An “Idyll” is defined as a happy, peaceful, or picturesque scene. The term references poetry that describes a small intimate world, and scenes from everyday life.

This exhibition, Idylls, showcases the little world of my home here in Lincoln, Nebraska. The paintings mirror my experience of the domestic spaces in my life, and the peaceful moments I encounter. In Idylls you are encouraged to be idle. We do ourselves a disservice when we don’t take the time to slow down.

This collection contains framed prints created by local artist Larry K. Martin. Martin is a native of Alabama and holds a Ph.D. from Tulane University. He pursued a career in tropical medicine, having researched at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and in the field in the Amazon rainforests of Colombia and Brazil. He eventually began to work in wildlife conservation, and was the curator of the Anniston Museum of Natural History. He began painting circa 1976, primarily using soft acrylics. My work explores fantasy and mythological archetypes. The exhibition features works on paper depicting mermaids, and a fountain featuring two figures submerged in water, one spitting into the other's mouth. I use black ink and glazes to create variegated surfaces. In these works, I reimagine ideas about power and intimacy.

Detritus and the Icon highlights the relationship between the figure and the monument, contrasting between the gravity of earth and the lightness of the Divine. My thesis exhibition of seven paintings, comprised of thirty seven panels, brings the banal into conversation with the age old endeavor of monument building.

My work presents interiors through the guise of memory while focusing on the sentimental objects within them. Through metaphors and signs I give form to certain events, sensations and out-of-perspective observations. Painting is a recording of my current psychology, and a window through which I can visualize my inner self. My painting won't make my anxiety go away, but it will allow me to work with my emotion and put it in a specific place, so it doesn't control my life.

Theses and Dissertations

Dante Cannatella’s work is about when the landscape reclaims the city, when the lines between inside and outside are blurred, and how lives play out against the truth of uncertainty and impermanence. His gestural paintings reflect growing up amidst the destruction and rebuilding of New Orleans. Set against a backdrop of acid yellows, muddy pinks and greys, the figures are caught in the powerful forces of nature, commerce, and mass thought that shape both their inner worlds and outer realities.

Jake Reed’s work is driven by the idea that architectural ornament can be imbued with meaning not native to its construction or use. To find that meaning, he deconstructs and reassembles elements from the architectural and ornamental histories he studies, using the growing climate crisis as a generative framework.

Conceptions of Flight is a thematic invitational group exhibition. The artwork exhibited here reveals a diverse and individual engagement with the theme. Some of the featured artists interpret flight as a rising up; a moving forward; a breaking free from struggle. Others have captured the thrill and wonder of travel; of the movement of clouds; of building new wings, mythopoetically. Whatever the interpretation, Conceptions of Flight provides an arresting look at the ways this age-old preoccupation continues to move the imagination and stretch the limits of our reach.

Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

Mathematics and art are seemingly unrelated fields, requiring different skills and mindsets. Indeed, these disciplines may be difficult to understand for those not immersed in the field. Through art, math can be more relatable and understandable, and with math, art can be imbued with a different kind of order and structure. This project explores the intersection and integration of math and art, and culminates in a physical interdisciplinary product.
