The act of cutting is to sever, to divide an object or even an idea into separate parts of its original state. Non-tangibles can also in a sense be ‘cut’, like gaps in memories or modifications of beliefs or ideas. My work encompasses these definitions of cutting. Working mostly from photos, I use imagery from personal experience, such as meat from my hunting experience, patterns from nostalgic blankets, or photos of people in my life. Other times, I choose imagery simply because I feel compelled to paint it, or it feels somehow needed within the composition. My process begins by …

I address emotions and perceptions that are complex and multifaceted. My goal is for the work to communicate these emotions in a way that makes them accessible to others. Most people have felt disconnected, longing, anticipation, relief, anger, frustration and have experienced internal conflict. While this work touches on these emotions, there is, because of who I am, a set of questions I am asking regarding racial identity.

Taking In

Taking In is a student run project featuring a selection of work created by students attending the Art Institute of Boston. The project focuses on the business of promoting art and culminates each year with a juried exhibition, publication, and website all designed to promote selected works of AIB artists. The selected pieces were chosen anonymously by a jury of distinguished members of the Boston art community to represent the best of AIB Photography, 2010. The writer discusses the collaboration between California artist Sam Hernández and the Moreno León family from Extremadura, Spain, who create tinajas, monumental ceramic storage vessels. While Hernández approached this collaboration with admiration for the elegance of the traditional tinaja, and respect for the Moreno León ceramists, the innovation in superimposing his own images led to a totally new set of sculptures that, though linked to his earlier oeuvre, are markedly different from it. By recontextualizing the tinaja into a contemporary narrative through the overlay of his chosen subject matter, he shifted the collaboration into a new territory, as, at the …

The article focuses on a library home page that is designed from the artist-librarian perspective. It cites the need to include promotional features on a page to advertise resources available from the Web site and sponsored events. It notes that the application of the basic principles of art such as emphasis, harmony and movement is important for a successful composition of the page. Also stated is the use of color on a home page which, according to the author, can result in a page that is vibrant while supportive of the delivery of information.
