Institutional Co-Design For Nishijin Jacquard Weaving: Digital Mediation Across A Networked Craft Field, Kaori Ueda, Roth Bine

IASDR Conference Series

Nishijin weaving is one of Japan’s most renowned traditional textile practices, originating over 560 years ago when weaving artisans regrouped in Kyoto’s Nishijin district. Since then, its techniques have been continuously inherited and adapted through successive cycles of transformation and decline. Japan’s traditional dyeing and weaving industries, exemplified by Nishijin, are characterised by a hybrid positioning between craft and industry, supported by a historically distributed division of labour. This system, while fostering deep expertise, faces stagnation due to institutional disconnects. This paper addresses this challenge by advancing Institutional Co-Design (ICD) as a two-part mechanism that couples digital mediation with co-ordination …

From Projecting Futures To Projecting Otherwise: An Anticipatory Archaeology Of Emerging Design Epistemologies, Marc Chataigner

IASDR Conference Series

How to overcome design ‘defuturing’ effects? Design scholarship argues that design’s adverse contributions stem from its limited projective capacities to reflect about what design designs and the inherent power structures it conceals. Several design approaches emerged to equip designers with philosophical and social science frameworks and overcome design’s ‘defuturing’ effects. Yet, the ability of these theoretical frameworks to fundamentally change design remains debated. This paper contributes to this discussion by exploring the epistemological underpinnings of five approaches – Transition Design, Mission-Oriented Design, Speculative Design, Pluriversal Design, and More-Than- Human Design. We develop an ‘anticipatory archaeology’ of these theoretical formations to …

IASDR Conference Series

Silence in team collaboration is often viewed as a challenge, as it can indicate either a lack of engagement or moments of deep thinking. This inherent ambiguity can leave team members uncertain about how to interpret and respond. Although previous studies have associated silence with some passive behaviors in design collaboration, the nuanced role of silence during thinking shifts remains insufficiently explored. Building on the six thinking hats, this study confirmed the relationship between silence and thinking shifts and identified specific types of silence corresponding to four distinct shifts of thinking hats. Qualitative analysis further revealed the roles of different …

Interaction Augmentation: Deepening User Experience To Build Placeness, Seongsu Choi, Seok Young Hwang, Jungmin Kim, Kicheol Pak

IASDR Conference Series

Various forms of interaction derived from nonverbal behaviors of products contribute to delivering positive experiences in human-product interactions. For a product to be integrated into human experiences more closely, it must incorporate aspects of the spatial environment in which it is placed. Although numerous previous studies have suggested that expanded experiences extending from the product to the surrounding space play a crucial role in the formation of placeness, place attachment, and behavioral intentions, the structured pathways and the clarities of how product interaction contributes to placemaking remain under explored. This study aims to structure and elucidate whether and how a …

Understanding Coach–Learner Interaction In Fitness Training For Next-Generation Wearables, Yewon Kim, Jisu Park, Tek-Jin Nam

IASDR Conference Series

Understanding interaction between the coach and learner is pivotal in fitness training, yet most fitness technologies emphasize functional metrics over the dynamics of human interaction. To inform the design of more interaction-aware wearable coaching systems, we examined how instructional exchanges unfold during squat training, an activity that requires frequent feedback. We conducted a two-phase interview study involving eight professional coaches and eight adult learners. Through hybrid thematic analysis, we identified two complementary types of cues: action-oriented cues, which specify how to move, and sensation-oriented cues, which direct the learner’s attention to internal bodily sensations. These cues are delivered through verbal, …
