Generation Open: Researchers' Roles in the Age of Openness

An increasing number of research funders require free public access to the outcomes of funded research. To comply with the requirement, some researchers choose to publish their findings in open access journals. Given that there are so many choices, what should researchers consider when choosing an open access journal to publish?

To celebrate Open Access Week (October 20-26, 2014), the University of Kentucky Libraries hosted a workshop that aimed to help you answer the above question.

Print your own cookie cutter on a 3D printer using one of these files designed by Chip Wolfe, Digitization Specialist/Access Services Technician at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The .dae file does not need to scaled; the .stl file will need to be scaled. The cutter was designed to be 14 mm deep and 85 mm top to bottom, but can be rescaled to whatever size you like.

This print marketing piece was designed to complement online promotion of Open Access Week 2014 at Gettysburg College.

Door hangers provide a brief description of OA Week events aimed at faculty.

These were printed at our campus print shop at minimal cost. Circles were cut with a circle tool borrowed from the library's Badge-A-Minit button-making system. Door hangers were hung on every professor's office door.

The Singapore Management University started implementing a new solution for Integrated Research Information System (IRIS) in April 2014. Project background and some success factors is covered. IRIS would replace existing silo in-house systems. The key objective of IRIS is to have one system that takes care of ethics, research project management, grant management, publications and reporting. During the IRIS project implementation, the tasks performed included mapping of existing fields to the new IRIS and loading of existing data to IRIS test system. New workflows and some re-configuration of the default system were proposed.

In 2010, Booth Library began establishing an institutional repository, The Keep, an effort that involved multiple departments within the library. Potential content recruitment for the repository included large-scale digitization of archival materials and migration of previously created digital collections. Creation of the repository resulted in increased accessibility, better presentation of content that had existed on outmoded legacy web platforms, and the rescue of damaged content that had been disintegrating on other digital storage formats. In October of 2013, Clemson University launched its TigerPrints institutional repository. This IR is a key component in a suite of services designed to capture the scholarly output of the University and make it openly available to the world while supporting the online and open access publication of unique Clemson scholarship. This presentation will explore the fundamentals of institutional repositories, and the ways that they can be used as tools to educate researchers on copyright, author’s rights, and the benefits of openly sharing their research.

Do We Speak The Same Language? A Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of Information Literacy, Jonathan Cope, Jesús E. Sanabria

Publications and Research

The authors analyze twenty in-depth interviews with faculty members about how they perceive information literacy (IL) to examine two key factors: how disciplinary background influences conceptions of IL among faculty members in academic departments and how the instructors’ perception of information literacy differs from that of professionals in library and information science. The investigators analyzed these interviews by utilizing a phenomenological method. The faculty members were interviewed at a four-year college, the College of Staten Island, and at a community college, the Bronx Community College, both part of the City University of New York.

In October 2013, George Washington University's School of Public Health and Health Services (now the Milken Institute School of Public Health) approached the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library about moving a large collection of Health Policy Department publications and citations from the school's website into the Health Sciences Research Commons (HSRC) institutional repository. After a project planning meeting with the school's representative, library staff began uploading documents and citations from the collection. Working from a spreadsheet and file set provided by the school, library staff processed 604 citations (including 319 full-text files) dating back to 1996. Despite some problem files and …
