We describe and analyze our efforts to support Learning Assistants (LAs)—undergraduate peer
educators who simultaneously take a 3-credit pedagogy course—in fostering equitable team
dynamics and collaboration within a project-based engineering design course. Tonso and
others have shown that (a) inequities can “live” in mundane interactions such as those among
students within design teams and (b) those inequities both reflect and (re)produce broader
cultural patterns and narratives (e.g. Wolfe & Powell, 2009; Tonso, 1996, 2006a, 2006b;
McLoughlin, 2005). LAs could be well-positioned to notice and potentially disrupt inequitable

The Access Network consists of nine university-based programs from across the country working towards a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible STEM community. Each program places a strong emphasis on undergraduate and graduate student leadership, and some programs are entirely student-led. Self-regulated learning is an important aspect of student learning and academic achievement. Certain parenting styles help children develop self-regulated learning and encourage them to exert control over their own learning. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship that exists between parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian and permissive) and student’s classroom motivation. Simple random sampling was used to select the subjects for the study. Cross-Country Heterogeneity In Students’ Reporting Behavior: The Use Of The Anchoring Vignette Method, Hana Vonkova, Gema Zamarro, Collin Hitt

Self-reports are an indispensable source of information in education research but they are often affected by heterogeneity in reporting behavior. Failing to correct for this heterogeneity can lead to invalid comparisons across groups. We use the parametric anchoring vignette method to correct for cross-country incomparability of students’ reports on teacher’s classroom management. Our analysis is based on the data from the Programme for International Student Assessment 2012. We show significant variation in implicit standards across countries. Correlations between countries’ average teacher classroom management levels and external variables like students test scores and public expenditure per pupil change substantially after our …

Research on the experiences of college students with disabilities and the extent to which student affairs practitioners and scholars are meeting their needs is sparse. This article advances the concept of Universal Research Design (URD) by discussing the application of universal design principles to research on college students. This paper outlines efforts to teach critical thinking skills for students and reduce grading time. Faculty in
the educational interpreting program stopped providing direct feedback on their interpreted work and
implemented a self-assessment only system of assessment. As part of this process students were taught and
then graded on the efficacy of their self-assessment of their own interpreting work. This has fundamentally
altered program and course assessments and reduced the amount of time it takes for grading and

on their interpreted work. We believe that independent practitioners
need to be skilled at self-assessment rather than relying on external ratings
of performance; thus, for the last 2 years, I have taught and then

about evolution. Some of these factors include a student’s background (including their religion and major of study),

This paper looks at pedagogical applications of our web-based digital visualization project, Mapping Ancient Texts (MAT). We discuss: (1) a course in which students use the web application Carto to create visualizations from geo-spatial information in Cicero’s Letters; and (2) a student-researcher developing a digital visualization of Hannibal’s movements during the Second Punic War. This paper explores how these projects teach important technical skills and engage students in detailed analysis of Roman mobility and history. We also discuss the challenges of using evolving technologies in the liberal arts setting.
