The Dynamics Of Near-Limit Detonation Waves For Hypersonic Propulsion, Liliana Berson Jan 2026

The Dynamics Of Near-Limit Detonation Waves For Hypersonic Propulsion, Liliana Berson

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The usage of detonation waves in hypersonic propulsion engines has seen substantial advancement in recent decades. The near-limit transition and failure process are key in these applications controlling the operability regime. The common cellular propagation of detonation waves fails in the near limit leading eventually to a singular transverse shock instability. The local dynamics of the wave causing this transition and the details of this singular instability remain a challenging question. These dynamics are examined in a fully automated detonation experiment using ultra-high-speed diagnostics and statistical analysis. Hydrocarbon fuel–oxidizer mixtures with nitrogen dilution are used to explore transition behavior over …

Investigation Of Exotic Phenomena In Topological Quantum Materials, Iftakhar Bin Elius Jan 2026

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

he First Quantum Revolution established quantum mechanics as the foundation of modern physics, enabling transformative technologies such as semiconductors, lasers, and transistors through prin-ciples of quantization, wave-particle duality, and uncertainty. The ongoing Second Quantum Rev-olution harnesses entanglement, superposition, and coherence to advance quantum computation, communication, simulation, and sensing. Central to this endeavor is the study of quantum mate-rials hosting novel electronic structures and emergent phases, including topological insulators and Dirac, Weyl, and nodal-line semimetals. In this thesis, using angle-resolved photoemission spec-troscopy (ARPES), transport measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we investigate three classes of materials: (i) magnetic topological semimetals, …

Essays On Politics And Ideology In Asset Management, Madison Borrelli Jan 2026

Essays On Politics And Ideology In Asset Management, Madison Borrelli

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

This dissertation examines how political influence and ideology shape the investment and governance decisions of institutional investors. My first essay studies the effects of political interference on public pension plan asset allocation. Plans facing investment restrictions shift away from low-cost traditional assets toward higher-fee, lower-performing alternative assets. While politicians advocating these restrictions receive increased media attention, state economies do not benefit. These findings underscore how political incentives create agency problems that adversely affect investment decisions and outcomes.

The second essay examines whether differences in political ideology between asset managers and investors give rise to conflicts of interest. Mutual fund institutions …

Motivational Interviewing Impact On Provider Burnout, Julie Cook Jan 2026

Motivational Interviewing Impact On Provider Burnout, Julie Cook

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The study of patient–provider communication rarely considers the impact of provider–patient dialogue on providers themselves. This dissertation explores why motivational interviewing (MI) has been shown to reduce burnout among health care providers who use it. Using the empathic communication model (ECM) as a lens, it examines possible explanations for how MI contributes to lower burnout in providers. A mixed‑methods approach was used, consisting of a survey‑based quantitative study and a qualitative study using semi‑structured interviews. The quantitative study surveyed physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Participants were asked questions assessing their knowledge of MI, the types of empathy they experience …

A Framework For Optimizing Creep Model Parameters From Conventional And Accelerated Creep Tests, William D. Day Jan 2026

A Framework For Optimizing Creep Model Parameters From Conventional And Accelerated Creep Tests, William D. Day

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The demand for efficiency in power generation and propulsion requires higher firing temperatures and reduced cooling air consumption which raises metal temperatures. This makes simplistic creep evaluations, such as Larson-Miller and Orr-Sherby-Dorn parameters, inadequate. Finite element analysis (FEA) must simulate primary and secondary creep, predict failure, and provide design guidance. Gas turbine components, expected to last over 100,000 hours, often require extrapolation of limited test data for new materials. It is essential that robust creep simulations be developed efficiently, accurately, and effectively use limited test data.

This dissertation describes an optimized framework for efficient creep testing and rapid construction of …

Two Essays On Geopolitical Risk And Investment Decisions, Jie Hu Jan 2026

Two Essays On Geopolitical Risk And Investment Decisions, Jie Hu

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

My first essay studies how global institutional investors adjust cross-country equity allocations in response to rising geopolitical risk. Using quarterly equity holdings of institutional investors over 1997–2023, combined with news-based global and country-specific geopolitical risk indices, I find that following increases in geopolitical risk within a country, foreign institutions actively reduce their allocations in that country and the nearby region. Elevated global geopolitical uncertainty triggers both a flight-to-home response toward domestic equities and a flight-to-safety effect toward U.S. equities. Investor responses are heterogeneous: Institutions with higher geopolitical risk sensitivity respond more aggressively, whereas larger or better-performing hedge funds often maintain …
