Mercury, Copper, And Zinc In Selected Ichthyofauna Of Lower Chesapeake Bay And Hampton Roads, Virginia, W. Bruce Aitenhead
OES Theses and Dissertations
Anchovys, croaker, spat, summer flounder and hogchokers were collected monthly to seasonally from November 1972 to October 1973 at three locations in the southern Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia.
The concentrations of mercury, copper and zinc were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in whole fishes. Metal concentration varied with species and location. Anchovys had the highest mean concentrations of mercury and zinc while hog- chokers had the highest mean copper concentration. Mercury levels exceeding O.5 ppm were observed in species from all three loca- tions, but maximum heavy metal concentrations per species were highest in Craney Island fishes.

Effects Of Row Width And Seeding Rate On Yield And Other Agronomic Characteristics Of Three Soybean Cultivars, Russell Kithcart
Effects Of Row Width And Seeding Rate On Yield And Other Agronomic Characteristics Of Three Soybean Cultivars, Russell Kithcart
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Soybeans have traditionally been grown in rows wide enough to allow mechanical cultivation and to increase lodging resistance. Improved cultivars and herbicides have permitted farmers to obtain yield advantages from narrower rows. The growth response of soybeans to variations in row width and seeding rates depends upon the cultivar and geographic location.
“Williams,” “Mitchell,” and “Essex” cultivars were planted at row widths of 18, 36, 54, and 72cm. at seeding rates of 33, 67, 100 and 134 kg/ha in multi-row plots. Data were collected from each plot for seed yield, lodging, plant height, height of lowest pod, seed and population …

Zoogeography Of Tropical Western Atlantic Crinoidea (Echinodermata), David L. Meyer, Charles G. Messing, Donald B. Macurda Jr.
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Recent collections of crinoids from the intertidal zone to 1,650 m in the tropical western Atlantic have provided significant range extensions for more than half of the 44 comatulid and stalked species known from the region. Of the 34 comatulid species, over 60% are endemic to the region; of the 10 stalked species, 90% are endemic. At the familial level, this fauna has its strongest affinities with the tropical Indo-Pacific region. Comatulids are most abundant above 300 m, while stalked species occur primarily between 100 and 700 m. Species that occur primarily above 600 m (the deepest penetration of the …

The Kinetics Of Solvent Reorientation In Hydroxylated Solvents From The Exciting-Wavelength Dependence Of Chromophore Emission Spectra, John Milton, Robert M. Purkey, William C. Galley
WM Keck Science Faculty Papers
The disappearance of the exciting-wavelength dependence of the phosphorescence spectra of polar, aromatic chromophores in supercooled glycol–water mixtures is utilized to monitor the kinetics of solvent reorientation. Reorientation times in the nanosecond to second range are obtained for (3:2 v/v) glycerol–water and (1:1 v/v) ethylene glycol–water at 140–240 °K. The results suggest that the process is one involving a cluster of solvent molecules and in which the chromophore plays a relatively passive role. Steady-state data and direct measurements of phosphorescence shifts as a function of time indicate that the solvent reorientation process is nonexponential in nature. The decay function derived …

Influence Of Denervation And Hemithyroidectomy On The Age Related Increase In The Number Of Calcitonin-Containing Cells In Mouse Thyroid, Nualnoi Wechbanjong
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It has been concluded from this study that nerve fibers in the superior laryngeal nerves have an influence on the development of C-cells in the mouse thyroid. This conclusion is based on the results of two types of investigation. The first is an analysis of the effect of age on the number of C-cells and the second is an investigation of the influence of denervation and hemithyroid-parathyroidectomy on the age related changes in C-cells numbers.

The Role Of Allelopathic Interference In The Maintenance Of Southern Appalachian Heath Balds, Robert Edward Gant
The Role Of Allelopathic Interference In The Maintenance Of Southern Appalachian Heath Balds, Robert Edward Gant
Doctoral Dissertations
Allelopathic interference seems to be an important mechanism in the maintenance and persistence of southern Appalachian heath bald communities. Comparative analyses were conducted on two heath balds located in the Balsam Mountains of western North Carolina to distinguish phytotoxic characteristics that enhance persistence. Field studies revealed that one community was a mixed heath bald dominated by Rhododendron catawbiense and the second resembled an immature spruce-rhododendron forest heath dominated by Rhododendron maximum and Picea rubens.
Caffeic acid, gallic acid, gentisic acid, hydroquinone, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2-pinene, phloroglucinol, rhododendrol, and vanillic acid were isolated and identified from canopy drip, leaves, litter, roots, …
The Ecology Of Rabies In Northeastern Tennessee, Howard Fleming Hall Iii
The Ecology Of Rabies In Northeastern Tennessee, Howard Fleming Hall Iii
Doctoral Dissertations
The study sought to determine the ecological factors which influenced the time and place at which rabid animals occurred in northeastern Tennessee. The study region consisted of 30 counties in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Within this region three Tennessee counties, the study area, were selected for detailed field study.
The objectives of the study were pursued by means of (1) a detailed retrospective analysis of reported rabies cases in the study region over several decades, (2) the collection of data on recent (1972-1976) reported rabies cases in the study area, (3) a serum survey to detect rabies antibodies among …

Effects Of Strip Mining Related Disturbance On The Benthic Insect Communities Of Selected Streams In The New River Basin Of East Tennessee, Virginia Rose Tolbert
Doctoral Dissertations
Four streams in the New River Basin in East Tennessee (one undisturbed and three disturbed) were sampled monthly to determine the effects of contour strip mining for coal on benthic insect communities. In addition to sampling for benthic insects, various physical parameters were measured at the time of sampling to help determine factors that cause changes in benthic community composition in streams disturbed by strip mining. Samples from each stream were analyzed monthly, seasonally, and for the total sampling period to determine effect on the number of species and individuals and on species diversity. For these three factors data were …

Distribution Of Two Species Of Long-Eared Bats Of The Genus Myotis On The Northern Great Plains, J. Knox Jones Jr., Jerry R. Choate
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Two long-eared species of the cosmopolitan bat genus Myotis, the long-eared myotis (Myotis evotis) and the fringe-tailed myotis (Myotis thysanodes), have been known for many years from the Northern Great Plains. Material acquired in the last decade or so, however, reveals a somewhat different distributional pattern for the two species than had been supposed on the basis of specimens obtained earlier, some of which have been misidentified in the published literature.

The Effect Of Auxiliary Dispersants On The Dispersion And Properties Of Coating Made With Domestic Clays, Carroll A. Brandt
The Effect Of Auxiliary Dispersants On The Dispersion And Properties Of Coating Made With Domestic Clays, Carroll A. Brandt
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Polymeric organic dispersants are now being used to replace all or part of the inorganic dispersants currently is use for pigmented coatings. They are generally recommended for hard-to-disperse or for special applications where unusual coating requirements must be obtained.
This study showed the effect of some of these auxiliary dispersants when used with tetrasodium pyrephosphate (TSPP) to disperse domestic clay.
The results of this study showed that the most effective type of dispersants for this application are the acrylic-based polymers. The lignosulfate derivative and styrene maleic anhydride did not look as good as the acrylic-based polymers. When used in coatings …
Noninvasive Techniques In The Evaluation Of Arterial Disease, J. Dennis Baker
Noninvasive Techniques In The Evaluation Of Arterial Disease, J. Dennis Baker
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This paper reviews noninvasive technology currently being applied in clinical peripheral vascular laboratories for the evaluation of obstructive arterial disease in the lower extremities and in the cerebral circulation. Lower extremity, arterial insufficiency can be assessed by pressures measured with a Doppler flowmeter or by oscillometric tracings obtained with a Pulse Volume Recorder. Carotid artery stenosis is studied by: 1) ocular pneumoplethysmography, which indirectly measures ophthalmic artery pressure; 2) oculoplethysmography, which compares pulse arrival time at the two eyes; and 3) the Doppler ophthalmic test, which detects the flow pattern in the ophthalmic artery. The main uses of the tests …

What's New In Crohn's Disease Treatment, Francis J. Owens
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Progress in the management of Crohn's disease is limited by our inability to compare different patients. Two methods of evaluating the severity of disease have recently been published. Of these, the National Cooperative Crohn's Disease Study (NCCDS) method has been utilized in a study reported on at several national meetings but still in progress. Antibiotics in intensive prolonged dosage, e.g. ampicillin, 500 mg qid for several months, have recently been reported to benefit greater than 90% of patients not responding to conventional therapy. Metronidazole and dapsone continue to be mentioned in letters to journals. Sulfasalazine has been found useful in …
