Abstract:

This research paper explores some of the earliest known evidences of dental treatment and traveled through time discussing important figures who made vital contributions toward the development of this profession.

Dentistry is one of the oldest professions to be developed. Ever since there have been humans, there have been problems with our teeth, and we have been figuring out ways to alleviate them. The idea that there were people specializing in the healing of the teeth and oral diseases has roots to ancient pre-history and a long and fascinating saga.

This history is divided into five stages:

-Ancient pre-history …

The therapeutic potential of cannabis has been harnessed for thousands of years yet the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has still not approved cannabis as a safe or effective drug. The FDA has, however, approved the manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs, which contain a “synthetic version of a substance that is present in the marijuana” and other compounds that mimic its action. A search of the US National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health for keywords “CBD” and “Periodontitis” together yields only 2 publications. Although the current State and Federal regulations on the use of cannabis for …

A Nondestructive Procedure For The Extraction Of Dna From Human Teeth, Mark Reliquias, Ann-Elodie Black 2020 University of Mississippi

A Nondestructive Procedure For The Extraction Of Dna From Human Teeth, Mark Reliquias, Ann-Elodie Black

Honors Theses

This research focuses on constructing a procedure that allows for the nondestructive extraction of mtDNA from teeth for forensic DNA analysis. Currently, only a destructive method for extracting DNA from teeth is used in the forensic laboratory to identify an individual. A disadvantage of extracting DNA through a destructive method is the complete or partial loss of the tooth. To extract DNA through a destructive method, the tooth must either be cut horizontally or vertically to access the pulp, or the root ground into a powder to extract DNA from the dentine-cementum. With the destruction of the tooth, additional forensic …

Factors Which Influence The Education Of Local Anesthesia In Dental Hygiene, Angela D. Cook, Angela D. Cook

Dental Hygiene ETDs

ABSTRACT Dental hygienists, like most students, learn according to formal curriculum that is defined by goals, competencies, and required subject matter for examinations.1 They also learn through an intense socialization process known as “the hidden curriculum”. The “hidden curriculum” is not defined in student textbooks nor classroom lectures, but is demonstrated through case studies, research, and an experience shared between colleagues.1 The purpose of this study was to assess the determining factors that influence what dental hygiene instructors are teaching hygiene students on the use of articaine when administering dental blocks, and to assess if the “hidden curriculum” …

Replacing A Single Tooth: Single Implant Vs. Three Unit Bridge, Ibeth Erazo, Aneeza Hussain 2020 CUNY New York City College of Technology

Replacing A Single Tooth: Single Implant Vs. Three Unit Bridge, Ibeth Erazo, Aneeza Hussain

Publications and Research

There are more than two options for restoring a single tooth but our research includes a three-unit bridge and a single-tooth implant as the main options. In this paper, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and the factors that must be considered when choosing between them for the replacement of a single tooth. Although in some cases a three-unit bridge is the most appropriate choice, implants have the advantage of allowing preservation of the integrity of sound teeth adjacent to the edentulous area. Many factors must be considered when choosing between a three-unit bridge and an implant …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) is the measure of ones propensity to fall asleep during normal daily activities. It has been reported in 20%-50% of adults in the United States and is the most frequent symptom of patients presenting to sleep clinics. EDS is the result of both primary hypersomnias such as narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia and, more commonly, secondary hypersomnias such as sleep deprivation, psychiatric conditions, medications, illegal substances, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The etiology of OSA is multifactorial. Collapsibility of the upper airway is influenced by both neuromuscular tone and craniofacial anatomy. Common predisposing factors for small airways …

The aim of this study is to gather and analyze data representing detailed changes in model and cephalometric variables that will support clinicians in the premolar extraction decision- making process during camouflage treatment of class II dental patients. It is expected that the models, as measured by intra-arch dimensions, overjet, overbite, and mandibular crowding, and cephalometric radiographs, evaluated by their anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy, incisor inclinations, dental and skeletal vertical positions, and soft tissue characteristics, will significantly differ from within the same treatment group, pre-treatment to post-treatment, and between treatment groups. This retrospective study evaluated the model and cephalometric changes in …

Comparison Of Heat Generated During Twist Drilling Protocol By Guided And Non-Guided Implant Surgery, Joshua Lee 2020 Loma Linda University

Comparison Of Heat Generated During Twist Drilling Protocol By Guided And Non-Guided Implant Surgery, Joshua Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Guided implant surgery is becoming more prevalent among clinicians and is crucial for cases in which there are concerns about the proximity of the implant to vital anatomical structures, esthetic concerns, and the amount/quality of bone available. Surgical guides help with the angulation and positioning of the implant through the use of a CBCT scan and digital intraoral impression. However, there are some drawbacks with guided surgery. Heat that is generated during the osteotomy is one of the issues that has been of concern. The guide acts as a shield against the water irrigation from reaching the osteotomy …

The Emerging Oral Pathogen, Filifactor Alocis, Disrupts Neutrophil Functions To Enhance Survival And Dysregulate Inflammation., Irina Miralda Molina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Periodontitis is an irreversible, chronic inflammatory disease where pathogenic microbial communities accumulate in the gingival crevice. Advances in culture-independent techniques have facilitated the identification of new bacterial species in periodontal lesions, such as the Gram-positive anaerobe, Filifactor alocis. Neutrophils are a major component of the innate host response, and the outcome of their interaction with F. alocis may be a determinant of oral health status. While neutrophil functions typically protect the host against periodontal disease, oral pathogens have adapted to evade or disarm neutrophil microbicidal functions while promoting mechanisms that drive inflammation, which also provides a source of nutrients …

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructures are one of the most plentiful compounds that have emerged in various fields of technology such as medicine, energy and biosensing. Various TiO2 nanostructures (nanotubes [NTs] and nanowires) have been employed in photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing applications, greatly enhancing the detection of targets. TiO2 nanostructures, used as reinforced material or coatings for the bare surface of titanium implants, are excellent additive materials to compensate titanium implants deficiencies—like poor surface interaction with surrounding tissues—by providing nanoporous surfaces and hierarchical structures. These nanostructures can also be loaded by diversified drugs—like osteoporosis drugs, anticancer and antibiotics—and …
