Libraries encourage students to utilize Institutional Repositories (IRs) to house e-portfolios that demonstrate their skills and experiences. This is especially important for students when applying for jobs and admission into graduate schools. However, within the academic sphere there are legitimate reasons why some faculty-student collaboration efforts should not be documented and openly shared in institutional repositories. The need for the protection of ideas and processes prior to faculty publication can be in direct conflict with the intention for institutional repositories to promote the excellent efforts of students. INTRODUCTION Undergraduate research journals provide students with an opportunity to disseminate their work while learning about the scholarly publishing process. The opportunities to learn about scholarly communication have been demonstrated, but such journals also offer a means of helping students attain necessary information literacy competencies. By partnering in the publication of undergraduate journals, libraries can further strategic goals related to information literacy and establish a connection between library publishing and student success. As more researchers look to publish and cite research data, it will be important to link the published data sets to the corresponding articles and technical reports. This lightening talk will discuss the developing collaborations between the Purdue University Libraries, including the Purdue University Press, and the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP), a collaboration between Purdue University and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Since 2006, the Libraries has been working with JTRP researchers in the production, dissemination, and stewardship of technical reports. The collaboration expanded in 2010, to include publication of technical reports through Purdue e-Pubs and the Press. The …

The Open Access (OA) movement’s impact on scholarly communication has reached a tipping point. Increasingly, legal requirements such as the Illinois Open Access law (Public Act 098-0925) mandate open access to state funded research, and funding agencies are obliging researchers to preserve data in accessible platforms. In addition, publisher-driven “gold OA” and free-access “green OA” require researchers to navigate complicated options for copyright control. Meanwhile, new OA “scholars networks” offer possibilities for collaboration of which scholars may be unaware. Identifying The Effect Of Open Access On Citations Using A Panel Of Science Journals, Mark J. Mccabe, Christopher M. Snyder

An open‐access journal allows free online access to its articles, obtaining revenue from fees charged to submitting authors or from institutional support. Using panel data on science journals, we are able to circumvent problems plaguing previous studies of the impact of open access on citations. In contrast to the huge effects found in these previous studies, we find a more modest effect: moving from paid to open access increases cites by 8% on average in our sample. The benefit is concentrated among top‐ranked journals. In fact, open access causes a statistically significant reduction in cites to the bottom‐ranked journals in …

With the rise of alternate discovery services, such as Google Scholar, in conjunction with the increase in open access content, researchers have the option to bypass academic libraries when they search for and retrieve scholarly information. This state of affairs implies that academic libraries exist in competition with these alternate services and with the patrons who use them, and as a result, may be disintermediated from the scholarly information seeking and retrieval process.
