Commentary: Characteristics Of African-American Leadership, Wornie L. Reed
Commentary: Characteristics Of African-American Leadership, Wornie L. Reed
Trotter Review
Discussions about the progress of African-Americans frequently involve discussions about the nature and strength of black leadership and leadership roles. Increasingly such discussions contend that with the growth and diversification of the African-American community there can be no one leader for a black America — if there ever was such a thing. Rather various individuals at different places and at different times are the leaders among African-Americans. As these arguments develop it may be useful to examine the nature of leadership in general and the historical patterns of African-American leadership in particular.
Saint Vincent De Paul: A Creative Reconciler, Margaret John Kelly D.C.
Saint Vincent De Paul: A Creative Reconciler, Margaret John Kelly D.C.
Vincentian Heritage Journal
Vatican II emphasized the need for Catholics and Catholic religious communities to focus on their beginnings (their primitive spirit). Margaret John Kelly uses this imperative to show how the roots of “the modern charities movement” are found in the work and leadership of Vincent de Paul. She explains why it is important to remember Vincent. The many parallels between his time and Church and our own are discussed, as is his relevance. Kelly calls him “a creative reconciler” because he was able to harness competing interests and make them work together in concrete ways for the service of the poor. …

The Boardroom: Still A Fraternity?, Dell Mitchell

Boards of directors of corporations may represent the last fraternity at the top of the economic power structure. Although they represent an important pool of candidates, highly qualified women are grossly underrepresented on such boards. This article describes the strategy behind the ongoing effort in New England to position women for appointment as corporate directors.

An Expression Of Gratitude To Saint Louise De Marillac, Margaret Flinton D.C.

On the 350th anniversary of the founding of the Company of the Daughters of Charity, the American Daughters held Vincentian heritage workshops, reflecting on Louise de Marillac’s contributions to the Company’s establishment and endurance. Margaret Flinton explains the most important ones in detail. These are Louise’s efforts to have the Daughters permanently put under the direction of the superior general of the Congregation; her placement of the Daughters under Mary’s protection; the way Louise educated and led them, preparing them spiritually and professionally; how she collaborated with Vincent de Paul; her concept of a community life that would support the …

Editor's Corner: Ethnic Studies Leadership?, George E. Carter
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
NAIES and its journal, Explorations in Ethnic Studies, from their inception have tried to address the question of leadership within Ethnic Studies. A quick survey from a national perspective leaves one with a fear that no one is providing much in the way of leadership. The same situation seems to prevail at the state and local levels. Yet, more and more prominence is given to the multiethnic makeup and experience of American society. There is an obvious inconsistency involved in this situation. Why is there no national policy on ethnic studies or on the crucial issues facing American society generated …

Michigan Law Review
It has been my uniform practice never to read from a manuscript or use notes when I am speaking to an audience, but in speaking of so old and dear a friend I feel a certain inhibition of emotion that stands in the way of an adequate oral speech. Moreover, when I think of Dean Bates' unswerving adherence to exact, accurate statement, his abhorrence of all exaggeration, of all overstatement, I feel that he would not be satisfied with one who followed the relatively loose method of oral statement instead of adhering to a carefully and meticulously prepared manuscript for …

The original faculty consisted of that remarkable trio, James V. Campbell, Charles I. Walker and Thomas M. Cooley. Instruction was given by lecture, and almost continuously for twenty-five years those three continued to expound the principles of the law to the students who flocked to the school.
Leadership-Training In Our Church, P. E. Kretzmann
Leadership-Training In Our Church, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
Leadership is the quality, or attribute, by which men or women occupy prominent or influential positions and exercise guidance, or direction, with respect to others. This quality, or attribute, presupposes and involves, in the first place, certain natural or inherent traits. In a very special sense it is true that leaders are born, not made.
