This panel describes how the University of Dayton planned and carried out an exhibit on the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection, featuring a garden inside the library. A “Mary garden” is a garden filled with flowers named for Mary.

The panel describes the content of the collection and how the exhibit was originally conceived; the exhibit design and programming; and the challenges faced during the planning process.

The exhibit provided a way for the Libraries to promote an archival collection that not only closely connected with the University’s mission as a Catholic institution, but also provided new opportunities …

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky (UK) has created the Passport to the World Program (PWP) to celebrate campus-wide the cultural heritage of a country or region every academic year. The UK Libraries International Programs has been an active contributor to PWP by collaborating with faculty and different library departments to develop unique digital collections that serve to connect viewers with the featured country or region.

The Portland State University Library has a heavily-used course reserve service, for both print and electronic materials. When we migrated to ExLibris in 2014, we decided to move from Docutek ERes to Alma. We took the opportunity to rethink our course reserve service and changed everything from loan periods to work flows. We also harnessed Primo to make our course reserve materials more discoverable and incorporated course reserves materials in the course shells of our learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L).

Faculty Response To Deselection In Academic Libraries: A Psycholinguistic Analysis, Ann Agee

Deselection is a necessary but politically sensitive part of an academic librarian's responsibilities. To provide an overview of the emotional dynamics involved in weeding an academic collection, this article analyzes editorials, articles, and book chapters chronicling faculty response to weeding from a psycholinguistic viewpoint. Using computer-based text analysis, these accounts are examined for the amount and type of emotional content they contain. These findings provide a template for what librarians can expect when beginning a deselection process and point to best practices for working effectively with faculty to create a robust and healthy collection.

Flattening Funds: Using Alma Fund Structure & Reporting Codes, Kate Seago

The University of Kentucky had been on Voyager since 2001. We had built a complex fund structure using reporting funds to map funds accurately over to the University’s SAP system and provide break downs by subject and format. In addition, the Acquisitions Department Head had been relying on an access report and a code in the invoice note field to provide accurate ARL statistics. When the Libraries migrated to Alma in January 2016, it quickly became apparent that the fund structure would need substantial reworking to be functional in Alma. National statistics are collected and reported by libraries for a variety of reasons. The presenter was recently asked to report statistics about her library's collections for ARL, AAHSL, ABET, CEAL and IPEDS, each of whom ask a variety of questions about disparate data points. Her institution recently migrated from Voyager to Alma, and she found that the data is not comparable between the prior and subsequent years to this migration. This study investigates two questions key to academic library resources and services: Which sources are students most likely to use to begin their academic work? Whom do students tend to consult for research assistance? In-depth interviews conducted with 15 undergraduate and graduate students were thematically analyzed through a three-step process. The findings indicate that students are most likely to consult faculty and peers for assistance and are largely unaware of librarians' roles, while they tend to begin research using library databases and do not necessarily start with Google. In Fall 2014, Steen Library Administration developed a renovation project to repurpose an area for students to use, particularly graduate students. The northwest quadrant of the third floor in the library cleared for the project with materials deselected or shifted. Librarians estimated that about 105,000 volumes (15% of the stacks collection) could be deselected. Deselection is a routine task performed by libraries to create a more relevant and accessible collection for the users they serve. Library faculty use various criteria for each discipline and carefully consider each item.

Students in K-6 support becoming digital learners but many lack the digital skills needed to engage with ICTs such as eBooks. Some educators lack the technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK) to adjust instruction and meet students’ needs. This study examined the extant body of research on the use of eBooks with K-6 literacy instruction to address the perceived lack of effective evidence based practices needed to build self-efficacy. The goal: identify effective TPK regarding when, how, and why to integrate eBooks with K-6 literacy instruction.
