Jack Kleinsinger presents Highlights in Jazz. The concert was held at The Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Thursday, May 13th, 2010 at 8:00 pm. Jack served as producer and master of ceremonies for the series of concerts. Artists for the concert include Billy Taylor, Chip Jackson, Winard Harper, Gene Bertoncini, Harvie, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, Vinnie Knight, Sol Yaged, Jon-Erik Kellso, Dan Block, and surprise guest Roni Ben-Hur.

The Involvement Of The Special Needs Student In The Competitive Field Of Marching Band In Virginia, John Mark Campbell

This study investigated the involvement of special needs students in competitive high school marching bands in Virginia. 159 members of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors who taught high school level band were emailed a survey. Fifty-seven directors chose to participate, which yielded a return rate of 35.8%. The survey examined demographics, classification, participation requirements, special needs participation and individual disabilities. The study concluded that the majority of Virginia marching bands include students with special needs. The research discovered that twelve of the thirteen categories of special needs, as defined by IDEA, were represented in Virginia marching bands. Analyses of …

Literature, websites, and research abound with statistics that support the non-musical benefits of a musical education. Among these non-musical benefits are skills and habits that are the subject of a similar number of business management materials, public speakers, and business-centered books devoted to developing and demonstrating personal leadership. Research concerning the process for developing these in the public schools is limited, and in regard to music programs, even more rare. The purpose of this thesis is to examine Howard Hanson's composition, Dies Natalis for Band, from both an analytical and an educational perspective. To accomplish this objective, research on Hanson's personal and professional development as a composer, teacher, advocator, and otherwise contributor to the field of music was executed, information on and within Dies Natalis for Band was investigated, and suggestions were made for educational techniques to employ when teaching this composition. The author suggests that more analysis using Hanson's own theoretical system on intervallic relationships may yield additional information on his thought processes in composition. This thesis will explore analytical and educational domains of The Sacred Harp by David Liptak. Influenced by the history and compositional techniques of shape note singing, the composition is a tribute to the past and current Sacred Harp singing conventions nationwide and the exuberance expressed within the shape note tradition. The structure and unique style of The Sacred Harp will be examined within the history of shape note singing. This thesis will investigate "The Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves" by David Bedford with consideration given to analysis of the work itself, historical perspectives, and educational conceptions. The work was commissioned by the Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music with additional financial assistance provided by the Hinrichsen foundation. Composed between June and August of 1982, this is the first piece by Bedford in the wind band medium. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of preservice elementary education classroom teachers toward teaching music and the importance of music in the school curriculum as they prepare to enter the field in an era of high stakes testing, state standards, and accountability. More specifically, responses to twenty-nine statements were used to determine attitudes toward the following three constructs: (a) academic and social benefits of music education, (b) inclusion of music in the curriculum, and (c) comfort in teaching and leading music in the classroom. Adult Motivations In Community Orchestra Participation: A Pilot Case Study Of The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (New Jersey), Carol Shansky

The purpose of this study was to explore the motivations of adults in choosing to participate in community orchestras. This paper identifies many of those motivations and examines the reasons and implications of why the adults in the study chose to continue to play in community orchestras. The investigation was conducted in 2007 via a case study of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, a community orchestra located in Northern New Jersey. The adults selected for interview were members of the orchestra. The focus of this paper is self-reflection on teaching using video. The excerpts that are used in this paper are taken from the emails of pre-service music teachers at Illinois State University completing their required clinical hours with instrumental students at both the middle school and high school level. Though these teaching episodes were eventually evaluated by the instructor in the areas of teacher presence, classroom management, lesson planning, teaching method, pacing, error detection, pedagogy and assessment, the pre-service teachers received no specific guidelines on how to focus their first reflective comments. The purpose of this study is to determine if music and academic achievement are connected to form a more cohesive unit of learning. This project attempts to show how participation in a music program in school will not only help children explore new academic experiences but will also help in their academic achievment through improvement in test scores in mathematics and languages.

Research & Issues in Music Education

These written documents remind me that Dr. Turrentine’s scholarship led to strong teaching. He had a keen ability to combine his knowledge of general and music history, music education pedagogy, research techniques and “real life” in each of his courses. These last two elements were especially evident in his graduate bibliography course, taught before the advent of the Internet, and are among the chief memories held by several generations of his former students.
