Systemic Facilitation For Execution In Process-Centered Living Labs, Hannah Kang, Yong-Ki Lee
IASDR Conference Series
Civic participatory design is widely practiced as a means of engaging communities in addressing complex public challenges (Sanders & Stappers, 2008; Wacnik, Daly, & Verma, 2024). However, a persistent gap remains between participatory ideation and actual implementation (Teal et al., 2022). This study addresses that gap by introducing a systematic facilitation framework with systemic orientation, which guides participants from exploration to execution readiness. Through a ten-session civic Living Lab designed as a real-world participatory setting involving residents, parents, and officials, focused on school route safety in South Korea, the study tested the use of intentionally sequenced facilitation tools referred to …

The Bidirectional Relationship Between Behavioural Guidance Design And User Behaviour Habits: Implications For Sustainable Packaging, Xinyi Luo, Qiyun Deng, Qing Huang, Yunyun Wang, Jiangyong Li
IASDR Conference Series
Current sustainable food packaging often emphasises material innovation at the expense of user behaviours role across the life cycle, creating a “sustainability paradox” where environmental gains are offset by behavioural misalignment. This study employs behavioural design theory in a two-stage investigation to examine how packaging design shapes user behaviour. Field research at Xiangtan Universitys snack street identified user challenges for four food packaging categories: ready-to-eat dry food, ready-to-eat wet food, non-ready-to-eat dry food, and non-ready-to-eat wet food, and corresponding behaviours were extracted for each type of food packaging. In Stage 2, two comparative experiments (traditional packaging versus design-guided intervention) involved …

IASDR Conference Series
The discussion on CST-based design education essentially reflects a critical stance toward the conventional use of the CST concept. The development of CST design education emerged as a response to the long-standing limitations of computational thinking (CT), with “CT and CST-based design education” historically forming the foundation of what the academic community has defined as creativity support tools. Today, with the advent of generative AI (GenAI), the genuine realization of CST appears increasingly attainable. The shift in focus from CT to CST design education stems from the latter’s embodiment of more definitive CST characteristics. This paper contributes by tracing the …

Open-Ended Empathy: A Design Philosophy Grounded In Relation And Responsiveness, Megumi Sumi
IASDR Conference Series
This study proposes an ontological redefinition of empathy in design practice. Empathy has been conventionally framed as a cognitive means for understanding users, often through techniques such as observation and interviews. In contrast, this study reconceptualizes empathy as a mode of being that emerges within relationships—including those involving more-than-human entities such as nature and things. This reconceptualization is termed “open-ended empathy,” which is grounded in bodily and ethical responsiveness that unfolds in being-with others, opening together into mutual transformation. Grounded in phenomenology and Japanese philosophy, the study analyzes a co-design practice conducted with university students in the context of a …

The Algorithmic Gift Of Error: Ai Hallucination As A Catalyst For Speculative Futures And Design Methodology, Liang Xiao, Yuqi Liu, Ye Zhang, Mi Chen
IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, generative artificial intelligence has been widely adopted in design and creative practices. However, its tendency to produce “hallucinations”—outputs characterized by illogical ity, bias, or factual inaccuracy—is often regarded as a system flaw. From the perspective of speculative design, which aims not to solve problems but to destabilize assumptions, such generative disruptions can serve as potent catalysts for reimagining futures. This paper re-evaluates the creative potential of AI hallucination through the methodological lens of speculative fiction and design. It outlines three distinct hallucination mechanisms: strategic hallucination, stochastic hallucination, and systemized serendipity. These are illustrated through three case studies—In …
