Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Surface Of Human Duodenum In Patients With And Without Duodenal Ulcer Disease, Bernard M. Schuman, Klaus Ritter, John H. L. Watson, Jessica Goodwin
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Endoscopic biopsy specimens of normal human duodenum from patients with duodenal ulcer disease were studied by light microscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. For scanning, the tissue was dried by the critical point-drying technique. SEM criteria for both normal and abnormal duodenal surfaces were determined. SEM evidence for the presence of "tuft cells" similar to those found on the surface of rat duodenum was found in both the normal and abnormal human material. Although other reports have described the favorable effects of carbenoxolone sodium treatment on duodenal ulcer disease, our SEM studies of four patients found that this treatment had …

A Comparative Study Of The Myosin Light Chain Kinases From Myoblast And Muscle Sources. Studies On The Kinases From Proliferative Rat Myoblasts In Culture, Rat Thigh Muscle, And Rabbit Skeletal Muscle, S. P. Scordilis, R. S. Adelstein
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Myosin light chain kinases have been isolated from rat thigh and rabbit skeletal muscle and cultured rat myoblasts. From these preparations, two types of kinases can be distinguished: calcium-dependent and calcium-independent. Both types of kinases can phosphorylate isolated P-light chains of myosin from several sources (skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and platelet). Data are shown which support the phosphorylation of the same site on the non-muscle P-light chains by both types of kinases. The rates of these reactions are, however, different for the two types of kinases. Kinetic analysis of the myoblast kinase show differing affinities for various P-light chains (non-muscle …

The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder
The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder
Masters Theses
Introduction
Daphnia pulex Leydig (Crustacea, Cladocera) is a common component of the zooplankton of freshwater lakes and ponds. Its importance in the aquatic trophic structure as food for small fish has long been recognized.
Typical populations of daphnia consist almost exclusively of females. Under favorable conditions this situation is perpetuated by parthenogenetic reproduction. Eggs produced in this manner are referred to as parthenogenetic or summer eggs. When stressed by falling temperatures, drought, overpopulation, or starvation, populations shift to sexual.reproduction. Parthenogenetic eggs are produced which develop into males. Other eggs known as ephippial or winter eggs are also produced, which after …

Complex biotic communities which have lately been recognized as being of vital importance to aquatic and upland ecosystems have evolved at Virginia's land-water interface. Most obvious are the beaches and vast intertidal stands of halophytic (salt-tolerant) plants on the periphery of the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay and their subordinate estuaries. Less obvious, but no less important, are nonvegetated intertidal flats and coastal freshwater marshes. Inland swamps and freshwater marshes complete the inventory; though more limited in extent than their coastal analog. Complex biotic communities which have lately been recognized as being of vital importance to aquatic and upland ecosystems have …

A Demographic And Behavioristic Description Of Visitors To Cherokee, N.C., Shirley Louise Hyatt
Masters Theses
The identification of demographic and behavioristic characteristics of summer visitors to Cherokee, North Carolina, which would provide a basis for marketing decisions, was undertaken in this research. A survey of visitors was conducted in Cherokee during the summer season to determine characteristics of the visitors.
Data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire that was distributed at sixteen businesses which proportionately represented craft shops, motels, restaurants, campgrounds, amusement attractions, and cultural attractions. Distribution points, dates, and times were randomly selected. Analysis of the data revealed behavioral and demographic characteristics of the summer visitor and behavioral influences on demographic segments.

Den Ecology Of Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Kenneth Gregory Johnson
Masters Theses
Radiotelemetry was used to locate winter dens, determine the denning period, and gather observations on the denning behavior of black bears (Ursus americanus) in a 42,800 ha portion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). After spring emergence, dens and the site parameter were measured and the vegetation sampled. Random transects and factor and discriminant function analysis were used to determine the availability of dens and denning habitat.
The denning period averaged 94 days with most bears entering dens between the last week in December and the first week in January and emerging from dens between the …

Composition And Structure Of Replacement Forest Stands Following Southern Pine Beetle Infestations As Related To Selected Site Variables In The Great Smoky Mountains, Nathaniel White Kuykendall Iii
Masters Theses
Stand composition and eleven site factors were sampled in 49 stands in the Great Smoky Mountains in which the pine overstory had been killed by the southern pine beetle. Replacement community types were determined using cluster analysis of relative densities for 21 common species. absolute densities for total stems, total pine, total oak, and eight individual species in the overstory, understory, and reproduction strata were related to selected site and vegetation variables by correlation and stepwise multiple regression.
Infestations greatly reduced the importance of pine in all replacement stands, converting most pine dominated stands to mixed pine-hardwood. Pine reproduction was …

An Enzymatic Activity In Uninfected Cells That Cleaves The Linkage Between Poliovirion Rna And The 5' Terminal Protein, Victor Ambros, Ralf Pettersson, David Baltimore
Victor R. Ambros
The 5' terminal protein (VPg) on poliovirion RNA can be removed by cell-free extracts from a variety of uninfected cells. This soluble enzymatic activity is found in both nuclear and cytoplasmic extracts of heLa cells and is activated by Mg++. The enzyme activity cleaves the tyrosine-phosphate bond that links the protein to the RNA. In a partially purified form it has insufficient nonspecific protease or nuclease activity to account for its action. The existence of this enzyme implies that poliovirus RNA is translated in cell-free extracts in a form that lacks the 5' terminal protein. The role of this enzyme …

A Floristic Assessment Of The Datil Mountains, Reggie A. Fletcher
Biology ETDs
The Datil Mountains of west-central New Mexico were selected for a floristic inventory and analysis because of the lack of previous study in this section of the state. The location of the study area in relationship to the Basin and Range, Southern Rocky Mountain, and Colorado Plateau physiographic provinces was a major factor in determining the initial need for floristic work in the Datil Mountain area. An annotated checklist of the vascular flora of the study area was compiled. For those 590 collected taxa, available information was compiled which could serve as a useful tool for land management in this …

Growth Analysis Of Tall Fescue Genotypes Differing In Yield And Leaf Photosynthesis, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson
Growth Analysis Of Tall Fescue Genotypes Differing In Yield And Leaf Photosynthesis, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Relationships between leaf photosynthesis and yield have not been well defined in forage grasses. Therefore, leaf growth, dry matter distribution, carbohydrate concentration, and growth analysis of four genotypes of tall fescue (Festuca mundinacea Schreb.) were examined. Genotypes, selected in the field for high and low CO2 exchange rate (CER) in combination with high and low yield, were compared in an attempt to study the relationship between photosynthesis and yield. In the vegetative growth stage, high yielding genotypes produced greater amounts of all plant parts (leaves, stem bases, and roots) than did low yielding genotypes; however, low yielding genotypes …
