Recuperation Of Regenerative Braking Energy In Electric Rail Transit Systems, Mahdiyeh Khodaparastan
Dissertations and Theses
Electric rail transit systems are large consumers of energy. In trains with regenerative braking capability, a fraction of the energy used to power a train is regenerated during braking. This regenerated energy, if not properly captured, is typically dumped in the form of heat to avoid overvoltage. Finding a way to recuperate regenerative braking energy can result in substantial economic as well as technical benefits. Regenerative braking energy can be effectively recuperated using wayside energy storage, reversible substations, or hybrid storage/reversible substation systems. In this research study, we compare these recuperation techniques and investigate their application in New York City …

Dissertations and Theses
Power Grids are one of the most intricate systems and greatly affect economic, political, and social aspects of contemporary life. A well-operated power system consists of many control devices and protection methods to prevent the interruption of power to consumers. However, such systems are highly vulnerable to severe events; for instance, natural disasters, cyber-attacks, mal-function of control devices, etc. The occurrence of these odd events may lead to cascading failures, which are prominent contributors to blackouts.
This paper focuses on the development of a cascade model in a distribution network using Newton-Raphson’s power flow method to study the impact of …

The future electrical system termed as smart grid represents a significant paradigm shift for power industry. Nowadays, microgrids are becoming smarter with the integration of renewable energy resources (RESs) , diesel generators , energy storage systems (ESS), and plug-in electric vehicles (PEV or EV) . However, these integration bring with new challenges for intelligent management systems. The classical power generation approaches can no longer be applied to a microgrid with unpredictable renewable energy resources. To relive these problem, a proper power system optimization and a suitable coordination strategy are needed to balance the supply and demand. This thesis presents three …

Distributed Machine Learning Approach To Fast Frequency Response-Based Inertia Estimation In Low Inertia Grids, Abodh Poudyal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent updates to the IEEE 1547-2018 standard allow active participation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in power grid services with the goal of increased grid reliability and resiliency. With the rapid growth of DERs towards a low inertia converter-dominated grid, the DERs can provide fast frequency response (FFR) services that can quickly counteract the change in system frequency through inertial support. However, in low voltage grids, frequency and voltage face dynamics coupling due to a high resistance to reactance ratio and cannot be controlled separately as in the bulk electric grid. Due to the coupling effect, the control of one …

Permanent Magnet Linear Generators (PMLG) are electric generators which convert the linear motion into electricity. One of the applications of the PMLG system is with free piston engines. Here, the piston is moved by the expander using an internal combustion engine or a Stirling engine. Other applications of the PMLG are wave energy conversion, micro energy harvesters, and supercritical CO2 expander systems. The most common technology of the electric generators is a rotary electric generator. The current technology of the engine-generators (GENSET) is of a rotary type which uses a crankshaft to convert the linear motion to rotary motion …

Phase-Locked Loop Control In Low-Inertia Grid-Connected Voltage-Source Converters, Ifechukwude Gideon Odogwu
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
As the integration of renewable energy on the grid increases, the number of voltage-source converters (VSC) installed also does. VSC controls both switch turn-on and turn-off, allowing a dc voltage source to be switched between phases. For the converter to accurately synchronize with the grid, a phase-locked loop (PLL) is used for the frequency measurements of the grid. However, the implementation of PLL with measurement delay introduces harmonics, noise, high frequency, and voltage oscillation to the system due to its dynamics. The dynamics introduced to the grid can be ignored under stiff grid conditions, but power from renewable sources decreases …

Design And Development Of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor For Detecting Of Hydrogen Gas In Transformer Oil, Mohd Raffi Samsudin
Student Works (2020-2029)
Hermetically sealed oil-immersed transformers are the key to electricity distribution networks. They are also one of the most expensive facilities in the electricity supply network. Immediate replacement is expected for this type of transformer upon failure because it is directly connected to the customer. Transformer oil acts as insulation, coolant and condition indicator. To date, there is no economical real-time monitoring system available to monitor the transformer oil condition. Therefore, there is a need to develop a cheap, non-intrusive and non-electrical sensor to monitor the health of the transformer by measuring the amount of dissolved hydrogen gas in oil, which …

Impact Of Grid-Following And Grid-Forming Ders On Resilient Operation Of Holonic Grid, Ali M. Alsenan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates how different distributed energy resources (DERs) impact the resilience operation of a holonic grid. The holonic grid consists of two or more connected microgrids and /or provisional microgrids (PMGs). The type of the DER, i.e., grid-forming or grid-following, affects the operations of the holonic grid, particularly during the islanded mode. To study this emerging and timely topic, a resilience-oriented holonic grid optimal operation model is proposed. This model carefully formulates the operations of both grid-forming and grid-following DERs. A variable value of lost load (VoLL) is further employed in the proposed model to help quantify and monetize …

Controlling power-electronic converters in power systems has significantly gained more attention due to the rapid penetration of alternative energy sources. This growth in the depth of penetration also poses a threat to the frequency stability of modern power systems. Photovoltaic and wind power systems utilizing power-electronic converters without physical rotating masses, unlike traditional power generations, provide low inertia, resulting in frequency instability. Different research has developed the control aspects of power-electronic converters, offering many control strategies for different operation modes and enhancing the inertia of converter-based systems. The precise control algorithm that can improve the inertial response of converter-based systems …

To improve the power consumption of parallel applications at the runtime, modern processors provide frequency scaling and power limiting capabilities. In this work, a runtime strategy is proposed to distribute a given power allocation among the cluster nodes assigned to the application while balancing their performance change. The strategy operates in a timeslice-based manner to estimate the current application performance and power usage per node followed by power redistribution across the nodes. Experiments, performed on four nodes (112 cores) of a modern computing platform interconnected with Infiniband showed that even a significant power budget reduction of 20% may result in …

Thermoelectrics is a green renewable energy technology which can significantly contribute to power generation due to its potential in generating electricity out of waste heat. The main challenge for the development of thermoelectrics is its low conversion efficiency. One key strategy to improve conversion efficiency is reducing the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials. In this paper, the state-of-the-art progresses made in improving thermoelectric materials are reviewed and discussed, focusing on phononic engineering via applying porous templates and ALD deposited nanolaminates structure. The effect of nanolaminates structure and porous templates on Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, and hence in …

A new method combining in-situ real-time spectroscopic ellipsometry and optical modeling to optimize the thickness of an anti-reflective (AR) coating for Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells is described and applied directly to fabricate devices. The model is based on transfer matrix theory with input from the accurate measurement of complex dielectric function spectra and thickness of each layer in the solar cell by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The AR coating thickness is optimized in real time to optically enhance device performance with varying thickness and properties of the constituent layers. Among the parameters studied, we notably demonstrate how changes in thickness of …
