Student Works (2020-2029)
This main goal of this research is investigating the interfacial energy level of organic semiconducting devices by correlated to the devices performance as well as physical/chemical change in the blended/mixed organic semiconductor system. The first project reported the high efficiency extra warm white organic light emitting diodes (WOLEDs) by blending tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine (TcTa) to poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK). The hole current for PVK:TcTa (60:40) increased by one order of magnitude in hole only device, but the current efficiency of WOLEDs improved only by 7% compared to pristine PVK. Using Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), it was discovered the hole injection barrier between poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene …

The advances of metal oxide semiconductor technology (MOS) have led to smaller devices being made where sizes of the devices keep getting smaller and compact. Hence, all the components of metal oxide semiconductor sizes are to be reduced without affecting the overall efficiency of the metal oxide semiconductor. However, there is a problem in the silicon dioxide component of MOS as the sizes of the silicon oxide (SiO2) reduces, there is a possibility a current leakage to occur due to carrier direct tunneling effect passing through SiO2 which reduce the efficiency of the MOS. Therefore, a higher dielectric constant material …

Modern cyber-physical systems are enabled by electronic hardware and embedded systems. The security of these sub-components is a concern during the design and operational phases of cyber-physical system life cycles. Compromised electronics can result in mission-critical failures, unauthorized access, and other severe consequences. As systems become more complex and feature greater connectivity, system owners must make decisions regarding how to mitigate risks and ensure resilience and trust. This paper provides an overview of research efforts related to assessing and managing risks, resilience, and trust with an emphasis on electronic hardware and embedded systems. The research takes a decision-oriented perspective, drawing …

Reciprocity is a fundamental physical principle that roots in the time-reversal symmetry of physical laws. It allows making predictions on any arbitrary complex system's response and operation and hence simplifies the analysis. However, there are many practical situations in which it is advantageous to break reciprocity, e.g., isolators preventing wave scattering back to lasers and generators, full-duplex systems for multiplexing transmission and receiving in the same channel, nonreciprocal cavity excitation, and protection of fragile states of superconductor quantum computers from thermal noise. The most widespread approach to time-reversal symmetry breaking and nonreciprocity based on magnetic field biasing suffers from bulkiness, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wide Bandgap (WBG) semiconductors like Silicon Carbide (SiC), Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Aluminum Gallium Nitride (AlGaN) have superior material properties as compared to Silicon (Si) like higher electrical breakdown voltages and bandgap energies as well as lower leakage currents as compared to Si which make them ideal to operate at higher voltage with lower thermal losses. These properties make WBG materials ideal for power devices like Vertical Double-diffused Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (VDMOSFETs). The use of digital prototyping through computer simulation increases the speed and flexibility of the design iterations while reducing the cost and time required for …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This thesis is focused on advancing embroidered wearable electronics and textile electronics by creating open-source flexible resistors. Advancements in textile electronics could usher a new generation of smart devices that are entirely flexible. Current systems on cloth primarily use rigid components, which limits the flexibility and comfort of using the fabric devices. To advance this field, I propose a novel method of creating flexible electrical resistors with embroidery. To realize this technology, I created an open-source tool to create embroidery files for machine fabrication. This thesis details the methods and tools created for resistor fabrication. The resistors were tested to …

We report the incorporation of substitutional Mn atoms in high-quality, epitaxial graphene on Cu(111), using ultralow-energy ion implantation. We characterize in detail the atomic structure of substitutional Mn in a single carbon vacancy and quantify its concentration. In particular, we are able to determine the position of substitutional Mn atoms with respect to the Moiré superstructure (i.e., local graphene-Cu stacking symmetry) and to the carbon sublattice; in the out-of-plane direction, substitutional Mn atoms are found to be slightly displaced toward the Cu surface, that is, effectively underneath the graphene layer. Regarding electronic properties, we show that graphene doped with substitutional …

Since the dawning of the industrial revolution, the world has had a need for mass energy production. In the 1950s silicon solar panels were invented. Silicon solar panels have been the main source of solar energy production. They have set the standard for power conversion efficiency for subsequent generations of photovoltaic technology. Solar panels utilize light’s ability to generate an electron hole pair. By creating a PN Junction in the photovoltaic semiconductor, the electron and hole are directed in opposing layers of the solar panel generating the electric current. Second generation solar panels utilized different thin film materials to fabricate …

Localized chemical delivery plays an essential role in the fundamental information transfers within biological systems. Thus, the ability to mimic the natural chemical signal modulation would provide significant contributions to understand the functional signaling pathway of biological cells and develop new prosthetic devices for neurological disorders. In this paper, we demonstrate a light-controlled hydrogel platform that can be used for localized chemical delivery in a high spatial resolution. By utilizing the photothermal behavior of graphene-hydrogel composites confined within micron-sized fluidic channels, patterned light illumination creates the parallel and independent actuation of chemical release in a group of fluidic ports. The article describes the design of filters on surface acoustic waves (SAWs), which are selective elements and are widely used in blocks, devices and signal processing systems in telecommunications, including wireless communication systems such as cellular, trunking and others. Designs of filters for surfactants are considered, which are divided into two large groups - by functional purpose and by a systematic approach to the synthesis of performance characteristics of filters for surfactants. Optimization algorithms and methods for synthesizing surfactant filters have been developed and improved. An improved technique for the synthesis of a filter based on surface acoustic waves is …

Semiconductor packaging and development is greatly dependent on the magnitude of interconnect and on-chip stress that ultimately limits the reliability of electronic components. Thermomechanical related strains occur because of the coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch from different conjoined materials being assembled to manufacture a device. To curb the effect of thermal expansion mismatch between conjoined parts, studies have been done in integrating compliant structures between dies, solder balls, and substrates. Initial studies have enabled the design and manufacturing of these structures using a photolithography approach which involves a high number of fabrication steps depending on the complexity of the structures …
