Enabling Community And Trust: Shared Leadership For Collective Creativity, Mohammed Mohammed, Kurian Thomas Dec 2014

Enabling Community And Trust: Shared Leadership For Collective Creativity, Mohammed Mohammed, Kurian Thomas

The Foundation Review

The strength of nonprofit organizations comes from well-developed human connections that spur productive collaboration across levels of hierarchy. This article, exploring the experience of the Fetzer Institute, demonstrates that workplace creativity is best fostered if it is matched by a style of leadership that invites a wider spectrum of internal actors to actively participate.

While acknowledging the significance of shared leadership, this article does not necessarily advocate for the dissolution of hierarchy; rather, it points out that the key lies in finding the sweet spot between organizational structure and a creative community.

The article describes tools that are particularly effective …

We present the results of a phenomenological, qualitative research study in which 13 Southern Baptist (SB) pastors were administered in-depth interviews. The sample was selected from a total of 37 exemplars, identified in the quantitative component of a larger mixed-methods study, regarding the pastors’ perspectives toward relational connection in pastoral ministry. Three themes emerged from the data regarding relational connection in pastoral ministry. First, pastors indicated the need to be intentional about pastoral connection. Finally, the participants related that pastors should give particular attention …

The Role Of Leadership In Creating A Strategic Climate For Evidence-Based Practice Implementation And Sustainment In Systems And Organizations, Gregory A. Aarons, Mark G. Ehrhart, Lauren R. Farahnak, Marisa Sklar

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

There is a growing impetus to effectively implement evidence-based practices (EBPs) in health and allied health settings in order to improve the public health impact of such practices. To support implementation and sustainment of EBPs, it is important to consider that health care is delivered within the outer context of public health systems and the inner context of health care organizations and work groups (3). This article identifies two relevant types of leadership for implementation and recommends steps that leaders can take in developing a strategic climate for EBP implementation and sustainment within the outer and inner contexts of health …

Religious Education Leadership And The 21st Century: Overcoming Disconnectedness, Michael T. Buchanan Oct 2014

Religious Education Leadership And The 21st Century: Overcoming Disconnectedness, Michael T. Buchanan

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

The role of the religious education leader is a relatively new role within Catholic education in Australia. This leadership position has evolved since the time of its emergence in the decades following Vatican II; however, there appears to be a lack of clarity and understanding about the role and its impact upon a school. While the religious education leader plays a significant role in building a school community, a recent study which sought to discover the kinds of support these leaders need found that many religious education leaders encountered experiences of disconnectedness in their own school communities. Drawing on the …

Building Sustainable Leadership In Multicultural South African Catholic Schools, Mark Potterton, Cullen Mackenzie

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

The article recognises that with the current malaise in schooling in South Africa, there is a need for strong, inspiring leadership that is able to bring about systemic change by talking to the ‘minds and hearts’ of people. One of the most notable results of the program has been that …

Is Servant Leadership Inherently Christian?, Andrey V. Shirin Oct 2014

Is Servant Leadership Inherently Christian?, Andrey V. Shirin

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Servant leadership has gained broad currency among Christians of various persuasions. At the same time, surprisingly little consideration is given to cultural assumptions behind servant leadership, particularly to the meaning of service in question. The paper will examine these assumptions in light of Christian tradition as reflected in works of St. Augustine. The paper will argue that, while there are some affinities between traditional Christian spirituality and servant leadership as commonly understood, this should not lead us to conclude that the latter is an outgrowth of the former. While an Augustinian theology of leadership will inevitably have a robust service …

A New Officer For A New Army: The Leadership Of Major Hugh J.C. Peirs In The Great War, Marco Z. Dracopoli May 2014

A New Officer For A New Army: The Leadership Of Major Hugh J.C. Peirs In The Great War, Marco Z. Dracopoli

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

World War One brought dramatic changes to the officer corps of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) fighting on the Western Front. The heavy casualties sustained meant that mass mobilization at home had to take place in order to replace combat losses. As a result, the previously small, but professional British army was forced to transition into a large citizen-soldier army. This new force required not just new officers, but an entirely new leadership model. The formation and exercise of this new style of leadership is examined through the letters of Major John Hugh Chevalier Peirs, executive officer and later commander …

Perfect Timing: The Rise Of Women’S Political Leadership During Cultural Shifts, Christie E. Pearce

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

America has fallen behind in women's leadership, especially in politics. In the approaching era, there will be more viable female political candidates than ever in the past, but will the public be prepared to elect a woman to high office? Studies suggest that mentalities toward female leadership have taken a shift in a positive direction. The idea of what an 'ideal' politician must offer is more feminine in the modern era than ever before. In the age of social media, female politicians have opportunities to reach more constituents through social media in a more effective way than has been offered …

What Leadership Development Institutes Can Never Teach College Presidents About Leadership, Livingston Alexander Mar 2014

What Leadership Development Institutes Can Never Teach College Presidents About Leadership, Livingston Alexander

International Journal of Leadership and Change

While most new presidents of colleges and universities advance to the presidency through a traditional academic pathway, an increasing number of new presidents are now coming from positions outside of higher education. Yet, regardless of how they come to the position, many new presidents are unprepared for the complex challenges they will encounter when they take on their new assignments. A large number assume that participation in professional development seminars, often promoted as institutes for new presidents, will provide the essential algorithm for a successful presidency. Operating on such an assumption may well turn out to be a fatal mistake. …

Frédéric Ozanam: Systemic Thinking, And Systemic Change, Raymond L. Sickinger Ph.D.

The organizational model and processes of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul …

Understanding Leadership: An Experimental-Experiential Model, George T. Hole Ph.D Feb 2014

Understanding Leadership: An Experimental-Experiential Model, George T. Hole Ph.D

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

Books about leadership are dangerous to readers who fantasize about being leaders or apply leadership ideas as if they were proven formulas. As an antidote, I offer an experimental framework in which any leadership-management model can be tested to gain experiential understanding of the model. As a result one can gain reality-based insights about leadership and oneself. The experiment is described; resistances to engaging it are considered; and examples from a leadership group implementing Covey’s “Seven Principles are summarized. In the course of discussing individual’s experiments objections were voiced against this Socratic approach to understanding leadership. Finally, I sketch a …

The Will To Lead: The Dynamic Integration Of Intrinsic Motivation And Social Change Leadership, Joshua M. Garrin

Journal of Sustainable Social Change

Discourse on the psychosocial substrates of human motivation reflects a hot-button theme in contemporary leadership research circles. For many aspiring leaders, role models and social support provide an undercurrent for instilling leadership attributes. Yet for others, the drive to optimize leadership potentials is a naturally occurring, internally guided event that is continually reinforced through self-regulatory processes. As such, questions remain as to which intrinsic motives underpin the leadership potentials that have implications for social change agency. To date, the extant literature fails to offer a comprehensive model that highlights (a) the self-motives that have preeminent applicability to intrinsic motivation, (b) …

Clark utilized written communication, global travel and organization to re-shape the global Protestant church’s ministry to young people through the Christian Endeavor Society. Second, it tells the story of the growth of Christian Endeavor under the leadership of Clark. While some books and papers have some sections about Christian Endeavor, none really address …
