Hampton Beachfront And Storm Protection Management Plan, 2011 William & Mary
Hampton Beachfront And Storm Protection Management Plan, Waterway Surveys & Engineering, Ltd., Virginia Institute Of Marine Science, Urs
Reports
Beach and water fronting property are a major asset to any community. These properties, whether public or private, are typically associated with the highest real estate values, as well as the greatest recreational or “quality of life” benefits. Living along the shoreline, however, offers its challenges in terms of susceptibility to damages and flooding resulting from coastal storms. Therefore, it is in the community‟s best interest from both an economic, as well as an aesthetic perspective, to preserve and maintain its beachfront assets through comprehensive management planning. The primary goal for beach management planning along the Hampton shoreline is to …
Review Of The River Returns: An Environmental History Of The Bow. By Christopher Armstrong, Matthew Evenden, And H.V. Nelles., 2011 University of Northern British Columbia
Review Of The River Returns: An Environmental History Of The Bow. By Christopher Armstrong, Matthew Evenden, And H.V. Nelles., Ted Binnema, David Vogt
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
This book should be read more as a collection of essays on a wide variety of topics related to the Bow River than as a monograph. Each of its thirteen chapters examines an aspect of the history of human interactions with the river, ranging from ranching, forestry, hydroelectricity, and irrigation to urban sanitation, recreational fishing, flooding, and park building. The Bow River is amenable to a discussion of such diverse themes. Its headwaters are among the glaciers of the Rocky Mountains in Banff National Park, but it also flows through the ranching country of the foothills, the major urban center …

Review Of A Dry Oasis: Institutional Adaptation To Climate On The Canadian Plains. Edited By Gregory P. Marchildon., Siân Mooney
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
A Dry Oasis examines past and potential future climate challenges on the Canadian Plains. The book provides extensive discussion, data, and analysis of challenges related to water supply and management within the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB). Past challenges, experiences, and institutional responses are described and used to frame possible future adaptation pathways under expected future climate change. The book provides an excellent grounding in the historical settlement and development of the SSRB, paying particular attention to the ways that the economy, society, and institutions have adapted in response to climatic variability.
Estimation Of Land Surface Evapotranspiration With A Satellite Remote Sensing Procedure, 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Estimation Of Land Surface Evapotranspiration With A Satellite Remote Sensing Procedure, Ayse Kilic, Ian Ratcliffe, Pariskhit Ranade, Kenneth Hubbard, Ramesh K. Singh, Babuarao Kamble, Jeppe Kjaersgaard
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
There are various methods available for estimating magnitude and trends of evapotranspiration. Bowen ratio energy balance system and eddy correlation techniques offer powerful alternatives for measuring land surface evapotranspiration. In spite of the elegance, high accuracy, and theoretical attractions of these techniques for measuring evapotranspiration, their practical use over large areas can be limited due to the number of sites needed and the related expense. Application of evapotranspiration mapping from satellite measurements can overcome the limitations. The objective of this study was to utilize the METRICTM (Mapping Evapotranspiration at High Resolution using Internalized Calibration) model in Great Plains environmental …

Transformation Of Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine (Rdx) By Permanganate, 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The chemical oxidant permanganate (MnO4−) has been shown to effectively transform hexa-hydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) at both the laboratory and fieldscales. We treated RDX with MnO4− with the objective of quantifying the effects of pH and temperature on destruction kinetics and determining reaction rates. A nitrogen mass balance and the distribution of reaction products were used to provide insight into reaction mechanisms. Kinetic experiments (at pH ~7, 25 °C) verifiedthat RDX−MnO4− reaction was first-order with respect to MnO4− and initial RDX concentration (second-order rate: 4.2 × 10−5 M−1 s−1). …

A variety of models have been developed for estimating chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration in turbid and productive waters. All are based on optical information in a few spectral bands in the red and near-infra-red regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength locations in the models used were meticulously tuned to provide the highest sensitivity to the presence of Chl-a and minimal sensitivity to other constituents in water. But the caveat in these models is the need for recurrent parameterization and calibration due to changes in the biophysical characteristics of water based on the location and/or time of the year. In this …
Hydrological Impacts Of Integrated Oil Mallee Farming Systems, 2011 Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Western Australia
Hydrological Impacts Of Integrated Oil Mallee Farming Systems, D L. Bennett, John Andrew Simons, Russell Speed
Resource management technical reports
This study reports on the results from investigations at four sites into the effect of commercial-scale oil mallee systems on localised groundwater systems over seven years. It also reports the results of the use of a numerical model to forecast potential longer term impacts.
Wheat Yield Potential And Land Management Constraints In The South West Of Western Australia, 2011 Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Western Australia
Wheat Yield Potential And Land Management Constraints In The South West Of Western Australia, Dennis Van Gool
Resource management technical reports
This report provides the underpinning information to help improve the long term profitability of wheat cropping. It documents the realistic potential yield of the 18 million hectares of agricultural land in the South West of Western Australia and the gap between this potential and the actual yields, based on shire averages. This report also summarises major land management constraints that limit the yield potential. This information can be used to aid strategic planning at different levels, for example state, shire and, with care, as a starting point for farm planning.
Marine Corps Base, Quantico Shoreline Protection Plan, 2011 William & Mary
Marine Corps Base, Quantico Shoreline Protection Plan, C. Scott Hardaway Jr.
Reports
One goal of this management plan is to provide more habitat-friendly management strategies which utilize the creation of marshes and beaches for shore protection rather than hardening the coast. Many of these strategies have been implemented around the Bay. These approaches include creating a marsh fringe by direct planting of the existing substrate, adding sand, and adding sand with stone sills. On more open coasts, breakwaters and beach fills can be built to achieve a stable sandy habitat of beaches and dunes. These “Living Shoreline” strategies can, if properly designed and constructed, provide shore protection as well as create a …
