Terjemahan Beranotasi Dongeng La Sorcière De La Rue Mouffetard Dalam Bahasa Indonesia, Rifqi Ayu Everina, Myrna Laksman-Huntley

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

An annotated translation is a translation with notes or annotations of the equivalent selected in the target language with the aim of being accountable for the equivalent. This study examines a tale entitled “la Sorcière de la Rue Mouffetard” written by Pierre Gripari. This study employs qualitative methods and a comparative model to discuss translation problems and their solutions using translation strategies from Molina and Albir (2002). The use of interjection, idioms, and words containing culture is the problem in this fairy tale translation of language and cultural elements. Various dictionaries and websites are used both in the process of …

Suara Perempuan Dalam Lagu Paduan Suara Dialita, Dyah Paramita Saraswati

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

The women, who survived the 1965 tragedy and had been political prisoners because they were thought to have ties to the Indonesian Communist Party, had been silenced for a long time. Those female survivors then spoke through songs in the Dialita Choir. What they do is a form of women’s writing which is an attempt to include women in historical narratives. This study aims to analyze their act as a form of feminine writing that can be seen through the lyrics of a song sung by the Dialita Choir. The lyrics from the Dialita Choir are treated as text. Nominal Incorporation In Shiwilu (Kawapanan): Nouns, Classifiers And The Deceased Marker =Ku’, Pilar Valenzuela 2022 Chapman University

Nominal Incorporation In Shiwilu (Kawapanan): Nouns, Classifiers And The Deceased Marker =Ku’, Pilar Valenzuela

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Shiwilu is a good representative of the Andes-Amazonia transitional zone, in that it exhibits a mixture of phonological and grammatical traits that are typical of the languages of these two regions (Valenzuela 2015, 2018). The present article addresses a phenomenon that is common in Amazonian languages but absent in the Central Andean families Quechuan and Aymaran: nominal incorporation (Dixon and Aikhenvald 1999: 10; Adelaar with Muysken 2004; Aikhen- vald 2017: 296). In this work, ‘nominal incorporation’ is a cover term to designate the process of inserting into the verb a noun, a classifier, or the deceased marker =ku’."

Prosodic And Deictic Features As Performance Markers In Southern Baptist Sermons, Matt Nelson 2022 University of Mary Washington

Prosodic And Deictic Features As Performance Markers In Southern Baptist Sermons, Matt Nelson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper examines sermons taken from Southern Baptist churches in Virginia to study how the forms of sermons contribute to the message of the sermons. The data for the study comes from publicly posted recordings of sermons on websites of churches registered with the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia. I took five sermons, transcribed, and analyzed them using methods of discourse analysis. I find that Southern Baptist pastors change their tempo mid-utterance, pause often, change pronouns between themselves and the congregation, and refer to the weekly sermon as a reference point in time. I argue that these discourse features mark …

Making Use Of Prosodic Resources In A New Language: Self-Repetition In Wh-Questions In Talk-In-Interaction, Phoebe Cordova 2022 Portland State University

Making Use Of Prosodic Resources In A New Language: Self-Repetition In Wh-Questions In Talk-In-Interaction, Phoebe Cordova

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

There is a growing body of research being conducted on L2 prosodic acquisition, production, and variation. Studies have analyzed data from a variety of L1s and have primarily focused on the impact of age of acquisition and proficiency level on L2 prosody. Additionally, almost all of these studies have investigated this area from a phonological approach, using spoken language elicited in highly controlled experimental settings with weak ecological validity. In contrast, this study collected naturalistic language data of an L1 Mandarin speaker of English and incorporated both a phonological and interactional approach to gain a more complete understanding of L2 …

La Diversidad Lingüística Durante Y Después Del Franquismo En España, Molly L. Taylor 2022 St. John Fisher University

La Diversidad Lingüística Durante Y Después Del Franquismo En España, Molly L. Taylor

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

This Way Kids: The Roles Of Locativity In Korean Queer Identity Creation, Shea A. Husband 2022 Macalester College

This Way Kids: The Roles Of Locativity In Korean Queer Identity Creation, Shea A. Husband

Linguistics Honors Projects

The study of queer linguistic practices in East Asia as a whole, and especially in Korea, is an area in desperate need of scholarship. While extensive research exists on the linguistic practices of people with non-heteronormative sexual identities in an English-speaking context (see Bucholtz and Hall, 2004; 2005; Eckert and McConnel-Ginet, 1992 as examples), only two paper touches on queer identity in a Korean linguistic context, namely King (2008) and Kim (2016). King’s paper discusses the roles queer identity plays in English learning among three Korean gay men in Seoul, and Kim’s paper deals with the othering of queer Korean …

The Economics Of Information And The Meaning Of Speech, Charles W. Collier 2022 University of Florida

The Economics Of Information And The Meaning Of Speech, Charles W. Collier

Catholic University Law Review

In common usage the communication of information is not sharply distinguished from the use of language or speech to make factual or propositional statements. So it should come as no surprise that one of the main legal justifications for protecting speech--that it underwrites a “marketplace of ideas” and thereby contributes to the search for truth--has strong parallels in the economic theory of information. “Indeed,” as Kenneth Arrow writes, “the market system as a whole has frequently been considered as an organization for the allocation of resources; the typical argument for its superiority to authoritative central allocation has been the greater …

Resurrecting Gaelic: Modernity And Heritage Language Revival In Scotland In A Comparative Perspective, Sean Coady 2022 University of Mary Washington

Resurrecting Gaelic: Modernity And Heritage Language Revival In Scotland In A Comparative Perspective, Sean Coady

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Many people from across the world have little or no connection to their heritage languages. Whether this loss is caused by conquest, colonialization, or simply lack of parent-child transmission, many believe that they are missing an integral part of their cultural identity and want to reclaim the languages of their forebearers. There is wide debate about how, why, and if this linguistic reclamation and revitalization should happen because, in the face of modernity and language evolution, the best solutions are not always clear. What constitutes successful language revitalization in the modern world, and why does it happen? Gaelic in Scotland …

Implications Of Metalinguistic Awareness On Early Childhood Word-Referent Mapping, Zinan Yang 2022 Macalester College

Implications Of Metalinguistic Awareness On Early Childhood Word-Referent Mapping, Zinan Yang

Linguistics Honors Projects

Children exhibit word-referent learning mechanisms like statistical learning (SL) proposed by Yu and Smith (2007) and propose-but-verify (PBV) mechanisms proposed by Medina (2011), but prior work has yet to investigate how children develop metalinguistic awareness within these two approaches. To evaluate the differences in corpus data predictions of the SL and PBV mechanisms, this study proposes a learning bias: an Extralinguistic Reference Bias. Statistical learning predicts a constrained trajectory of children’s development of metalinguistic awareness. Children younger than approximately age 5 have limited access to metalinguistic language use while they are engaged in the initial mapping of forms to their …

Variation In Compensatory Strategies As A Function Of Target Constriction Degree In Post-Glossectomy Speech, Christina Hagedorn, Yijing Lu, Asterios Toutios, Uttam Sinha, Louis Goldstein, Shrikanth Narayanan 2022 CUNY College of Staten Island

Variation In Compensatory Strategies As A Function Of Target Constriction Degree In Post-Glossectomy Speech, Christina Hagedorn, Yijing Lu, Asterios Toutios, Uttam Sinha, Louis Goldstein, Shrikanth Narayanan

Publications and Research

Individuals who have undergone treatment for oral cancer oftentimes exhibit compensatory behavior in consonant production. This pilot study investigates whether compensatory mechanisms utilized in the production of speech sounds with a given target constriction location vary systematically depending on target manner of articulation. The data reveal that compensatory strategies used to produce target alveolar segments vary systematically as a function of target manner of articulation in subtle yet meaningful ways. When target constriction degree at a particular constriction location cannot be preserved, individuals may leverage their ability to finely modulate constriction degree at multiple constriction locations along the vocal tract.

Using Sociolinguistics And Literary Studies To Understand Code-Switching Within Works By Louise Erdrich, Bruno Santic 2022 Bellarmine University

Using Sociolinguistics And Literary Studies To Understand Code-Switching Within Works By Louise Erdrich, Bruno Santic

Undergraduate Theses

There exists a multitude of definitions and concepts that describe the movement between and from one linguistic code to the next, commonly referred to as code-switching. Each definition given differs not only between fields of research but also within said fields of research, making it incredibly difficult to create one unified definition for code-switching. The two most popular fields of research that have extensively studied code-switching are sociolinguistics and literature/literary studies, with both fields having basic tenets of study that create different nuances in how code-switching is described by researchers in each respective field of study. One of the key …

The Main Aspects Of The Development And Historical And Chronological Features Of Translated Lexicography In Uzbekistan, Sohib Salimovich Sharipov 2022 deputy dean of the Philology faculty, BSU

The Main Aspects Of The Development And Historical And Chronological Features Of Translated Lexicography In Uzbekistan, Sohib Salimovich Sharipov

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Background. Among the Eastern Slavs, the first dictionaries were called lexicons, alphabets or interpretations - they were mainly collections of foreign and obsolete words. One of the first glossaries was the Pilot's Book (1282) - a translation dictionary in which 174 Old Russian, Greek and Old Slavonic words were interpreted. In 1596, Lavrentiy Zizaniy Tustanovsky compiled the first printed dictionary “Lexis, that is, the sayings are briefly collected from the Slovenian language”, as an appendix to the “Slavic-Russian Primer”. Thus, we have briefly decided on the word dictionary and its origin. The dictionary, as mentioned above, is the object of …

The Development Of English Children’S Literature And Its Representatives, Zarnigor Rakhimovna Sobirova, Umidjon Akram O’G’Li Umarov

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Introduction. This article deals with the history of English children’s literature and its development and gives information about its representatives such as Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Arthur Conan Doyle . English children’s literature is closely connected with the folklore, the oldest literary monuments, myths and legends, songs, the moral and educational essence of such works, didactic principles and works dedicated to the children. Main examples of these include the old English poem “Beowulf”, Daniel Defoe's "The Adventures of Robinson", Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes”, "Stone's relatives", "Death of Arthur", "The White Squad", Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s travels”. Research methods. English …

El Uso Del Espanglish En Escuelas Como Una Expresión De La Identidad De La Tercera Cultura, Isabella N. Yeager

Global Tides

A Study In Words, Will Hodges 2022 Georgia Southern University

A Study In Words, Will Hodges

Honors College Theses

The etymology of words can provide insight into the language we speak today, explaining why certain words possess derogatory meanings, or simply why they hold their current definitions. C.S. Lewis published Studies in Words in 1960, and it contained an examination of the etymologies of various English words, explaining changes in meaning and usage throughout time. This thesis is structured similarly, exploring the etymologies and usage history of different English words, providing context for their modern meanings and an explanation of the importance behind understanding their histories.
