The skin color of muscadine grapes (Vitis rotundifolia) is typically classified as black or bronze. A glutathione S-transferase, VrunGST4, has been identified as a candidate gene for berry skin color in muscadine grapes. A molecular marker was developed within VrunGST4 to distinguish between muscadine genotypes (cultivars and selections) with bronze (T:T), heterozygote black (C:T), and homozygote black (C:C) berries. Sulfur dioxide is an inorganic compound (IC) and air pollutant that causes health risks in humans. The buildup of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in enclosed indoor spaces is, therefore, a concern to human health, especially since the average person spends 90% of his/her time indoors. This study focused on decreasing SO2 concentration in a cost-effective and simple way—by using botanical biofiltration, or the uptake of pollutants by plants. Research in biofiltration has focused mostly on the remediation of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Globally, rice producers are faced with the temporal problem of deciding the optimal time to harvest rice. When harvested, paddy rice is typically at a harvest moisture content (HMC) between 15% and 22% and subsequently dried by the mill to a moisture content (MC) of 12.5%. Riceland Foods Inc., the largest miller of rice in the world, uses a stair-step pricing model to charge farmers to dry, which can complicate the timing of harvest as producers try to balance the tradeoff of minimizing drying costs by waiting to harvest at lower HMC vs. maintaining higher rice quality typically observed when …

Grapevine (Vitis species) is one of the most valuable fruit crops widely cultivated throughout the United States of America (USA). Grape and wine industries in the northern USA have been expanding rapidly with the demand for quality wine grapes that can be grown in Northern cold climate regions. As most popular cultivars are freezing sensitive, the development of new cultivars for the region continues through breeding. A fall broccoli trial was conducted in a high tunnel at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center, Vincennes, IN in 2016 to test the potential of growing broccoli in high tunnels after tomato. Six broccoli cultivars were evaluated in the trial. Seedlings were transplanted in the high tunnel on Sep. 2. Plants started to form heads in the middle of October. The first harvest occurred on Oct. 25 on cultivars Blue Wind and Green Magic. Harvest for cultivars Belstar and Arcadia started the latest on Nov. 11. Cultivars Green Magic and Blue Wind developed about 2 side heads per plant, which …

It is widely recognized that planting soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] early is critical to maximizing yield, but the influence of changing management factors when soybean planting is delayed is not well understood. The objectives of this research were to (a) identify management decisions that increase seed yield in either early- or late-planted soybean scenarios, and (b) estimate the maximum break-even price of each management factor identified to influence soybean seed yield in early- or late-planted soybean. Changes in canopy architecture traits have been shown to contribute to yield increases. Optimizing both light interception and light interception efficiency of agricultural crop canopies will be essential to meeting the growing food needs. Canopy architecture is inherently three-dimensional (3D), but many approaches to measuring canopy architecture component traits treat the canopy as a two-dimensional (2D) structure to make large scale measurement, selective breeding, and gene identification logistically feasible. Turf quality characteristics and large patch incidence of ten selected experimental zoysiagrass genotypes were evaluated during the 2018–2019 growing season in Manhattan, KS, and establishment rate of the same ten was evaluated in Olathe, KS. Although plots were inoculated withRhizoctonia solani(AG 2-2 LP) in September 2018 in Manhattan, no large patch occurred. However, the genotypes showed vari­ability in turf performance measured by turf quality, spring greenup, fall color reten­tion, and genetic color. Since the summer of 2017, 1,376 experimental zoysiagrass genotypes have been evaluated for winter survival in Olathe, KS, in an attempt to identify high quality, fine-textured types that survive in Kansas. After planting 458 progeny in the field in August 2017, only 17 experimental progeny survived when evaluated in spring 2018 (4%). In 2018, those 17 survivors were included with a new planting of 918 experimental progeny. In spring 2019, it was determined that 70 genotypes survived (8%). Water restrictions on irrigation are generally not science-based and may cause irreversible damage to turfgrass or inadvertently waste water. The objectives of our study were to evaluate effects of minimum water applications to ‘Meyer’ zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonicaSteud.) on 1) turfgrass performance during prolonged dry downs; and 2) survival and recovery thereafter. Zoysiagrass was watered with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30% reference evapotranspiration (ET) replacement for two months in two consecutive summers under an automated rainout shelter (excluded all rainfall) near Manhattan, KS. During a lawn renovation, weeds are often a major problem because they grow more aggressively than seedling turf. Turfgrass seedlings need starter fertilizer and plenty of water for proper establishment, which makes an ideal environment for weeds to thrive as well. With current herbicide label restrictions, there are limited weed control strategies during the critical establishment period.
