This dissertation studies the Memoscopio archive and its collection of testimonies about the 2009 World March for Peace and Nonviolence (the March). This collection came into existence during 2009 and 2010 through a participatory archiving project carried out by a team of peace advocates and researchers in collaboration with March participants. The March was a transnational and decentralized campaign that promoted peace, nonviolence, and justice through activities in 600 cities, social media, and a three-month march around the world. On the 15th of January 2014 at [International demining organisation] task CBU 849, an uncontrolled detonation of a US M series M42 or M46 sub-munitions occurred while International demining organisation] searcher [Victim No.1] was cutting the vegetation and led to an injury with him and the site supervisor [Victim No.2].

[Victim No.1] sustained injuries from fragmentations of the detonated submunition in the head, in both eyes and in the right jaw. Whilst The supervisor [Victim No.2] got injuries from the fragmentations in the left thigh, elbow of the left hand [arm] and small fragments in the left eye.

After nearly forty years of perpetual bloody conflict in Afghanistan, the Afghan Peace Volunteers (APV) —a small cohort of multi-ethnic Afghans— have concluded that nonviolence is not merely effective, it is essential for the long-term stability of their nation. Established in 2008 as Our Journey to Smile, the APV is a publicly identifiable organization promoting peaceful change in Afghanistan. Its members have now spent five years living out an experiment in peacemaking.

The movement to end the suffering caused by cluster munitions succeeded not only in establishing a legal ban in the form of the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), but also in decisively reshaping the global perception of these weapons. Over the past decade, the awareness-raising and political mobilization surrounding cluster munitions have led to an understanding among states that any use would be associated with unnecessary human suffering and would most certainly provoke considerable international criticism. Several recent studies indicate that revolutions of non-violent civil resistance lead to more democratic and peaceful political transitions than either violent revolutions or elite-led political transitions. However, this general trend has not been disaggregated to explain the many prominent cases where nonviolent revolutions are followed by authoritarianism or civil war. Understanding these divergent cases is critical, particularly in light of the problematic transitions following the "Arab Spring" revolutions of 2011. In this paper I explain why nonviolent revolutions sometimes lead to these negative outcomes. This thesis examines the complex, interdisciplinary nature of counterinsurgency in the 21st century by assessing the whole-of-government, population-centric approach that the Dutch Armed Forces and Government took to combat the Taliban in Uruzagn, Afghanistan from 1 August 2006 to 1 August 2010. The Dutch approach resulted in increased security, as well as increased political and economic capacity in the three districts of Uruzgan where they focused their efforts. By the end of Task Force Uruzgan, the Government of Afghanistan had increased its majority control from 0 percent of the population to approximately 60 percent, and the Afghan National Security Forces …

This paper describes and analyzes a soccer tournament for Ugandan and refugee youth based on the principles and practices of football3, an established methodology for using soccer as a means of dialogue and resolution of conflict across differences. The goal of this tournament to was build relationships between Ugandan and refugee youth at Soccer Without Borders Uganda. This tournament was held in 2013 in Kampala under the auspices of Soccer Without Borders Uganda and involved training of staff. The strategy presented here builds on our experience, accomplishments, and lessons learned.
