Background: There is a high number of female head of households in Chile, a phenomenon that adds to the poverty of the country and causes a difficult livelihood for many families. Objectives: Analyze the case of Chile in regards to this phenomenon and the services and resources available for these women, paying attention to social, economic, and political factors. In 2004–05, the Inter-Agency Coordination Group for Mine Action (IACG-MA) endorsed the first UN Gender Guidelines for Mine Action Programmes to enhance the integration of gender considerations into UN mine action programmes. The guidelines were developed with the assistance of the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA). This effort followed the launch by DPKO in 2004 of the Gender Resource Package for Peacekeeping Operations, which identified key gender issues and provided an overview of how they could be addressed most effectively. The package, designed on the strong foundation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), recommended elaborating detailed guidelines within …

Amid growing concern about childhood obesity, the United States spends billions of dollars on food assistance: providing meals and subsidizing food purchases. We examine the relationship between food assistance and body mass index (BMI) for young, low-income children, who are a primary target population for federal food programs and for efforts to prevent childhood obesity. Our findings indicate that food assistance may unintentionally contribute tot he childhood obesity problem in cities with high food prices. We also find that subsidized meals at school or day care are beneficial for children's weight status, and we argue that expanding access to subsidized …

According to the investigation report the de-miner was using the scraper direct on the top of the detected signal causing it to go off. It was then found that the exploded item was a MUV fuse. As a result of the explosion, [MUV fuze] sustained injuries on his eyes, right side ear, arm and head; the injuries indicate that the de-miner was not using his visor properly.

The Deminer was trying to check signal using the heavy rake, the M14 mine was laid in a grassy solid ground full of grass root and stones, the deminer tried to drew the grass by the heavy rake, the roots of the grass push the pressure plate of the mine, that cause the mine to blast.

The deminer was trying to clear the AP mine in a cluster, there was no signal due to the depth of the mines, she asked the team leader to help her in finding the signal, he tried and started to excavate until he found signal, he located and excavated over the signal until he reached 20 cm depth at that time he hit the M14 mine and caused the detonation

The Deminer today was officiated as a team leader due to the absence of the team leader. He took one deminer tools and started to work himself in one of the remaining cluster in his section. While he was using the grass cutter to cut the grass in front of the base stick he hit the barely covered M14 mine by the grass cutter which caused the mine to initiate.

This technical report summarizes new and existing data to address the question, “Does Head Start work for Indiana children, families, and communities?” Data sources consulted in this study include the state Head Start Program Information Report, local Indiana Head Start and Early Head Start Programs, existing national studies of Head Start and Early Head Start, and local and national data available on children’s development in early care and education programs for low-income families. Despite the availability of extensive research documenting the need for greater coordination between mine action and development organisations, concrete guidance for practitioners and policy-makers on how to link mine action with development has been lacking. In response, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Development has published guidelines on how to ensure mine action promotes development in mine-affected countries. Why do America's cities sprawl whereas European cities remain comparatively compact, and what difference do the patterns of urban development make? Pietro Nivola, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, addresses these questions. Nivola examines two kinds of determinants of urban form: (1) market forces, including those influenced by geography, demographics, and technological change, and (2) public policies shaping national transportation systems, tax policy, educational institutions, and more.
