Teachers' Professional Knowledge And Formative Assessment Practices: An Empirical Study From Middle School Earth Science Instruction In The Context Of An Education Improvement Community, Laura Millay Dec 2018

Teachers' Professional Knowledge And Formative Assessment Practices: An Empirical Study From Middle School Earth Science Instruction In The Context Of An Education Improvement Community, Laura Millay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While there is widespread agreement that effective formative assessment supports student learning in science, the knowledge teachers need in order assess learning remains sparsely studied. In 1999, Magnusson, Krajcik, and Borko (MKB) proposed that Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK, Shulman 1986, 1987) is a distinct knowledge domain that synthesizes three base domains that include science subject matter, pedagogy, and context. The MKB model identified Assessment Knowledge as one of five components of PCK. Since 1999, several studies have used the MKB framework, but have left Assessment Knowledge underdefined. In 2012, Avargil, Herscovitz, and Dori proposed a revision based on empirical study, …

Teacher Judgment Accuracy In The Domain Of Spelling, April Spencer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Results showed that teachers’ judgments were accurate 77% of the time, a figure similar to accuracy levels reported in previous teacher judgment research in the area of literacy. The study also included an error analysis task that was designed to assess teachers’ knowledge of developmental spelling. Results revealed a significant relationship (r = .42) between teacher judgment accuracy and performance …

Training Recommendations From Early Childhood Education Providers, Teresa Gallanti, Brooke Hachey, Dawn Johnson

Psychology and Community Studies | Student Scholarship

Early childcare education providers are seen as having many training needs. Training needs concur with the challenges most providers face, but not always. A series of focus groups conducted in Hancock County by Hanson (2017) provided an estimation of the resources present; the challenges early childcare providers faced; and the trainings that individuals would like to see. The school districts in the neighboring county, Washington County, were asked if the county was interested in having a similar audit. Washington County school districts declined suggesting that the county had all the services they needed. Instead this research was conducted to see …

A Study Of Teacher Growth, Supervision, And Evaluation In Alberta: Policy And Perception In A Collective Case Study, Pamela Adams, Carmen Mombourquette, Jim Brandon, Darryl Hunter, Sharon Friesen, Kim Koh, Dennis Parsons, Bonnie Stelmach

Journal of Educational Supervision

Teacher effectiveness has long been identified as critical to student success and, more recently, supporting students attaining the skills and dispositions required to be successful in the early 21st century. To do so requires that teachers engage in professional learning characterized as a shift away from conventional models of evaluation and judgment. Accordingly, school and system leaders must create “policies and environments designed to actively support teacher professional growth” (Bakkenes, Vermunt, & Webbels, 2010). This paper reports on the Alberta Teacher Growth, Supervision, and Evaluation (TGSE) Policy (Government of Alberta, 1998) through the eyes of teachers, school leaders, and superintendents. …
