurrence records, landscape characteristics, anthropogenic threat data, and groundwater vulnerability metrics. Distribution maps were generated for cave- obligate and bat species, and vulnerability was assessed using human population, land- use, groundwater quality, groundwater quantity, and modified DRASTIK models. Results identified numerous single-site endemic species, regional biodiversity hotspots, and cave systems facing elevated anthropogenic threats. Lightning observations provide valuable insight into convective intensity, storm structure, and microphysical processes. Much of the current understanding of lightning-convection relationships is derived from ground-based very high frequency (VHF) measurements, while space-based optical observations remain comparatively new. This study investigates how storm charge structure and microphysics influence observed optical lightning emissions using coordinated observations from the 2017 GOES-R Post Launch Test campaign. Optical measurements from the Fly’s Eye Geostationary Lightning Mapper Simulator were combined with Lightning Mapping Array observations for ordinary multicell storms exhibiting a normal charge structure on 18 April 2017 and a supercell exhibiting an anomalous charge structure …

Biomedical instrumentation requires low-power amplifiers to maximize battery life. Due to threshold voltage limitations, standard gate-driven operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) require higher supply voltages. To overcome this, a differential bulk-driven two-stage OTA is introduced for low-power applications. The proposed topology is implemented in 65nm, 90nm, and 130nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS), with supply voltages ranging from 0.4V to 0.6V. Key metrics such as DC gain, gain-bandwidth product (GBWP), phase margin, common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR), slew rate, power, and noise are measured. The analysis confirms the robustness of the low-power solution provided by the proposed topology.

This work explores the potential benefits and practical feasibility of a rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) spacecraft thruster using water electrolysis for propellant generation. Such a thruster can enable the use of liquid water as an easily storable and chemically inert propellant, as well as the volume and efficiency benefits associated with detonation combustion. A thermodynamic model is first developed to demonstrate the compounding advantages of both water electrolysis propellant generation and detonation combustion when compared to conventional isobaric combustion cycles. Book banning has become a trigger phrase in the United States, and schools have become book-banning hubs. In the 2023–2024 school year, PEN America recorded 10,046 book bans. Among the most commonly banned books, 44% included people of color (BIPOC) and 39% included LGBTQ+ individuals (Meehan, Baêta, Markham, & Magnusson, 2024). Banning books harms marginalized youth because they will not see themselves in literature, causing them to have a distorted view of the world. Global decline among bumblebees shows strong evidence of phylogenetic structure, with the subgenus Pyrobombus over-represented among stable/range-expanding species. Based on this striking pattern, a hypothesis was drawn up suggesting that Pyrobombus species have acquired advantageous traits that enhance their survivability and dispersal compared to other subgenera. This hypothesis explores the possibility that these advantageous traits were acquired via the evolutionary process and are detectable as genomic signatures unique to the subgenus when compared with other subgenera.Twenty-four bumblebee species, representing all 15 subgenera and including 6 Pyrobombus species, were compared. Vast gender inequalities restrict women’s and girls’ access to ocean spaces, particularly in the tropical majority. Globally, 68% of women cannot swim, compared to 43% of men. In many coastal communities, women are key stewards of highly biodiverse yet vulnerable marine environments that people rely upon for food security, livelihoods, culture, and coastal protection. This thesis addresses a critical gap in the existing literature on the emotional well-being of parents of autistic children by applying SAFE family therapy activities grounded in the Narrative Attachment Therapy approach through a three-cycle action research design. Stage 1 involved 3 parents as primary participants, with their children present during selected sessions. Stage 2 included 2 families; the primary focus was on 3 parents across these families. Stage 3 engaged 5 therapists. Data were collected through interviews, diaries, questionnaires and therapy recordings. This study investigates the influence of organisational culture on individual readiness for change (IRFC) within the Kuwaiti banking sector. In a rapidly evolving economic landscape, where technological transformation, regulatory shifts, and heightened competition demand organisational adaptability, employee readiness becomes a critical success factor for implementing change initiatives. Drawing on Cameron and Quinn’s Competing Values Framework (CVF), this research examines the impact of four cultural typologies—Clan, Adhocracy, Market, and Hierarchy—on employees’ psychological and behavioural willingness to embrace organisational change.A quantitative, correlational design was adopted to assess how different organisational culture types affect IRFC.
