Ultrastructural Study Of Wound Healing On A Root Planed And Citric Acid Treated Root Surface, Craig Martin Ririe Sep 1978

Ultrastructural Study Of Wound Healing On A Root Planed And Citric Acid Treated Root Surface, Craig Martin Ririe

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It has been shown previously that a root surface which has been scaled, root planed and demineralized by topical application of citric acid in vitro, is dominated by exposed collagen fibrils. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism of healing and possible reattachment of soft periodontal connective tissue to the root planed and subsequently acid treated root surfaces and to determine whether new collagen fibrils produced in the connective tissue could attach to these exposed fibrils.

Full thickness tissue flaps were raised and the coronal 4-5 mm of the labial alveolar plate removed over the maxillary incisor …

Influence Of Denervation And Hemithyroidectomy On The Age Related Increase In The Number Of Calcitonin-Containing Cells In Mouse Thyroid, Nualnoi Wechbanjong Jun 1978

Influence Of Denervation And Hemithyroidectomy On The Age Related Increase In The Number Of Calcitonin-Containing Cells In Mouse Thyroid, Nualnoi Wechbanjong

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It has been concluded from this study that nerve fibers in the superior laryngeal nerves have an influence on the development of C-cells in the mouse thyroid. This conclusion is based on the results of two types of investigation. The first is an analysis of the effect of age on the number of C-cells and the second is an investigation of the influence of denervation and hemithyroid-parathyroidectomy on the age related changes in C-cells numbers.

I. The distribution and c011centraticn of C-cells in mouse thyroid at various ages.

Environmental Cues In The Seasonal Development Of The Southern California Annual Grassland, George E. Johnson Jun 1978

Environmental Cues In The Seasonal Development Of The Southern California Annual Grassland, George E. Johnson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Annual grasslands characteristically experience a succession of seasonal phases which provide for the coexistence of various species by allowing them to make their major demands upon environmental resources at different times. Thus, an ecosystem furnishing certain resources at a limited rate is enabled to support a larger total biomass.

The grasslands of southern California consist principally of annual grasses coexisting with the few remaining native perennial grasses. Characteristic also is the inclusion of forbs which are distinctly either early spring or late summer plants. Many spring forbs, annual grasses, and summer forbs are observed to germinate in approximAte unison shortly …

Comparison Of Root Surfaces In Endodontic Lesions, Periodontic Lesions And Normal Human Teeth, Robert W. Hanson Jun 1978

Comparison Of Root Surfaces In Endodontic Lesions, Periodontic Lesions And Normal Human Teeth, Robert W. Hanson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The healing potential of an endodontic lesion is usually greater than a periodontic lesion (Simon et al. 1972; Hiatt 1977). Periodontal regeneration places particular emphasis on the soft tissue-tooth interface (Stahl 1977). This interface was examined in fifteen extracted human teeth.

The teeth were divided into three groups: (1) periapical lesions, (2) periodontal lesions, and (3) healthy periodontal tissue. Criteria were established for each group. Freshly extracted human teeth meeting the criteria were fixed in gluteraldehyde or paraformaldehyde. The teeth were then selected for surface observation or cracked for cross sectional examination. The teeth were post fixed, dehydrated, and coated …

Effects Of Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 Immune Serum On The Reproduction Of Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Railliet, 1896 In Mice, Samuel L. Chafin Jun 1978

Effects Of Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 Immune Serum On The Reproduction Of Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Railliet, 1896 In Mice, Samuel L. Chafin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The possible effects of ablastin, a reproduction-inhibiting antibody which is produced during the infection of the blood parasite, Trypanosoma musculi in the mouse, were investigated by fractionating the parasite into a supernatant fraction (designated as Group A test mice) and a pellet fraction (Group B test mice). These groups A and B mice were injected with the respective fractions, plus Freund’s Complete Adjuvant (FCA). Control mice were injected with FCA only. Sera from these three groups of mice were removed after the Group A and Group B mice were shown to be negative to T. musculi challenge, and Group A …

Effect Of Time And Diet On The Immune Status Of Mice Challenged With Herpes-Transformed Cells, Daila S. Gridley May 1978

Effect Of Time And Diet On The Immune Status Of Mice Challenged With Herpes-Transformed Cells, Daila S. Gridley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Human Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2)-transformed Balb/c mouse cells (H238 cells) are malignant in Balb/c mice. The immune stratus of mice bearing H238 cell-induced tumors was studied and changes in immune response with time and with altered diet of the mice were measured.

In the experiments dealing with the status of immunity with time after tumor cell injection, mice were fed Purina Laboratory Chow (P.L.C.), injected with H238 cells, and sacrificed three to eight weeks post-injection. In the diet experiments, groups of mice were fed either P.L.C. or one of six equicaloric diets, consisting of low or high …

Non-Parental-Type Recombinants In Crosses Between Different Restriction-Modification Systems In Salmonella, Mary Ball May 1978

Non-Parental-Type Recombinants In Crosses Between Different Restriction-Modification Systems In Salmonella, Mary Ball

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many new restriction-modification (R-M) system which are closely linked to serB and allelic to the hsdSB system of S. typimurium occur in different Salmonella serotypes. In PI transduction studies with these systems, recombinants were isolated which fell into one of three classes with reference to their specific restriction phenotype. Recombinants that restricted like the donor, recombinants that restricted like the recipient and recombinants that had lost the ability to restrict. This latter group having lost the recipient SB restriction without gaining the specific donor restriction and here called "zero recombinants,” were of special interest and were investigated.

Zero recombinants …
