Eighty-six music educators completed a 51 item questionnaire. Results showed that music teachers' attitudes and perceptions are generally positive toward inclusion. Mean scores for attitude and perception were not influenced by whether participants had or had not taken a course in special education as a student, whether they had access to continuing education regarding inclusion through their school district, or participants' predominant teaching area or degree …

Instruction Of Hearing Impaired Students In School Instrumental Music Programs, Rachel Strong

Honors Theses

This study utilized a survey that was sent to every director in the state. The survey contained several questions pertaining to whether directors had ever had a hearing impaired student in their ensembles before, what accommodations were made for those …

Music, Personhood, And Eudaimonia: Implications For Educative And Ethical Music Education, David J. Elliott, Marissa Silverman 2014 Montclair State University

Music, Personhood, And Eudaimonia: Implications For Educative And Ethical Music Education, David J. Elliott, Marissa Silverman

John J. Cali School of Music Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper proposes that educative and ethical music making and teaching, which is based on a praxial philosophy of music education (Elliott and Silverman, 2014), can be carried out in a variety of ways that create places and spaces, in schools and community settings, for a variety of human values or "goods" that include, but go beyond, making and listening to classical instrumental music, or any other kind of music, for "the music itself." One premise of this philosophical discussion is that music does not have one value; music has numerous values, depending on the ways in which it is …

A Proleptic Perspective Of Music Education, Brent C. Talbot 2014 Gettysburg College

A Proleptic Perspective Of Music Education, Brent C. Talbot

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

By explaining the cultural mechanism of 'prolepsis' through examples of my own teaching, I posit that all too often educators' and teacher educators' (purely 'ideal') recall of our pasts and imagination of our students' futures become fundamentally materialized constraints on our students' life experiences in the present.

Choosing A Master's Degree Program In Piano Pedagogy, Angela Meyers

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

In addition to program catalogues and the internet, other resources are also valuable in choosing a school. Talk to faculty members, colleagues, and those in your school and teaching community for recommendations. Do you know other students who have enrolled in a master's program in piano pedagogy? Certainly do not limit yourself to one resource, but rather use each resource as a catalyst to get your search rolling.

Music Class Offerings Beyond Bands, Choirs, And Orchestras In Nebraska High Schools, David N. Sanderson 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Music Class Offerings Beyond Bands, Choirs, And Orchestras In Nebraska High Schools, David N. Sanderson

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

As school music programs in the US evolve and adapt to changing demographics, the types of music courses offered have expanded as well. Today, schools offer more courses in music than just bands, choirs, and orchestras. Music appreciation courses, music technology courses, music theory courses, guitar classes, piano classes, and music composition classes are just a few of the types of music classes that can also be found in American high schools. While high school music class options are becoming more diversified, there has been little research done to profile what kinds of music classes are being offered in schools …

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Classical Guitar Music in Printed Collections is a new, open-access, online index to the contents of published score collections for classical guitar. Its interlinked, alphabetized lists allow one to find a composition by title or composer, to discover what score collections include that piece, to see what other works are included in each collection identified, and to locate a copy in a library collection. Accuracy of identification is guaranteed by incipit images of each work. The article discusses how this index differs from existing bibliographies of the classical guitar literature, its structure and design, and technical details of its publication.

Your Guide On Learning How To Play The Piano, Jankiben Patel 2014 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Your Guide On Learning How To Play The Piano, Jankiben Patel

Senior Theses

I’ve had a strong desire to learn how to play a piano ever since my first music class in elementary school. I asked my parents if I could receive piano lessons. They saw how extremely excited I was and they agreed to seek out a piano instructor for me. Unfortunately, my parents soon realized that they simply could not afford the fees. I brought up the topic a few more times, but to no avail. In middle school, I joined the band to play the clarinet. Although my hopes of playing the piano were put on hold, I grasped this …

Global Music Perspectives: Music Outside The Western Canon In Local Schools, Jane A. Best, John F. Grimsley, Alan C. Heise, Lauren M. Mascioli, Samantha F. Moroney, Lauren A. Satterfield, Emily I. Zeller

Celebration

As a class, we are designing a research project for investigating how music teachers from counties in South-Central Pennsylvania use music from outside the Western canon (i.e. "world music"). We are performing a qualitative study by interviewing k-12 music teachers from school districts in South-Central Pennsylvania. Teachers may choose to participate in a focus group interview with other teachers or in one-on-one interviews. The focus group interview will not exceed two hours and the one-on-one interviews will not exceed an hour. The interviews will be guided using a questionnaire (see attached), but the conversation may deviate from these questions at …

Student And Teacher Experiences With Informal Learning In A School Music Classroom: An Action Research Study, Mark C. Adams 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Student And Teacher Experiences With Informal Learning In A School Music Classroom: An Action Research Study, Mark C. Adams

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Despite the ubiquitous nature of music in the lives of adolescents, school music education rarely offers experiences with the informal music making practices that are used by their favorite vernacular artists. This action research study implemented informal learning practices into the formal learning environment of my current teaching position in a rural Midwestern community, to understand more about student experiences and the educator’s role in such a classroom. The qualitative research approach used in this study borrowed from grounded theory techniques. Data collection included twenty-five total interviews with nine first-year beginning instrumentalists. Interviews were conducted in three waves, where the …

The Process Of Musicking: An Alternative To Melodic Dictation And Other Activities Involved In The Undergraduate Music Program, Tanya Krof 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Process Of Musicking: An Alternative To Melodic Dictation And Other Activities Involved In The Undergraduate Music Program, Tanya Krof

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

This thesis makes the claim that the current American undergraduate music institution does not effectively integrate the skills learned in aural skills courses; as a result, too few students are engaged in the learning process and fail to master the required skills. One common activity used in aural skills courses is melodic dictation, an activity which asks students to notate a performed melody. While activating a multitude of useful skills, melodic dictation could cause a cognitive overload due to demanding too many tasks to be performed simultaneously. A suggestion of implementing Musicking activities—which emphasize music as a process (an act), …
