Chemical Technology, Control and Management

An ultrasonic generator was used in the Soxhlet extractor. To evaluate the process, the solvent flow was examined. The influence of the flow time in the Soxhlet on the process was analyzed. The formula for the residence time of streaming particles in the apparatus is given. A standardized volume curve V was formed. The time required for the solvent to remain in the apparatus is important during the extraction process. The description of the structure of flows of mass metabolic processes also means that it allows you to determine the movement and distribution of substances in these flows. Therefore, we …

Algorithms For Synthesis Of Discrete Controllers In Nonlinear Control Systems With Delay, Alisher Rajabaliyevich Mallayev, Suban Nurullayevich Xusanov

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

Algorithms for the synthesis of discrete controllers in nonlinear control systems, taking into account the delay, have been proposed. The synthesized vector controller provides a solution to the control problem, for example, the translation of the image point of a closed system from arbitrary initial conditions to the origin of the phase space coordinates. Built on the basis of a series-parallel set of invariant manifolds, the dynamic discrete controller ensures the fulfillment of the specified technological requirements, the asymptotic stability of a closed discrete-continuous system, and has the property of predicting the behavior of the system after sampling. These algorithms …

Taking into account the above, the article considers mathematical models of the principles of eliminating …

Bimetallic Catalyst For Lignin Depolymerization, Qishen Lyu 2021 Washington University in St. Louis

Bimetallic Catalyst For Lignin Depolymerization, Qishen Lyu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is motivated by concerns regarding the need to develop more sustainable and economic technologies to meet rising global manufacturing and energy demands. These concerns have renewed governmental, industrial, and societal determination to reduce the world’s dependence on conventional natural resources and has led to considerable research on producing fuels and chemicals from feedstocks other than petroleum. Lignocellulosic biomass represents an abundant and renewable resource that could displace petroleum feedstock producing biofuels and multiple valuable chemical products with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Lignin is the second abundant biopolymer source in nature and is found almost everywhere. Since the 1950’s, …

Pyrolysis Kinetics Of Wildland Vegetation Using Model-Fitting Methods, Ellie Amini, Mohammad-Saeed Safdari, Nathan Johnson Brigham, David R. Weise, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Slow-heating pyrolysis experiments of 14 plant species native to forests in the southern United States were conducted in a TGA to find the kinetic parameters for slow pyrolysis of all live and air-dried plant samples. Kinetic coefficients were determined from the data using model-fitting methods, resulting in single kinetic parameters for the entire pyrolysis process which can be used by wildland fire modelers. The model forms explored here are a simple one-step model and single and multiple reaction distributed activation energy (DAE) models. The mass loss and derivative mass loss data were fitted simultaneously at heating rates of 10, 20, …

Resolving Anodic Current And Temperature Distributions In A Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolysis Cell Using A Pseudo-Two-Phase Computational Fluid Dynamics Model, J. Lopata, Z. Kang, J. Young, G. Bender, J. W. Weidner, H-S. Cho, Sirivatch Shimpalee

Faculty Publications

Expanding upon our prior experimental work, we constructed a three-dimensional model of a polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzer using computational fluid dynamics. We applied the assumption of pseudo-two-phase flow, the flow of two phases with equal velocity. Experimental data were used to obtain parameters and to determine the conditions under which this model was valid. Anodic distributions of current density, temperature, liquid saturation, and relative humidity were obtained at various flow rates. The overall current density and temperature difference from inlet to outlet at the anode agreed strongly with experimental measurements under most circumstances. This verification allowed us to further …

Feedback Control Of Particle Positions Using Electric Fields And Chemical Gradients, Mark McDonald 2021 Brigham Young University

Feedback Control Of Particle Positions Using Electric Fields And Chemical Gradients, Mark Mcdonald

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Programmable self-assembly is a promising route to new biomaterial and metamaterial synthesis methods. An important step towards programmable self-assembly is moving component parts to desired locations. We do this by designing and simulating a controller that modifies an external field to move particles on desired paths. We first design a controller using electric fields by modifying established methods, then we apply the insights gained from the electric field controller to a chemical controller that uses model predictive control.

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Due to population growth and economic development, there has been an increase in global wastewater (WW) generation footprint. There are different technologies associated with the wastewater treatment (WWT) process. The challenge is to select technologies that minimize the cost of treatment, as well as meet purity requirements. Further, there is a need to integrate sustainability analysis to facilitate a holistic decision. With the application of systems engineering, sustainable and cost-effective solutions can be achieved. In this work, we apply systems engineering to generate a sustainable and cost-effective solution. A superstructure was generated by categorizing technologies into four treatment stages. After …

Exploration Of The Sludge Biodiesel Pathway, Zachary Christman 2021 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Exploration Of The Sludge Biodiesel Pathway, Zachary Christman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Wastewater sludge is an overlooked source of fat, oil, and grease (FOG) that could be converted into biodiesel. The United States produces about 8 million tons of sludge per year. The disposal cost for this amount of sludge is about 2 billion US dollars. The widespread availability and low cost of sludge compared to other biodiesel raw materials make it an economical choice for a renewable fuel. Using sludge as a raw material can produce 25 to 30 mg per gram of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME); the main component of biodiesel. Sludge biodiesel has the potential of transforming a …

Valorization Of Secondary Agriculture Residues, Narendra Kumar 2021 Louisiana Tech University

Valorization Of Secondary Agriculture Residues, Narendra Kumar

Master's Theses

Secondary agriculture residues have the potential to be major contributors as resources for energy and sustainably sourced materials production. Separating secondary agricultural residues, which have already been transported to processing centers, into individual biomass components could convert these wastes into bioproducts. Many types of pretreatments to achieve this separation involve chemicals that are hazardous for the environment. Several deep eutectic solvents (DES) that are biocompatible have been investigated for their ability to deconstruct rice hulls and sugarcane bagasse. Mass yield, enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated biomass, fiber analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy have confirmed that the DES formic acid:choline …

Settling Of Spherical Particles In High Viscosity Friction Reducer Fracture Fluids, Ghith Biheri, Abdulmohsin Imqam 2021 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Settling Of Spherical Particles In High Viscosity Friction Reducer Fracture Fluids, Ghith Biheri, Abdulmohsin Imqam

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Investigating the key factors that impact fluid rheology and proppant static settling velocity in high viscosity friction reducers (HVFRs) is a critical aspect for successful proppant transport in hydraulic fracture treatment. In this study, the rheological properties of HVFRs were tested at various temperature ranges (i.e., 25, 50, 75, and 100◦C) and different HVFR concentrations (i.e., 1, 2, 4, and 8 gpt). Three sizes of spherical particle diameters (i.e., 2, 4, and 6 mm) were selected to measure the static settling velocity. The fracture fluid was tested in two fracture models: an unconfined glass model and a confined rectangular model …
