My Life As An Art Soldier In Mao's China: Art And Politics, Shaomin Li

The author narrates how in Mao's China his personal experience took unexpected turns when China dramatically transformed politically, economically, and culturally, and how in reacting to these overwhelming changes he evolved from the role of artist to student activist, businessman, political prisoner and academic. The article focuses on the relationship between art and politics in Mao's China and how the two evolved into what the author characterizes as "market communism" in today’s China.

The first documented Native American art on paper includes the following drawings at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska: In the Winter, 1833-1834 (two versions) by Sih-Chida (Yellow Feather) and Mato-Tope Battling a Cheyenne Chief with a Hatchet (1834) by Mato-Tope (Four Bears) as well as an untitled drawing not previously attributed to the latter. These images were produced and collected during the winter of 1833-1834 when the German Prince Maximilian of Wied and artist Karl Bodmer resided at Fort Clark in North Dakota. Astronomy is becoming a forgotten science, which is evident by its relatively low enrollment figures compared to biology, chemistry, and physics. A portable inflatable planetarium brings relevance back to astronomy and offers support to students and educators by simulating realistic astronomical environments. This study sought to determine if learning is improved in an inflatable planetarium by adhering to the design principles of the cognitive theory of multimedia learning (CTML), specifically the coherence principle, in an authentic classroom. Two groups of 5th grade students of similar ability were purposefully assigned using a 1-teacher-to-many-students format with mean lesson lengths of 34 minutes. …

This thesis frames the significance of traditional textile hand production as a means of furthering the concept of aesthetic socio-cultural development. It approaches the traditional textile crafts in relation to the proposition that contemporary society is post-traditional and has broken away from nature. By examining the concept of tradition and the processes by which society transforms from the pre-modern context into the late modern, the changing nature of the crafts is explained. The research also examines wider social losses, gains and unforeseen consequences that occur in the continuous process of social transformation. This mechanism was developed out of the increasing requirement for individual users to be able to adjust the height of their desk to an ergonomically correct position for their physicality. Sitting at a standard height desk (usually 720-740mm) for long durations has been linked to health problems, including back and posture problems and DVT, for those who fall either side of the average user in terms of anthropometric height range. These works are a reminder of the steps that brought us to where we are now and what we may become. They portray the emotional transformation of an individual as they mature with age as well as life experience, illustrating how beautiful and frightening this process can be. The works function similarly to inkblot tests, where the viewer's psyche makes them see what they want to see. These images evoke memories of personal events that are meant to cause the viewer to have a nostalgic emotional experience.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how acculturation strategies relate to self-reported ratings of self-efficacy for international counseling students. Acculturation strategy usage may provide an important insight into the self-efficacy estimates of international students. Forty-three participants were recruited via e-mail from counseling programs within the United States. Participants were briefly instructed regarding the online completion of a demographic questionnaire, the Abbreviated Multidimensional Acculturation Scale ([AMAS-ZABB] Zea, Asner-Self, Birman, & Buki, 2003), and the Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory ([COSE] Larson et al., 1992). Thirty-four participants completed the AMAS-ZABB and thirty-one participants completed the COSE. Findings revealed the most common acculturation …

The effective properties of cellular materials are dependent both on the fixed material properties of the constituent material and the geometry of the cellular structure. As a result, the effective properties can be altered through geometric modifications without changes to the constituent material. Cellular materials present new opportunities in mechanical design due to the ability to produce new materials with customized properties which can improve the performance of existing designs. However, the task of designing the geometry to achieve desired properties presents additional challenges to the design process.
