Women’S “Empowerment” In The Bangladesh Garment Industry Through Labor Organizing, Chaumtoli Huq

By critiquing empowerment in international development discourse and reconceptualizing it, the article shows how Bangladeshi garment workers have used the trade union space to achieve socio-economic empowerment despite barriers to labor organizing. Further, it argues for the development of working class women’s leadership.

Gender Stereotypes Of Leaders: Do They Influence Leadership In Higher Education?, Margaret Madden
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This article reviews social psychological and organizational development literature on gender stereotypes and leadership style and effectiveness and explores its relevance for leadership in higher education. Implications of the dichotomous stereotypes of “friendly vs. competent” and “agentic vs. communal” frame a discussion of social psychological research on how stereotypes affect perceptions of leaders. Ways to overcome stereotypes and the application of feminist values to leadership strategies are also discussed.

For African nations “independence” from colonial rule seemed a long-awaited time that would re-establish and/ or introduce democracy. In 1962 Uganda embraced “independence” from colonial rule with both arms. However, practices of poor governance, increased political instability and economic uncertainties slowly and steadily eroded women’s hard work which sustained the nation during the regimes of Idi Amin (1971-79) and Obote II (1980-84). When Uganda finally returned to democratic systems of government, quotas were reserved for women without any acknowledgement of women’s previous participation both in private and public spaces. This paper examines the career of Grace Onyango in a bid to recover the history of independent Kenya’s most prominent female politician. To find success as a politician, Onyango had to have an understanding of the interplay between her ethnic culture, the cultures of those with whom she interacted as well as the dynamics of newly independent Kenya’s local and national politics.

Paul van der Veur is the executive producer/editor of the four part video series, Acceptance: Living With HIV/AIDS. As a former Peace Corp volunteer, Paul is involved in many facets of international programs. Paul recently returned from a 5-month trip to Namibia where he interviewed women living with HIV/AIDS in a four-part series production, Acceptance: Living With HIV/AIDS. A Puppet On A String: The Manipulation And Nationalization Of The Female Body In The “Female Circumcision Crisis” Of Colonial Kenya, Sara Boulanger

In pre-colonial Kenya, women shared power and ownership, and conducted many important social and cultural ceremonies, in particular initiation. But with Britain’s colonial takeover of Kenya at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the steadily growing power of colonial rulers and growing status of missionaries, came a total restructuring of society’s gendered norms. By the 1920s, Christianity had created a divide among Kikuyu-speaking people in colonial Kenya over several issues. Women continue to aspire for leadership positions in all spheres of governance in both the public and private sector. However it has not been easy. The paper will examine the many challenges women still face in taking leadership positions with specific reference to African women. Included in the paper are the barriers related to culture and cultural expectations, the choice and/or balance between work and family, and women’s own fear of success.

Accessing Housing Finance In South Africa: The Role Of Women Activism, Catherine Ndinda, Ufo Okeke-Uzodike

Women’s history in South Africa is replete with examples of exclusion, discrimination, and marginalization. The transition to democracy in 1994 and inclusion of gender equality in the post-apartheid constitution in 1996 were seen as steps in the right direction towards addressing women’s oppression and creating gender equity in accessing housing finance. The subsequent formulation of policies and institutions meant to achieve gender equality put women’s concerns in the public domain. However women’s access to capital and housing finance in particular remain challenges in accessing improved housing.
