Integration Of Algae And Biomass Processes To Synthesize Renewable Bioproducts For The Circular Economy, Jessica Martin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rapid population growth and global industrialization have substantially heightened the demand for fossil-based fuels and products in various sectors of the global economy, including energy production, transportation fuels, and as raw materials for petrochemicals. The intense consumption of fossil fuels has caused immense environmental impacts, especially pertaining to carbon dioxide emissions. Shifting to renewable feedstocks (raw materials) is expected to reduce these emissions by lowering the carbon footprint of fuels and products compared to traditional fossil-derived alternatives. This transition aligns with the goal of creating a sustainable and circular economy, emphasizing efficient resource use, and reducing waste generation through recycling …

Carbonate Precipitation Behavior In Co2 Mea Electrolyzers With Cu Electrocatalyst, John C. Hendershot

LSU Master's Theses

Annually, over 35 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) are emitted into Earth’s atmosphere. The accumulated CO2 emissions in the atmosphere over the last century drive climate change. CO2 electroreduction (CO2ER) is an emerging technology that aims to recycle carbon emissions from the industrial sector by using CO2, H2O, and electricity as a feedstock to produce ethylene (C2H4) at current densities as high as 1 A cm-2 and Faradaic efficiencies (FE) of 60%. However, CO2 electrolyzers currently demonstrate poor durability at industrially relevant …

Induction Heating Driven Heterogeneous Catalysis: Magnetically Induced Nanoparticle Catalysts, Cameron Lee Roman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Heterogeneous catalysis has been and continues to be highly studied due to being one of the cornerstones of the chemical industry. With an increasing demand for chemicals and rising costs, there is a growing need to adapt to changing feed stocks and increase production efficiency. Polymers, oxygenates, and other chemical intermediates are predicted to experience continued growth, corresponding to an increased need for olefines. Due to the abundance of shale gas, researchers and producers are interested in meeting this demand via the dehydrogenation of light alkanes.

While dehydrogenation catalysts are a valuable tool in olefin production, selectivity and deactivation remain …

A Consortium Of Microalgae And Wastewater Activated Sludge To Generate Biohydrogen, Muhammad Asad Javed 2023 United Arab Emirates University

A Consortium Of Microalgae And Wastewater Activated Sludge To Generate Biohydrogen, Muhammad Asad Javed

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Hydrogen is a clean source and carbon-free source of energy that can be generated photobiologically using green microalgae with 122 kJ/g of energy output which is 2.75 times that of hydrocarbon-based fuels. However, challenges, such as presence of molecular oxygen (O2) within the cells, hinder their practical application. Molecular O2, emanating from the activity of photosynthesis, acts as a powerful and effective switch that turns off bioH2 production activity. The objective of this research is to develop an innovative approach to increase the yield and sustain bioH2 photoproduction. For this purpose, a consortium of microalgae and wastewater activated sludge (WWAS) …

Comparative Evaluation Of Investigation Methods For Estimating The Load-Dependent State Of Charge And End Of Discharge Of A Multirotor Uav Battery, Hanna Dibbern, Morten Roßberg, Claudia Werner

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

As the scope of multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications increases, more attention is being paid to UAV energy requirements, which vary depending on the mission profile. To obtain accurate information about the UAV battery during flight, the idea of a digital twin including a battery state estimation model is promising. For battery state estimation, a Kalman filter combination is the preferred approach in the literature. Comparing different Kalman filters, the unscented Kalman filter has a more accurate estimation for nonlinear systems compared to the extended Kalman filter. In the application of UAV flight with load-dependent flight missions, the comparison …

Stereoscopic-Based Mass Properties Estimation For Warhead Fragments, Alessia Nocerino, Katharine Larsen, Riccardo Bevilacqua, Elisabetta L. Jerome

Student Works

FRAGMENTATION characteristics such as spatial distribution, number of fragments, fragment velocity, and fragment mass can be used to characterize the lethality of a fragmenting weapon or any metal cased explosive [1,2]. However, most warhead tests and evaluations are limited to static arena testing, where fragment characteristics must be collected by hand. Recently, stereoscopic imaging techniques have been added to static arena tests. Using this method, position tracks can be collected for each fragment, and then velocity information can be found. This paper proposes a method to estimate the mass and moment of inertia using data collected by a stereoscopic imaging …

Climate change has adversely affected maize productivity. Thereby, a holistic understanding of metabolic crosstalk among its organs is important to address this issue. Thus, we reconstructed the first multi-organ maize metabolicmodel, iZMA6517, and contextualized itwith heat and cold stress transcriptomics data using expression distributed reaction flux measurement (EXTREAM) algorithm. Furthermore, implementing metabolic bottleneck analysis on contextualized models revealed differences between these stresses. While both stresses had reducing power bottlenecks, heat stress had additional energy generation bottlenecks. We also performed thermodynamic driving force analysis, revealing thermodynamics-reducing power-energy generation axis dictating the nature of temperature stress responses. Thus, a temperaturetolerant maize ideotype can …

The spinning disk technology has previously been utilized to isolate bacterial components from blood in hours instead of days. We hypothesized that this platform could be applied as an alternative approach to isolating plasma RNA from a whole blood sample. We consequently tested the efficacy of the spinning disk technology to extract plasma from whole blood upstream of RNA isolation and analysis. To do so, we collected plasma using either the spinning disk or the typical two-spin centrifuge method. We found that the spinning disk method results in significantly more hemolysis during collection than the conventional two-spin centrifuge method. However, …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oil and gas extraction has become challenging nowadays due to the accompanying amount of excess produced water that results in poor recoverability of hydrocarbon, besides other environmental and economic isues. A recent and efficient technology for conformance control is the injection of preformed particle gels (PPGs), which results in a more practical production process. Nevertheless, existing treatments fail in high-temperature reservoirs, are extremely sensitive to salinity, and are hazardous. The characteristics of the designed PPG, such as mechanical strength and thermal durability, is mainly depend on their crosslinking method. Polysaccharides-based gels prepared by physical crosslinking are weaker than the ones …

Linear and nonlinear optical line shapes reveal details of excitonic structure in polymer semiconductors. We implement absorption, photoluminescence, and transient absorption spectroscopies in DPP-DTT, an electron push−pull copolymer, to explore the relationship between their spectral line shapes and chain conformation, deduced from resonance Raman spectroscopy and from ab initio calculations. The viscosity of precursor polymer solutions before film casting displays a transition that suggests gel formation above a critical concentration. Upon crossing this viscosity deflection concentration, the line shape analysis of the absorption spectra within a photophysical aggregate model reveals a gradual increase in interchain excitonic coupling. We also observe …
